Yesterday I found my old Sony Ericsson k550i and I started thinking about the days when it was my main phone. I think I was around 8-9 when I first got it. Since I can remember I have been tinkering with computers, so it didn't take me long to start modding that phone. At that time due to very limited knowledge, all I could do was to use mods created by other people, using tutorials on polish forums. After over 10 years, I am here, knowing english, knowing how to code and having some experience in reverse engineering. I am wondering, how were old phones reverse engineered? Today this is easy, with Android being open source. Back then this seemed like a real challenge. I'm really sad that I wasn't born 10 years earlier. I could get involved in that community. I tried to find some resources about modding these old phones, but couldn't find much. Most websites don't work anymore and those that work are in russian language which I don't know. After googling ELFPack, which I used in my childhood and was very impressed by it, I found your website and I saw you were involved with it. Would you mind sharing some details about it? How was debugging done? I guess using JTAG? Or maybe static code analysis was enough? How did you identify functions in the codebase? How did you know what address the code was loaded at? Where did you get knowledge about these devices? Sorry about asking that much, but this stuff is really interesting to me :D. I probably used your work in the past without being aware, so thank you very much for making my childhood so fun and inspiring. I really appreciate it :).
