- The specific issue of communicating with Paige aside, I think we would benefit from hashing out some stuff before continuing IC
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:19 PM (20 hours ago)
- And you might also find it helpful for me to lay out what Hazel's IC goals are, how those mesh with her player's OOC ones:
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:19 PM (20 hours ago)
- IC, Hazel wants to take her time in Wonderland and do everything right
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:24 PM (20 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- She recognizes she's in a bad place in the waking world, and believes that fully realizing her mystic/metaphysical potential will better allow her to save her family, take down VV, and make everyone's lives better
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:25 PM (20 hours ago)
- She would rather spend weeks in a coma she emerges from as a true mage, than have woken up on Friday as a (mostly) ordinary mortal strapped to a bed
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:27 PM (20 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- She is willing to cause her parents short-term (or even weeks-long) pain if it means she can better protect their family better, both against this immediate crisis and future crises
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:28 PM (20 hours ago)
- * family, both against
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:29 PM (20 hours ago)
- She is, as she's stated, a utilitarian who believes in achieving the overall greatest good
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:30 PM (20 hours ago)
- At this point, she is also inclined to shut down Paige with a "sorry, can't answer" so as not to potentially compromise her metaphysical growth
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:30 PM (20 hours ago)
- Maybe Eduard is full of BS, maybe she could still realize her full potential with more work/sacrifice
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:31 PM (20 hours ago)
- But she's not inclined to take chances, and has (also because of her autism) fairly black and white thinking besides
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:31 PM (20 hours ago)
- It's all in or all out
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:32 PM (20 hours ago)
- All of this is before her inherent drive to _know everything_ and pursue Ascension purely for its own sake
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:34 PM (20 hours ago)
- As far as she's concerned, her current wanderings through Wonderland are more important than anything else she has ever done
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:34 PM (20 hours ago)
- School, careers, none of that comes close
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:35 PM (20 hours ago)
- _Magic is real_ and she wants to fully master its secrets
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:35 PM (20 hours ago)
- It's the crux of who she is
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:37 PM (20 hours ago)
- Which only reinforces her belief that staying in Wonderland is the best thing she can do right now, for herself and her family
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:38 PM (20 hours ago)
- As a player, my goals have a fair amount of overlap with Hazel's
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:38 PM (20 hours ago)
- I do want her to get as much out of Wonderland as she can
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:39 PM (20 hours ago)
- Not just in Spheres, but broader knowledge
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:39 PM (20 hours ago)
- And she has learned a lot
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:41 PM (20 hours ago)
- I had her play all the menu options on the Dynatron, as the most direct examples of that "taking my time" approach
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:42 PM (20 hours ago)
- I'm also willing to shut down Paige/choose the metaphysical over the temporal towards that end
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:43 PM (20 hours ago)
- I do want Hazel to fully realize her potential as a mage
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:43 PM (20 hours ago)
- Though as a player, my motivations are obviously different than hers
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:44 PM (20 hours ago)
- Being a mage gives her a thousand and one ways to further influence the setting
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:45 PM (20 hours ago)
- Both through her direct powers (Spheres) and broader supernatural/metaphysical knowledge and awareness
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:45 PM (20 hours ago)
- All of which tie heavily into my RL plans for her--for example, did you know that Mackenzie committed the Sweeney murders?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:46 PM (20 hours ago)
- Yeah, I didn't know that either
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:46 PM (20 hours ago)
- But BOY, isn't it neat how Life and Matter can falsify material evidence
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:47 PM (20 hours ago)
- Plant memories of things in people's heads that never happened
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:48 PM (20 hours ago)
- (Well, Mind there)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:48 PM (20 hours ago)
