Charles Allen graduated from Morehouse College in his hometown of Atlanta and, after earning an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1972, began a 16-year career with First National Bank of Chicago. He moved to Detroit as president and CEO of First Independence National Bank in 1981.

Allen founded Graimark, a real estate, investment and asset-management company, in 1988, with corporate headquarters in Detroit and offices in Philadelphia and Richmond, Va.

Graimark provided services to the U.S. Resolution Trust Corp. and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. during the savings-and-loan bailout. It was the nation's largest asset-management contractor, handling portfolios exceeding $2 billion in 26 states.

Graimark is developing single-family home communities in Richmond, Flint and Detroit and has entered into an alliance with GMAC Mortgage Corp. to build affordable housing in 19 cities.

Graicap is a full-service investment bank with offices in Detroit and Chicago. New South Africa Pizza has offices in Johannesburg and holds the Domino's Pizza master franchise for all of South Africa.

Greatest business achievement: ``Candidly, the transition from corporate life to being an entrepreneur, after leaving First Independence Bank 10 years ago. I've been able to accomplish a lot, sometimes with meager resources, and that's most fulfilling and exciting. I think we've been able to do a lot of good, have an impact on employees and customers.''

Defining moment: ``I grew up in an Atlanta ghetto and could have chosen the road much traveled and more predictable. I credit my mother for giving me a vision, a dream that said I could be something better and not be captive to low expectations. Finally, 18 residents of Jefferson Village brought a suit against the City of Detroit, Graimark, and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (the quasi-public entity with strong developer ties who manages the project) arguing that the project provided “no public purpose and no necessity for the taking” through the eminent domain process.[9] The lawsuit was later settled out of court with residents opting to take payments for their properties.
