- Word Order:
- Subject Verb Object
- Adjectives come after the noun they describe
- Adverbs come after the verb they describe - if they describe an entire sentence, they go at the beginning or end.
- The indirect object is expressed with a prepositional phrase ie; "I give John the food" becomes "I give the food to John". In Toki Pona, "mi pana e moku tawa jan John".
- Pronouns:
- mi - I
- sina - You
- ona - He/She/It
- If and only if necessary, make these plural by adding "mute". ie; "We" = "mi mute". "They" = "ona mute".
- Proper nouns function as adjectives and must describe a noun. "Zack" = "jan Zack", literally "Zack person".
- Particles ("Special Words"):
- li - follows all subjects not modified by adjectives, except "mi" (I) and "sina" (you). Also, if you use two verbs, place it between the two verbs. "He eats and talks" = "ona li moku li toki".
- e - comes between a verb and its object.
- la - comes between an adverb which modifies a sentence and the sentence it modifies. "Yesterday I ate" = "pini la mi moku"
- o - comes before imperative verbs AKA commands. "Eat!" = "o moku"
- pi - "of" or "belonging to". "My fish" = "kala pi mi"
- nanpa - comes before ordinal numbers "Second" = "nanpa tu"