- Cause people to engage in strange and suspicious behaviors
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:49 PM (20 hours ago)
- Alienate them from their loved ones and would-be defenders
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:49 PM (20 hours ago)
- Cause unfortunate events to happen that land them in deeper trouble
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:49 PM (20 hours ago)
- And so on
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:50 PM (20 hours ago)
- Obviously that plan presents challenges (framing Mackenzie is harder all these weeks later than it would've been on Friday), but that's only part of the fun
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:52 PM (20 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- And I will be grinning like a demon on the day that a jury of Mackenzie's peers can find no reasonable doubt not to send her to prison for the Sweeney murders, if I manage to pull it off
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:53 PM (20 hours ago)
- (After all... SOMEONE needs to take the fall for them, and VV sure can't)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:53 PM (20 hours ago)
- (Well, the public fall)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:55 PM (20 hours ago)
- That's the sort of plot and ability to exercise greater agency that opens up to Hazel as a mage
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 6:57 PM (20 hours ago)
- And why I want her to return to the real world as one
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:06 PM (20 hours ago)
- Said ability to exercise agency is all the more important to me given that her current real-world circumstances have stripped her of so much
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:08 PM (19 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- Waking up strapped to a bed and and the preceding conversation with Mackenzie were actively non-fun "not enjoying these at all" scenes for me, because my PC was seemingly impotent to do anything
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:09 PM (19 hours ago)
- (Or at least, anything that didn't just make things worse, like escaping through a window might have been)
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:10 PM (19 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- This is a horror game and I am totally down for playing Jonathan Harker in Dracula's castle, walking on eggshells around a monster that's using me and brides that want to eat me
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:10 PM (19 hours ago)
- But the moment Drac ties me to a bed, locks the door and walks off, I'll stop having fun
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:13 PM (19 hours ago)
- (I also recognize GMs should play the world/NPCs logically in response to a PC's actions, and can be patient there--to a point)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:13 PM (19 hours ago)
- So positive and negative, those are the reasons I want Hazel to complete Wonderland
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:15 PM (19 hours ago)
- But I am also eager to get back to the real world, for the reasons so mentioned
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:16 PM (19 hours ago)
- There's tons of awesome stuff happening there I have so many, many plans and ideas for
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:16 PM (19 hours ago)
- Not just Mackenzie frame-ups
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:17 PM (19 hours ago)
- Or "plot-forwarding" events
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:18 PM (19 hours ago)
- But also interactions with beloved N/PCs
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:18 PM (19 hours ago)
- I'd love to meet Brook again, share the details of the thing in the pass (with some caveats...) and look over his necklace
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:19 PM (19 hours ago)
- I'd love to watch the Spook-tape of Kurt and get drawn into plots with WHO
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:19 PM (19 hours ago)
- (Whose agents are some of the people I suspect of sending Hazel those "do not use color" notes)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:20 PM (19 hours ago)
- (And boy, does she have ways to track the senders down as a mage)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:20 PM (19 hours ago)
- I'd love to meet the members of her family who haven't gotten any direct screentime
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:20 PM (19 hours ago)
- Gramps, Winnie, Lottie, cousins
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:20 PM (19 hours ago)
- I've got tons of stuff I'd love to do with her parents, most of all
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:21 PM (19 hours ago)
- Hazel wants to have a long and frank talk with them about their unresolved feelings for one another
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:22 PM (19 hours ago)
- (There's no time like being hospitalized to win arguments with your family)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:22 PM (19 hours ago)
- She wants to ask them, and fairly directly, why they got divorced
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:23 PM (19 hours ago)
- "Mom, Dad. I'm old enough to know. I almost died. I don't want to go to my grave not knowing why the two people I love most can't stand to be together."
