- >Twilight Sparkle sat in the grass, reading a book while Rainbow Dash practiced her tricks in the air.
- >Rainbow had been practicing non-stop for two weeks ever chance she could, after the Wonderbolts had sent her a letter, stating they wanted her to join.
- >But she had to put on a solo performance for them.
- >Twilight promised her she would watch, but she had been fixated on this book all day.
- >Rainbow didn’t seem to notice, though, and frequently called out to Twilight, “Did you see that? How did it look?”
- >Without looking up from her book, Twilight would yell back, “It looked great! Keep up the good work!”
- >Twilight then heard something behind her. It sounded like hooves hitting the ground.
- >Twilight turned around and saw Soarin standing behind her.
- >He was out of uniform, but still had his flight goggles on.
- “Hey there, Princess Twilight.” Soarin bowed to her, causing her to blush.
- “Oh, you don’t have to call me that, or bow.” She said, giggling awkwardly. “Just Twilight is fine. Are you here to check up on Rainbow Dash?”
- >Soarin walked over beside her and layed down next to her. “Yeah, I came to see if she was coming along well on her routine.”
- “I should hope so. She’s been working non-stop ever since she got the letter. I’ve watched her several times now, and she’s getting better every time.”
- >Soarin looked up and watched her do loops and spirals in the air, then heaved a sigh
- “Is something wrong, Soarin?” Twilight asked, looking over at him.
- >”Nah. Well, sort of… You know how today is Hearts and Hooves Day?”
- “It is?...Oh.” Twilight had forgotten all about that. She had never cared much for the holiday herself, and had forgotten completely about it.
- “Yeah, it is. Well, a couple weeks ago, I asked Rainbow Dash if she wanted to come to Cloudsdale to a dance with me.”
- “Oh…” Twilight said. She already saw the problem with this.
- “Yeah… I wish I had known she swung the other way before hoof. But, what’re you going to do, right?”
- “Yeah…” Twilight said, awkwardly blushing at the thought of the exchange between the two pegasi.
- >The two ponies sat there in silence for a few moments, before Twilight instinctively opened her book back up to break herself from the situation.
- “Oh, what’s that you’re reading?”
- >Twilight perked up when asked about her book. “Oh, I’m reading this really neat book about the physics behind pegasi flight. It’s really interesting!”
- >Soarin leaned down to look at the front cover of the book. “Oh, it’s Ace’s book! I knew him really well before he passed away. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest fliers Equestria has ever seen!”
- “Have you read this book, then?”
- “Of course! I’ve read it front to back several times before. I can tell you anything you want to know about how Pegasi fly and achieve the best possible aerodynamicy.”
- >Twilight thought for a second. “Do you normally read a lot of stuff?”
- “Oh for sure. I love reading. I try to read at least one book per week, which can get a bit tough with as much practicing as we have to do per day to stay in top condition.”
- “I never knew! That’s so cool. Reading is my absolute favorite thing to do. I never leave home without some sort of book with me!”
- >Twilight noticed that Soarin wasn’t look at her anymore, but more at her side. She looked back and noticed that her wings were sticking straight in the air.
- “I… uh… Didn’t mean to – I mean…” Twilight babbled embarrassed. Her face began to glow a red color
- “Oh, it’s fine. You’ve not even had your wings for a year yet, have you?”
- “N-no.”
- “It takes a while to get used to them.”
- >Suddenly Rainbow Dash landed in front of the two ponies. “Oh, hey Soarin! Were you watching? Was I doing well?!”
- >Soarin blushed a little, “Uh, I’ll admit, I wasn’t quite paying attention…”
- “What? Why not?” Rainbow said annoyed. She looked at the two ponies, both blushing.
- “Oh. “ She crossed her hooves and looked at them. “I’m going to go get some lunch.” Without another word, she flew off.
- >Twilight and Soarin both watched her fly towards Ponyville.
- “Well…” Twilight said, blushing even harder. “If you want, you can come with me t-to the Library. Maybe you’ll find something interesting to read.”
- >Soarin thought for a second. “Uh, sure! That sounds fun. Sure!”
- >Twilight took him back to her home.
- “I’m sure it’s not as nice as whatever library you may have in Cloudsdale, but I’m proud of my collection!”
- >Soarin walked around the bookshelves, looking at all the different books. “This place is awesome! It must be great to live in a library.”
- “Oh, it is! It’s so great, being able to just look for a book. I also get grants from Canterlot to buy books.”
- “Man, that’s awesome.” He flapped his wings, and hovered up the B shelf to the top, and pulled out a book. “You have it!”
- “Have what?”
- “Only my favorite novel ever: Galloping Heights!”
- >Twilight’s eyes went wide and her wings puffed out again. “You like Galloping Heights?!”
- “I love it! This is easily best novel I’ve ever read. The story and all of its allusions and meanings are so deep. I love it all!”
- “I’ve not met any other pony who likes that book – It’s my favorite too! Even Princess Celestia told me she finds the book boring.”
- “What’s your favorite part?” Soarin flew down with the book and landed beside Twilight, laying the book out on the table.
- “Oh, that’s easy. My favorite part is when old Catherine…”
- >The two ponies spent an entire hour talking about the book in question. After that one, they moved to the next, and the next.
- --------------------------
- “Yeah… Sorry I held you for so long.”
- “Oh, it’s no worry! But, I do have to be back in Cloudsdale tonight. Practice in the morning.”
- “Oh, I see. Well, I hope you have a safe flight!” Twilight instinctively leaned in and hugged Soarin. They both blushed, but neither of them broke the hug.
- >Finally Twilight leaned out, but kept her hooves on Soarin’s shoulders as they looked at each other.
- “T-thanks. I’ll fly safely, I promise.”
- “Good.”
- >They stared at each other. Slowly they leaned in and gave each other a small kiss, all of the blood in their bodies rushing upwards.
- “I… Happy Hearts and Hooves Day.” Twilight said, trying her hardest not to stumble on her words.
- “Y-you too.” Soarin said.
- >Soarin waved and slowly walked out the door. He hesitated before he took off, looking back at Twilight once more, the blush never leaving his face.
- >He smiled, and she smiled back.
- >Finally, he took off into the sky towards Cloudsdale.
- >Twilight watched him until he was no longer visible in the sky.
- >She walked into her house and stood in the doorway for a moment, as if she didn’t know why she were there.
- >Then she went over and picked up Galloping Heights, and went up to her room and started reading.
