- Obelisk of Reincarnation - ZoeyEX
- “Where the hell am I? The last I can remember, I was driving, and now I’m in what almost seems like a cocoon. Can’t move a muscle either. Did I die?”
- Before I could begin to have an existential crisis, I heard a young voice.
- “It seems like the girl in Obelisk 20 has woken up, but she isn’t fully developed yet. Should we let her out?”, said the voice of a girl who must be roughly my age, if not younger.
- “I’d presume so,” said what sounded to be an elderly man. “The Oracle said that young’uns that wake up early typically are more powerful, and we could certainly use the help in... these circumstances.”
- “Right. I’ll release her now. Get her some clothes, would ya?”
- As soon as the girl said this, I felt excruciating pain all over my body, and then passed out.
- When I reawoke, I found myself hunched over on what felt to be a floor made of something similar to tree bark, naked and covered in some sort of sap.
- “Where.. Am I?”, I murmured, barely able to speak.
- “Welcome to the world of the living! Here, let me clean off your face and get you something to wear,” said the young girl. She took some sort of washcloth to my face, and wiped the sap off of it. I opened my eyes, and saw the young girl looking down at me. She had to be at least 17. “Heh, sorry about not introducing myself. I’m Alice, I’m like, a year or two into this reincarnation. First time here, eh?”
- ~~~~~
- Over the next few hours, Alice explained the general mechanics of reincarnation in this world. Apparently, it was fairly improvised, and wasn’t true reincarnation, hence why it snagged my soul from the world I was from and brought it here. I decided to ask her why such a strange method of causing reincarnation was set up, and she gave an alarming response.
- “Long ago, the Mad God and his advisors stole the magic that allowed heroes to reincarnate and gave it to their lackeys. Only recently did our archwizards, such as Charles, the older man who helps me oversee this floor of the Life Tree, figure out how to steal reincarnation back from Oryx.” I vaguely remembered a part of my past in the previous world, where there was a game called Realm of the Mad God that I played before college took over my life. After jogging my memory for a bit, I connected two and two together, and asked her a question that would help confirm or deny my suspicions:
- “Say, do you know of the Marble Colossus?” I asked.
- “Ah yes, MBC! Some of the archwizards and paladins of this very institution were diverted by the nexus council to help work on it. Not sure how you know of it, though… if this is your first cycle, you should never have heard of it. Eh, it probably doesn’t matter. Maybe your just partially amnesiac?”
- Upon hearing these words, I quickly came to realize that I had to try to stop the rise of the Void Entity. The only issue now was convincing the nexus council to not let the cultists near the MBC. Considering I was a nobody, I doubted that I’d be able to convince them. So I decided to do the only thing I could think of, and explore into the Realm.
- “Could you lead me to the Realm then?” I asked. She nodded, and we set off for the lowlands.
- As soon as we arrived at the beach of the Realm, I could tell that something was very wrong. Dark clouds loomed overhead, getting denser the farther you went from the ocean. As I looked towards the seemingly alien clouds, Alice began walking towards the Lowland Forests. Before I could follow her, however, a large, black scorpion, easily the size of a house, began moving in my direction. Hundreds of fist-sized yellow scorpions followed it around. As much as I tried, my body was not strong enough to fight off even such a simple enemy. The larger scorpion stabbed me though the chest with the tip of its stinger. Alice quickly ran towards me, horrified.
- “You fool! How are you dying to that?!” she screamed, as she sprinted towards the scorpion. She took out what appeared to be a Seal of some sort, and slammed it into the ground. I felt the wound on my chest fully heal, and watched in awe as Alice destroyed the group of scorpions in a single swipe of her sword. “You know how to use your weapons, don’t ya?” she asked.
- “Not really, no?” was the only response I had. She glared at me, grabbed my hand, and warped us to the Nexus. As we rematerialized in the Nexus, all I could think about was how much harder being a hero is when you are actually doing it than when playing a video game, and yet, Alice made it look effortless! Alice gave me a proper trainer weapon, and we headed off to the tutorials. “Well, this is going to be difficult,” I thought to myself. “If I couldn’t even fight of a scorpion, how will I save this world from the Void Entity?”