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:23 PM (19 hours ago)
- She wants to change her last name to Calloway-Bauman, as I mentioned to you earlier
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:24 PM (19 hours ago)
- She wants to talk to her mom about her first dad
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:24 PM (19 hours ago)
- She still wants to pursue the big Nostrum case (thanks, Analepsis)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:24 PM (19 hours ago)
- And so much else
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:24 PM (19 hours ago)
- A lot of these ideas have been racketing around in my brain for two OOC years
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:25 PM (19 hours ago)
- I've got a word doc filled up with dialogue ready for Hazel to spring
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:26 PM (19 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- Wonderland has been awesome, truly it has. Tons of foreshadowing, occult symbolism, backstory fleshing-out, it's been everything a mage's journey into the mind should be
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:27 PM (19 hours ago)
- You've done an excellent job making it simultaneously deeply inundated within the occult/supernatural and deeply personal
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:29 PM (19 hours ago)
- We've spent 176 pages of logs there, and I think its wonders have been superlatively conveyed
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:29 PM (19 hours ago)
- As a player, but also as a reader, I am ready to move on to other areas of the setting
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:31 PM (19 hours ago)
- I don't ask that it be right this minute, or tonight
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:32 PM (19 hours ago)
- But I would like it to be soon--and I have concerns that at the current OOC rate of play, it may not be soon
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:32 PM (19 hours ago)
- Would you say we're 50% done with Wonderland? 75%? 90%?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:33 PM (19 hours ago)
- And bearing in mind how we've spent roughly four OOC months, excluding hiatuses, to get to the current point
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:34 PM (19 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- I recognize my preferences don't make things convenient for you in that regard, since if I just wanted Hazel to wake up (rather than wake up as a full mage), that would be easier for you to arrange
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:37 PM (19 hours ago)
- And you don't want to trivialize the gravity of Wonderland's wonders down to just rolls and summaries
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:39 PM (19 hours ago)
- I have some thoughts on potential solutions there--I've also been in the spot of "GM who wants to do scenes proper justice/player who wants to get through those
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:41 PM (19 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- But since you are the GM here, I'd ask your thoughts first--how can we, essentially, have Hazel return to the real world as a real mage at a faster OOC rate of play?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:41 PM (19 hours ago)
- (All done, too. Your ball)
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:58 PM (19 hours ago)
- Thanks for all the above.
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 7:59 PM (19 hours ago)
- to me
- WF is among other things arguably first and foremost a game of mysteries and secrets, and the story of what people pay to obtain them, both intended and unintended.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:00 PM (19 hours ago)
- So ultimately, answering some of those questions above are antithetical to the whole game.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:00 PM (19 hours ago)
- And just to once again clarify--I'm totally okay with Hazel paying for becoming a full mage with weeks away (or more) from the real world
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:01 PM (19 hours ago)
- I'd just prefer that price not be paid so heavily on the OOC side too
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:02 PM (19 hours ago)
- How heavy that price will be upon all of the above IC/OOC goals/desires/drives is not yet known to Hazel (or her player).
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:03 PM (19 hours ago)
- to me
- And as stated at the outset of the game, WF does not include players picking supernatural-ity like most other WoD games. There's no guarantee of a PC being a mage, vamp, psionic FBI agent, werewolf, etc.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:04 PM (19 hours ago)
- So I cannot even promise Hazel gets to be a "full mage" at any point in the game.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:04 PM (19 hours ago)
- Not saying she can't/won't either
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:04 PM (19 hours ago)
- Right, maybe she'll botch something important coming up and lose her powers
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:04 PM (19 hours ago)
- (Though I hope she won't)
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:04 PM (19 hours ago)
- Understood.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:05 PM (19 hours ago)
- Totally groovy with all of those IC (and OOC) things you've mentioned
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:05 PM (19 hours ago)
- I just want to expedite their RL pace
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:05 PM (19 hours ago)
- Just as David wants/hopes Brook becomes a werewolf of a certain kind.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:06 PM (19 hours ago)
- Wendigo would be my first pick for him, but I can see Fianna too
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:08 PM (18 hours ago)
- to me
- So I'd recommend you play Hazel as you wish and think fitting for her persona. She believes Paige is contacting her, she recognizes some danger of engaging with her in regards to Hazel's metaphysical ascension/metamorphosis, though that danger is vague and fraught with uncertainties. She also recognizes that Paige seems to be a sole timely link to her family/body/life in WF, and that disregarding that message poses some danger as to what might happen to her body/family/life in WF, though that danger is also vague and fraught with uncertainties.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:10 PM (18 hours ago)
- Yep. I'll make that choice as feels appropriate for Hazel rather than me. But hopefully it's also understandable I'd like to talk about these related issues OOC
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:10 PM (18 hours ago)
- Totally understandable.
