- Zhi had a crappy life. Her grandparents came to america as they got kicked out of China for being "too traditionalist", her mother assimilated maybe too far in, leading to her having a teenage affair with a white boy, causing her grandparents to force her to give Zhi up. Being the traditionalists they were, they preferred to keep this "in the community". Unbeknownst to them, Zhi's father was a Wizard's apprentice, causing Zhi to have noticeable magic talent of her own. as thus, when a supposedly kindly martial arts master offered to take the baby off them, they were overjoyed to be rid of the little blonde haired abomination.
- What they didn't know was that said Master was a disciple of the Ascending Shadow, a secret circle of magic martial artist claiming allegiance to the Last Shadow of Ancient China and vowing to return him to power. Seeing Zhi's magic talent as another weapon to be added to their armory (and not much more) she was thus exposed to a rigorous training program to mold her into such.
- Despite her innate magic talent, and through hard training prodigious martial arts skill, Zhi was always aware of her outsider status. Her Master enforced this by forbidding her to dye her blonde hair or put contact lenses in her blue eyes. And when he felt she lacked the fire to be a "true" martial artist, he told her of the 'other girl'.
- A girl, not even half of the right blood who was heir to one of the oldest and most powerful martial arts tradition. The dark skinned apprentice of another pretender to the true arts. And how she was accepted. How she was considered his heir. How even gods treated her as if she *deserved* the privilege she was gifted through sheer luck.
- But maybe, he tempted her, if Zhi could defeat her. If she could *end* one of the lines that defied their great master, she could be granted its secrets as reward, a in their great master's hall. At the least, no one would dare to insult her again. Her name could echo on for generations.
- The Golden Phoenix
- She only had to go and slay the Ebon Phoenix first.
