- Star Wars Day 2025: Why we say, 'May the 4th be with you' on unofficial holiday
- For Star Wars fans, May 4 is a day to celebrate the cherished cinema saga. The saying, 'May the Force be with you,' comes from the original 1977 movie that launched George Lucas' space opera.
- May the 4th is always a special day for fans of Star Wars and that's why on Sunday you will likely hear someone utter "May the 4th be with you."
- The saying comes from a line of dialogue in the 1977 film, "Star Wars," which gained the expanded title "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" as George Lucas' space opera saga expanded over the decades. In the film, before the rebel fighters begin their assault on the Death Star, General Dodonna encourages them with the command: "Then man your ships! And may the Force be with you!"
- "May the Force be with you" is a saying that, excuse the pun, flows through the Star Wars movies, TV series, books and comics. It's a saying used by Jedi Knights such as Obi-Wan Kenobi referencing the Force, a form of energy connecting the galaxy, which some Force-sensitive individuals can tap into and enhance their abilities. Saying, "May the Force be with you," is akin to wishing someone "Good Luck."
- How did 'May the 4th' come about?
- The origins of the saying "May the 4th be with you," may be surprising.

- While it was used in headlines for July 4 back to 1978, according to starwars.com, the first reported official use of the phrase came in May 1979, when Margaret Thatcher became the U.K.'s prime minister. To celebrate, the U.K. Conservative Party paid for a newspaper advertisement saying, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!” wrote Steve Sansweet on starwars.com in 2013.
- Over the years as the Star Wars universe grew with 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" through the prequel films and subsequent sequel trilogy, which included 2015's "The Force Awakens," the "May the 4th be with you" phenomenon grew into an unofficial "Star Wars Day" holiday with fans holding "Star Wars Day" parties or watching the movies in observance of the day.
- At the recent Star Wars Celebration Japan event, it was announced that an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the initial movie's debut will be held in Los Angeles in 2027.
- How to celebrate Star Wars Day
- The easiest way to celebrate is to stream some of the movies, all 11 of which are available on Disney+ (Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012).
- Also on the streaming service is Season Two of "Andor," a series that is set before the events of 2016 film "Rogue One," which leads up to "Star Wars: A New Hope." The first six episodes of the series are available; six more are scheduled.
- Many restaurants, movie theaters, toy stores, and other businesses hold Star Wars Day events, too. Sports venues often have Star Wars celebrations around May 4. Check social media for #Maythe4th.
- You can also shop the Disney Store's May the 4th Be With You 2025 Collection, which includes T-shirts, pins, hats, and more. There's also special Star Wars products on Lego.com and merchandise from Star Wars Celebration Japan on Amazon.com.
- The mobile game Monopoly Go! has a special Star Wars "experience" with characters and settings from the movies and "The Mandalorian" TV series to create a two-month-long "series of action-packed in-game events, collectibles and surprises," game publisher Scopely said in a press release.
- Players who log onto the game on May 4 will get an exclusive token. The game just hit its two-year anniversary and has racked up $5 billion in revenue, Scopely says.
- If you are also a fan of Fortnite, you can get a head start on the upcoming "Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld," a six-episode animated series. It hits Disney+ on May 4, but you can see the first two episodes May 2 inside the video game.
- Star Wars Day: 4 Fun and Easy Ways to Celebrate May the 4th
- If you’re new to the Star Wars phrase or celebration, it’s a play on the Jedi phrase, “May the force be with you,” and has become a cult favorite for people of all ages. Star Wars has an incredible following, and if you or your kids enjoy the films, this is the day to go all out.
- This year, because we can’t go enjoy Star Wars at a Disney park, let’s enjoy it at home with the whole family. But, here are some quick, fun ways to bring this celebration a lot closer than a galaxy far, far away.
- Dress up in your favorite Star Wars gear!
- First, pull out the Star Wars costumes, Star Wars shirts, big Yoda ears (or make your own). Moms, you too, try your hand at Princess Leia’s infamous buns or Rey’s triple buns, or test out a new hairdo on your littles! Have a furry pet? Try and make them look like Chewbacca or an E-Wok. However, if you don’t have any Star Wars gear, always remember… the Jedis wore robes. Here is the perfect excuse to wear a robe all day.
- Dressing up is a fun way to get into the spirit and prepare yourself for an exciting day ahead.
- Get crafting!
- Do you have some old pool noodles that aren’t getting much use or ones you want to repurpose? For a quick craft, make your own lightsabers. Cut a pool noodle in half or to the length you prefer for your child. Wrap one end with silver duct tape to make the handle. Then, design some buttons and accessories using some black electrical tape or washi tape!
- You can also try smaller versions of this. Use an old paper towel roll or cut a gift wrap roll in half and paint them. Get creative just like a Jedi would. Afterward, play with your new Star Wars toys and have a Jedi training session.