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:11 PM (18 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- I am totally groovy if Hazel turns to be completely wrong in her belief that taking extra time to develop her mage powers will be in her family's overall best interests
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:11 PM (18 hours ago)
- So to perhaps rephrase my last and most germane query:
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:12 PM (18 hours ago)
- How can we expedite the OOC time pace of Hazel's IC attempted actions, irrespective of how those actions ultimately turn out?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:13 PM (18 hours ago)
- Bearing in mind that I want to attempt to have Hazel "finish" Wonderland, how can we do that at a faster RL pace than we have been?
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:14 PM (18 hours ago)
- "Finishing Wonderland" may in and of itself be a misnomer.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:15 PM (18 hours ago)
- "Complete as much as I can before circumstance, if any, awakens Hazel prematurely"
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:15 PM (18 hours ago)
- Perhaps akin to, though not exactly the same as, a player asking "I'd like hurry up and complete Golconda so I can get back to social politics with the Prince".
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:16 PM (18 hours ago)
- * prince
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:16 PM (18 hours ago)
- So, to perhaps again clarify my OOC goals
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:16 PM (18 hours ago)
- I don't expect Hazel to attain Ascension or become an archmage here
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:16 PM (18 hours ago)
- Or, for that matter, want her to
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:17 PM (18 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- I would simply like her to develop her powers to the point that she can access them again in the real world, so that I can frame Mackenzie for the Sweeney murders (and other fun details)
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:17 PM (18 hours ago)
- Yep, and I'm 100% not promising that, for all of the key reasons above.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:18 PM (18 hours ago)
- So since I'm not/can't promise that, I can't also talk about how to make that non-promised objective happen sooner.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:18 PM (18 hours ago)
- And that's okay. I'm simply asking, how can we expedite the OOC at rate at which I ATTEMPT to achieve that goal?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:18 PM (18 hours ago)
- Not IC sooner, OOC sooner
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:19 PM (18 hours ago)
- Sorry, that's still an inappropriate question or seems to miss the mark of the game's spirit.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:19 PM (18 hours ago)
- For example, if David said, "I'm simply asking, how can we expedite the OOC rate at which he ATTEMPTS to achieve his goal of becoming a werewolf"
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:20 PM (18 hours ago)
- If someone says, "Hey, I'd really like have another scene with Cliff"
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:20 PM (18 hours ago)
- I would tell David "magic 8 ball says reply hazy, ask again"
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:20 PM (18 hours ago)
- Actually, David is a really good example
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:20 PM (18 hours ago)
- That's very fine OOC to ask and for me as the GM to answer OOC
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:21 PM (18 hours ago)
- Let me try to frame a similar question again from his perspective:
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:21 PM (18 hours ago)
- Go for it.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:21 PM (18 hours ago)
- "How can I become a werewolf faster?" is wrong
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:21 PM (18 hours ago)
- Very much so
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:21 PM (18 hours ago)
- But let's suppose that David believes completing the tribal elders' missions will turn him into a werewolf
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:22 PM (18 hours ago)
- He might be totally mistaken this belief, or he might be on the money
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:22 PM (18 hours ago)
- GM can't and won't tell him
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:22 PM (18 hours ago)
- Either way, I'm not going to clarify that for him.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:22 PM (18 hours ago)
- Suppose that it takes eight RL months to play out the first of those missions
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:22 PM (18 hours ago)
- And David would like to get through them faster
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:23 PM (18 hours ago)
- So he asks the GM, "How can we play out these elder missions at a faster OOC rate?"
