Something I wrote on another forum which I thought could benefit  people on IMVU proper; not knowing what forum to dump it on, it can go

here for now.

STEPS TO AVOIDING BEING HACKED:
<P></P>
1: Have up to date virus software. Ad-aware, Spybot, Avast and  MalwareBytes are all free and very good quality. Scan regularly and you shouldn't cop a keylogger.
<P></P>
2: Don't click links from shady people, and don't download anything  that you don't know what it is. Keyloggers get in through unwise downloads, or sites that exploit browser vulnerabilities.
<P></P>
3: On that note, make sure you have an up to date browser. I use  firefox, but I'm told Chrome and new versions of IE are good. If you're running an old version of IE or something, fix that right away.

4: Change your password to something impossible to bruteforce. Mash your keyboard, for example:

Copy that, and save it somewhere secure. Then, whenever you need to  use your password, paste it in. This has a dual purpose: the password is impossible to guess, and copypaste defeats keyloggers.

If you're really paranoid, make a habit of changing your password every couple of weeks.
<P></P>
If you have followed all these steps, it is virtually impossible for  a hacker to get you. Most 'hackers' are just script kiddies who either  get the password from the unfortunate user, get it with a keylogger, or  (if they're a little more advanced) bruteforce a password using a site dictionary. It is incredibly difficult if not impossible for a hacker to  extract your password from the server- hell, half
the time it's  impossible for employees of the site to extract your password. If a  hacker is threatening you, it's almost certain that they're 90% hot air  and are doing it to make you make a mistake, or to manipulate you.