- Another even simpler option…
- This craft only requires two things, a paper plate and some paint. Now, you or your kids can quickly paint a Death Star with some black and grey paint, if you’re part of the Empire, of course. Or, if you’re in the Rebel Alliance, get some orange paint and paint a BB-8 droid! This will definitely be the droid your kids are looking for. *Jedi hand wave*
- Whip up a 5 minute healthy Star Wars snack!
- Here’s a Pinterest fail-proof way to bring Star Wars to life and get a healthy snack in for you and your kids. Make fruit TIE fighters.
- All you need are the following ingredients:
- 1 banana
- 2 apples
- 2 tablespoons nut butter, peanut, almond, or maybe even cookie butter?
- This should yield about 4 servings.
- Slice the banana into rounds.
- Then, slice the whole unpeeled apples into rounds and then into hexagons.
- Put a SMALL dollop of the nut butter in the middle of each apple slice and join them together using the banana slice. The apples are the wings and the banana slice in the middle is the cockpit. I learned to put less peanut butter on ours so it’s a little less messy.
- Stand them up!
- That’s it!
- Have a Star Wars movie marathon!
- Rise of Skywalker is the most recent film in the Star Wars saga, and it’s being released on Disney+ on May the Fourth. So, you can catch up on all the Skywalker trilogy and watch Episodes I-VIII, all currently streaming on Disney+. Finally, curl up, get your fruit TIE fighters to snack on, and enjoy being transported to a galaxy far, far away.
- Now, in the wise words of Yoda, “Do or do not, there is no try!” Let me know your favorite Star Wars character, and what you’ll be doing to celebrate this fun day!

- 5 Ways to Celebrate Star Wars Day at Work
- Happy Star Wars Day—May the fourth be with you! As most life forms know, May 4 is that wondrous day of the year when the universe celebrates all things Star Wars. A pun on the Star Wars franchise’s most-famous catchphrase, it’s not just for diehard fans, but an opportunity for businesses to bring some levity into the workplace.
- After all, celebrating lighthearted “holidays” at work increases employee morale and engagement. Whimsical office celebrations can help employees connect with one another over an enjoyable experience—and a few shared smiles.
- In addition, marking pop-culture occasions like Star Wars Day (not to be confused with Star Wars Life Day, a Wookie holiday celebrated in November) can foster team building and inclusivity, as employees of all backgrounds can participate equally. It may also boost creativity, when workers are encouraged to express their own forms of celebration.
- Chances are, you have some serious practitioners of Star Wars fandom among your ranks, as well as some folks who couldn’t care less. It’s all good, as long as everyone is free to participate as much or little as they choose. Wondering how to celebrate Star Wars Day at work? Grab your lightsaber—and scope out our Star Wars Day office ideas.
- 1. Encourage Star Wars Day Attire
- One quick way to get in the intergalactic spirit is to put the corporate dress code on pause and hold a lunchtime costume party. Everyone will enjoy seeing Jedi and Sith warriors prowling around the office—or admiring some vintage Star Wars tee shirts and Princess Leia hair buns.
- Manage a remote workforce? Consider holding a virtual costume contest. There’s a good chance that Darth Vader or Hans Solo will make an appearance.
- 2. Hold a Star Wars Day Trivia Contest
- Test your office’s collective Star Wars Day knowledge by hosting a trivia contest at some point during the workday. You can make it an individual or team building competition, and perhaps offer themed prizes to the winners (yes, they make Star Wars office supplies). You can find all levels of movie trivia questions online. Give your most-passionate Star Wars aficionados a chance to shine!
- 3. Organize a Star Wars Day Potluck Lunch
- Believe it or not, there is a whole galaxy of Star Wars recipes out there awaiting discovery—and this is a great way for employees to showcase their creative culinary talents. Post a sign-up sheet for those who choose to participate, or keep it simple with Star Wars Day-themed snacks. Wookie cookies, anyone? How about some gingerbread stormtroopers?
- 4. Invite Star Wars Day Workspace Décor
- Today is the day that employees are free to transform their workspace into galaxies far, far away. Invite them to hang posters of their favorite characters, display their collectibles, or print out some inspirational quotes—extra points if they also apply to the workplace. (Our favorite: Yoda’s “Do or don’t do…there is no ‘try.’”) Bonus: remote workers can really participate here, too.
- 5. Celebrate Star Wars Day Virtually
- Outer space, cyberspace…what’s the difference? Another fun Star Wars Day office idea is to encourage employees to use Star Wars-themed gifs in their emails today or download a Star Wars video background for virtual meetings. And speaking of which, perhaps you’ll want to open every meeting by playing the Star Wars movie theme, inspiring your people to reach for the stars!