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:23 PM (18 hours ago)
- Yep, but that isn't what you've done.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:23 PM (18 hours ago)
- You've specifically tied "finishing Wonderland" and being a "full mage"
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:23 PM (18 hours ago)
- Okay, then I've miscommunicated my intentions
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:24 PM (18 hours ago)
- Which is like David saying "finish missions for elders" and "do first change" as fast as possible OOC/IC
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:24 PM (18 hours ago)
- Do you see the problem with your question?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:24 PM (18 hours ago)
- Totally. It makes IC assumptions and presupposes answers that aren't available to the player
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:25 PM (18 hours ago)
- I'm fine if the problem was an error, but I do want to make sure that error is clear now.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:25 PM (18 hours ago)
- Yep
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:25 PM (18 hours ago)
- Maybe the present sojourn won't result in Hazel becoming a full mage
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:25 PM (18 hours ago)
- And honestly, like if we were playing a standard "Mage game" or something, then it could be a totally fine question.

- Not necessarily. I wouldn't have told David "how can we have Amelie get Embraced faster?" if he asked that
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:26 PM (18 hours ago)
- But regardless
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:26 PM (18 hours ago)
- Like I said, "could be"
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:26 PM (18 hours ago)
- I would like to know, how can _progress_ through the current Wonderland sojourn (however it ends, and whatever IC consequences it has) at a faster OOC rate?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:27 PM (18 hours ago)
- Ie, "How can we play through these tribal elder missions faster?"
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:28 PM (18 hours ago)
- to me
- So I want to make a key point here. "Progress" is pretty laden with IC/OOC notions. See earlier comment about "IC assumptions and presupposes answers that aren't available to the player".
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:29 PM (18 hours ago)
- Versus something more clear and less laden like "I'd like to end Wonderland scenes OOC asap and get back to playing in WF"
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:29 PM (18 hours ago)
- I use "progress" because ending Wonderland scenes ASAP isn't what I want to do, at all
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:30 PM (18 hours ago)
- But to make another effort at rephrasing (though I think you can guess the general intent behind my words):
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:32 PM (18 hours ago)
- The intent (which might be incorrectly guessed) still seems like David asking how to "finish missions for elders" and "do first change" as fast as possible OOC.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:33 PM (18 hours ago)
- I would like to know, how can Hazel attempt to make further progress along her metaphysical journey in Wonderland (however it goes or ends, and whatever IC cons
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:35 PM (18 hours ago)
- So try to use another word besides "progress" and I think you might better see the problem there.
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:35 PM (18 hours ago)
- to me
- As it sounds like "I'd like to level up faster, how can we do that faster OOC?" or alternatively, "I'd like to learn more secrets about WF faster, how do we do that faster OOC?"
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:40 PM (18 hours ago)
- to me
- WF is about secrets and mysteries. If we play in "Wonderland" it remains that way. Any metaphysical progress is one involving learning secrets and unraveling mysteries. I'm not going to fast-forward through any of that with simply rolls. As the game revolves around the player and PC learning those secrets nominally at the same time. Same exact principle with learning secrets and mysteries (and their prices) with any play/scenes back in non-Wonderland. Players choose (in part) which mysteries they most want to explore.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:41 PM (18 hours ago)
- For example, David prioritizing finding out what happened to Danny over the ticket stub or Joe's letter, etc.
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:45 PM (18 hours ago)

- Sam, I feel like the semantics of my language are being addressed rather than my concerns. Perhaps that language was poorly chosen and contrary to the theme/tone you desire for the game. I am a Lawful player and want to abide by what your vision is for the game, 100%. If you want to track Hazel's damage and Health to foster even greater mystery and uncertainty, I am on board. The game is about uncovering secrets and forbidden knowledge IC, and you want that atmosphere to extend OOC as well (just as I largely do in my own game). I am in your corner there, and if my questions haven't given the appearance of being so, then I want to get back in your corner
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:46 PM (18 hours ago)
- My original OOC concerns that I would still like to resolve are thus:
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:48 PM (18 hours ago)
- The game is about uncovering secrets and forbidden knowledge IC and OOC (and the consequences of choosing one mystery over another, both IC and OOC).
