I now shall tell you something about how big and powerful it was: its body, neck, and head were more than fifty feet long, making it truly enormous and massive all over! When it was hungry, no animal in the ancient wood could escape its stalking, and every prey it chose was quickly devoured. A horse was nothing but a single gulp for it. This was true even if a fully armed knight were riding it: the knight was simply killed by being swallowed down together with his horse! This is why the other animals dared not stay anywhere near it and always fled when it went on the prowl.

I shall also explain to you why those animals did not harm any of the knights or even the sergeants on foot who were trying to pass through the forest: the panther was on the prowl!
