» | BACKGROUND: born and raised in jeju, mari didn't have any siblings, and her family was always in close contact to its immediate connections. as a result, she ended up spending a loT of quality time with her aunt and uncle, as well as her cousin. despite the four year age difference and varying personalities, the two of them managed to become extremely close, and to this day are still the very best of friends. as a child, her family had always been fairly involved in music -- whether it was casual karaoke nights, or serious competitions she and her cousin had been entered into. because of this, her and her cousin developed a deeply rooted love for singing, which lead her to try out for an entertainment company. when she turned 17, she auditioned for sm entertainment -- and made it in as a trainee. a while later, she was delighted to learn that her cousin, seungkwan had made it into a company himself.

» | PERSONALITY: easily described as the complete opposite of her cousin (who she happens to be the closest to), the only way you could even think of describing mari is serious. she's the type of person who can never take a joke, and usually can't even pick up on a joke once its told (which leads to much teasing from her friends.) her cute baby face gives off the vibe that she's very squishy and outgoing, and just fluffy in general, but couldn't be more wrong. she's the type of person who becomes more and more intimidating the more you get to know her personality, and how her adorable face is just a front for what her members like to call "the devil beneath." mari is very vERY stern, and is a strong believer in tough love -- if anyone does something wrong, she's most likely to be blunt with them rather than sugar coat the statement. if you want someone who's nice and caring with the advice they give, then mari's definitely not the girl to go to. she has major ocd and is probably one of the biggest control freaks you will ever meet, but what makes her fit to be leader of ion-h is how she always knows when to stop, and the best way to steer the group. because of how dense she is when it comes to anything relating to humor, she's probably the most teased member, and the group actually considers it a pastime to poke fun at her. she's extremely variety impaired to the point where its hilarious to watch her (which is a bit of an idiom, considering her variety disadvantage,,, actually gives her unintentional variety skills) and sometimes it can seem like she has a stick up her ass, but even she knows when to relax and have even a bit of fun. mari is the most unlikely member to act out of line and like a total dork, which is exactly why she does it. she's the person who lets loose without breaking her cool and blank facade, and dances around to boy group songs and gets really passionate about it *cough* justlikeseodaeyoungfeelsaboutredvelvet. also, because of her endearingly cute face, she has a lot of aegyo that she shows at the most random and unexpected times.

» | HOW YOU MEET: before they officially meet, mari's seen baekhyun around, and can't really believe that he's debuted in a group. sure, she's heard of exo and how good they are, but she's never actually paid any real attention to them, and has barely started matching names to faces. what she's noticed from just observing them is that baekhyun is a giant jokester who seems like he can't take anything seriously -- which, to her, includes being an idol. despite what people tell her about how amazingly dedicated he is, she doesn't believe him, and sees him as some sort of fool. but, one day, she stays back after practice, and sees him alone in one of the rehearsal rooms. she peeks in, and he's practicing his singing, and getting frustrated when he can't get it right. when he gets so mad that he throws his papers against the wall, she realizes how stupid she was for thinking he didn't care about his idol life. while she tries to leave quietly and let him wallow, she accidentally trips over herself and falls down, making a really loud noise that attracts his attention. he turns around and sees her, and they don't say anything as she tries to crawl away once again, completely and thoroughly embarrassed.

» | HOW YOU ACT AROUND EACH OTHER:
   - b e g  | at first, mari isn't sure how to act around him,,, at all. she feels like the epitome of shit because of how badly she thought of him, and as a result is extremely awkward around him. he, on the other hand, knows what she thought about him, but doesn't really care when he sees that she doesn't have that mindset anymore. he pretends that nothing ever happened, and tries to joke around with her and bring her out of her comfort zone,,,, which doesn't really work, because she literally takes forever to catch onto jokes. she just ends up feeling more awkward, but that doesn't faze him, and he continues his pursuits.
   - m i d  | after a while, once they've both been able to familiarize themselves with each other and she's gotten over the guilt she felt for underestimating him, mari manages to relax around him,,, possibly to the point where she can finaLLY laugh at his horrible jokes. of course, she doesn't, because why would she laugh at him? she thinks he's funny -- possibly the funniest person she's ever met -- but there is no way in hell she's gonna let him know that. instead, she ends up doing this thing where she slightly brushes him off, but still manages to hang around him and spend time with him (all the while pretending he annoys her, of course.) he, on the other hand, is determined to get her to like him, and continues to act like, well, the cutie he is. he does his best to entertain her, and isn't affected when she doesn't have a response because of how much perseverance he has in himself.
   - e n d  | towards the end, the both of them are so close that they feel like they've known each other foreEEVERERRER. they have that cliched kind of relationship of an overly enthusiastic and very very hyper puppy, plus the grumpy, 10000000% done with everything person who nobody understands yet still manage to compliment each other perfectly. at this point, mari isn't afraid to admit that she enjoys his company, but she does it verY VERRRRRYy (AJU) grudgingly. he's just extremely happy that he's finally managed to get her to open up to him, and that they're close friends. he's very open to his feelings, and knows that he likes her, but isn't going to say anything because he wants her to realize before they (frickle frackle) move up to the next level (criNGE that sounds weird.) somewhere in her mind, mari knows that she likes him, but she's willing to do anything to avoid thinking that, and would probably deny it ten billion times if someone asked her.