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:49 PM (18 hours ago)
- For example, you mentioned that Hazel wants to know why her parents divorced. If I'm doing WF right, the players want to know that too.

- I should point out too that I've certainly been trying to listen (I mean, we've been conversing for 2+ hours on this subject). I definitely feel like neither of us is fully understanding the other. But I do think both of us are trying to do so.

- It has taken a long OOC time to accomplish what I will simply term "my current goals." I will trust you both to intuit what those are goals are, based upon my above expressed interests, and to provide an answer that you believe will satisfy me without compromising the atmosphere so vital to making WF what it is.
- What can we do to enable me to accomplish my goals at a faster OOC pace?
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:55 PM (18 hours ago)
- Okay, so I really think I've answered that several times already. But I will try to do so again, or better, or via another way.
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 8:56 PM (18 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- Or, in fact, to use a previous example: how could we have condensed the past four months of Wonderland down to fewer months, and applied that OOC lesson to Wonderland going forward?
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:05 PM (18 hours ago)
- to me
- WF is about players and PCs choosing which mysteries they pursue–and very relatedly the opportunity costs of choosing one over the other. Choosing to pursue "Wonderland" mysteries means not being able to pursue "non-Wonderland" mysteries (to be really crude in their distinction, which is potentially false in many circumstances). I'm not going to rush either. So if you as the player has had fun with Wonderland, but are now are hankering for some more non-Wonderland mystery exploration, then we can OOC and IC make that happen. I'm not offended if a player chooses one mystery over another to pursue. For example, I don't have any bias toward David choosing to follow up on the creature in the pass versus the fortune cookie. I really enjoy seeing the players make that choice and helping them along that way–and if there is no tension IC/OOC, then I'm not doing WF right in my opinion. So if David was doing a lengthy exploration about Rockwell and the creature (or maybe tribal elder missions) and David then wanted to rush through it OOC so he could get to the cookie mystery, I would tell him to have Brook drop or pause the Rockwell investigation and go to the cookie one. And if he wanted to do that, I would help him as the GM.

- *Choosing to pursue "Wonderland" mysteries means not being able to pursue "non-Wonderland" mysteries AT THE SAME RELATIVE TIME (to be really crude in their distinction, which is potentially false in many circumstances).

- Minor but salient clarification.
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:08 PM (17 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- That is all fair. There are OOC as well as IC opportunity costs to goals a PC pursues. If Brook pursues Rockwell's Fall for the next few months, he might not have time to look into things like what happened to Moses. It's ultimately impossible to explore every corner of the game world at once
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:08 PM (17 hours ago)
- Yep
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:08 PM (17 hours ago)
- A different, but related point I would raise is this:
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:08 PM (17 hours ago)
- Consider that Brook has spent several OOC days talking to Whitney
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:09 PM (17 hours ago)
- If the two of you were playing around a tabletop, the conversation would have likely been resolved in less than an hour of RL time
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:10 PM (17 hours ago)
- Tabletop is an inherently faster medium than Hangouts
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:10 PM (17 hours ago)
- And I think that is a significant advantage it enjoys, however much I might prefer the written over the spoken word as a medium
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:13 PM (17 hours ago)
- That faster rate of play is something I am endeavoring to bring into B&B (through a variety of ways), as I believe brisk OOC pacing is good for the game
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:15 PM (17 hours ago)
- If I can turn a scene that took two OOC weeks to play out into one OOC week, I will consider that a win
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:16 PM (17 hours ago)
- Getting through more IC scenes in the same amount of OOC time is a good thing for any game
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:17 PM (17 hours ago)
- Okay, in the interests of trying to speed up this conversation OOC, so we can get back to things both OOG and IG/IC, I'd propose a few options, including:
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:17 PM (17 hours ago)
- I was actually almost finished
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:18 PM (17 hours ago)
- This is what I would like us to work out:
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:18 PM (17 hours ago)
- How can we play through Wonderland scenes (and scenes in general) at a faster OOC rate?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:18 PM (17 hours ago)
- As mentioned, I have a lot of ideas--but since you're the GM, you may want to go first
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:19 PM (17 hours ago)
- to me
- 1. Choose which type of mystery you as the player (not PC) would most like to play now or in the next are scenes (Wonderland/non-Wonderland). Either is fine. Let me know. Then let's play them. If and once that choice changes, let me know. That's fine too. Then let's play them.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:21 PM (17 hours ago)
- I presume there's also a 2.+ if there's a 1.?

- 2. Choose which type of mystery your PC would most like to play now or in the next scenes (Wonderland/non-Wonderland). Either is fine. Let me know. Then let's play them. If and once that choice changes, let me know. That's fine too. Then let's play them.

- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:27 PM (17 hours ago)
- More specifically, I'm asking about which mystery you'd like your PC to investigate now/immediately next

- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:29 PM (17 hours ago)
- I certainly try to be.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:32 PM (17 hours ago)
- Anyway though, can you expound on those options? Is there a difference here between choosing scenes based on Calder's vs. Hazel's preferences?
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:34 PM (17 hours ago)
- Sure. For the next immediate scene(s), which type of mysteries do you as the player prefer to have Hazel investigate, "Wonderland" or "nonWonderland" ones?
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:34 PM (17 hours ago)
- I know there are tons of factors
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:35 PM (17 hours ago)
- But ultimately, weighing all that you can know, which in your gut is the type of mystery you want to play out?
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:35 PM (17 hours ago)
- (for now, not long-term)
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:36 PM (17 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- Yep. OOC, I know that _I_ want non-Wonderland. I also want Hazel to act consistent with her character. But I can buy her doing non-Wonderland, so there's no need to make a bigger fuss than I need to
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:36 PM (17 hours ago)
- Okay, that has been my sense after listening for the past 3.5 hours.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:37 PM (17 hours ago)
- Now that choice has OOC and IC actions, and that is part of the game, IC and OOC. But I think that choice may ultimately be that which we should pursue then.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:38 PM (17 hours ago)
- So if you choose not to ping back Paige, I will provide another IC option to expedite you/Hazel getting back to nonWonderland investigations.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:41 PM (17 hours ago)
- Ok. Perhaps this would benefit from a feedback post on the broader topic of pacing within the game. My issue is less "I would like Hazel to become a mage faster
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:42 PM (17 hours ago)
- And that's fair.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:42 PM (17 hours ago)
- When we've played WF in the past, there have been three speeds:
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:42 PM (17 hours ago)
- I would also be happy, for example (to use a non-PC example) Brook's interaction with Whitney took a single OOC day instead of several OOC days
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:43 PM (17 hours ago)
- 1. Me totally off work for weeks with no kids and able to devote tons of gaming time.

- Jan 30, 2019, 9:43 PM (17 hours ago)
- * if Brook's
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:43 PM (17 hours ago)
- 2. Dead hiatus crap
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:43 PM (17 hours ago)
- 3. Me working and juggling lots and posting in fits and bursts, with those bursts not being turtles or jackrabbits.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:44 PM (17 hours ago)
- Now, to clarify though, despite a general and totally understandable desire to speed up game pacing
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:44 PM (17 hours ago)
- You are still saying that you would prefer switching to Hazel investigating nonWonderland mysteries now
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:44 PM (17 hours ago)
- Correct?
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:45 PM (17 hours ago)

- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:49 PM (17 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- In my perfect world (which isn't this one, except maybe in WF's original summer), Hazel would focus on Wonderland exclusively, and events would return to non-Wonderland at their own time (and a relatively brisk OOC time, since scenes in general would be moving faster)
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:50 PM (17 hours ago)
- In that world, Hazel would tell Paige "busy, call back later"
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:50 PM (17 hours ago)
- Understood. But since those halcyon days of yore are sadly not now (might be during a future summer?), what about now?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:51 PM (17 hours ago)
- Those halcyon days might not be totally gone, actually
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:51 PM (17 hours ago)
- I mean, not in the RL sense
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:51 PM (17 hours ago)
- I can't give you more time
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:51 PM (17 hours ago)

- Jan 30, 2019, 9:52 PM (17 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- But in the sense that there are ways to play through IG scenes at a faster OOC rate, which would have had the effect of WF's original summer moving at hyperspeed, but might now have the effect of WF simply moving at close to the original summer speed
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:53 PM (17 hours ago)
- Yes, that's true.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:53 PM (17 hours ago)
- Or potentially true, and/or potentially have other side-effects.
- Samuel Peer

- But I'm always open to such.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:54 PM (17 hours ago)
- Do you have any thoughts there--how to move through scenes in general at a faster pace?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:54 PM (17 hours ago)
- I have a bunch of my own, like I said, as it's been a big one in B&B lately
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:54 PM (17 hours ago)
- But this isn't B&B, either
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:54 PM (17 hours ago)
- * a big issue
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:55 PM (17 hours ago)
- I do, although they don't come out for me as net win due to their side-effects/costs.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:55 PM (17 hours ago)

- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:55 PM (17 hours ago)
- They do indeed have costs and side effects
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:55 PM (17 hours ago)
- BUT
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:55 PM (17 hours ago)
- First, can we first conclude/confirm the subject of Hazel/Wonderland/player mystery preference
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:55 PM (17 hours ago)
- As I just want to be clear
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:56 PM (17 hours ago)
- Given the above, your preference is to switch to nonWonderland investigations next
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:57 PM (17 hours ago)
- Correct?
- Calder Rooney <calderrooney@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:57 PM (17 hours ago)
- to Samuel
- My FIRST preference would be to stick exclusively with Wonderland, at a faster OOC pace. But hashing out ways to speed up scenes in general, and discussing the permutations thereof, is likely to take some time. And definitely longer than tonight
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:58 PM (17 hours ago)
- So for tonight, I am okay going by my SECOND preference, which is to switch to non-Wonderland at the same OOC pace
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:58 PM (17 hours ago)
- Which I would argue makes it your HIGHEST preference (for now) all other things being equal or as they are now.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:58 PM (17 hours ago)
- Correct?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:59 PM (17 hours ago)
- Correct. The world being as it is, rather than as we wish to make it
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 9:59 PM (17 hours ago)
- Just like my first preference would be to regularly have weeks off with no work and little responsibilities that I could just game.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:00 PM (17 hours ago)
- That may not be possible, but speeding up OOC scene speeds certainly is
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:00 PM (17 hours ago)
- Regardless, in the context of that choice, I do just want to confirm a couple of related issues.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:00 PM (17 hours ago)
- Shoot
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:03 PM (17 hours ago)
- to me
- 1. Just confirming that this choice is made with the knowledge that it could impact, to an unknown degree, her ability to engage in other investigations, of the outcome of those other investigations. That is, Brook could have chosen to first investigate Rockwell Fall before checking on Danny. If the 'thing' attacks and eats someone while Brook's in MPGH, that is a consequence. Granted, he could have been the one eaten, so not being eaten would be a consequence too. Maybe the eaten people then makes resuming the Rockwell investigation harder. Maybe it makes it easier. David won't/can't know for sure at the point of picking initially.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:04 PM (17 hours ago)
- Cool with that?
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:05 PM (17 hours ago)
- Yep. I'm willing to swallow that risk/potential cost
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:05 PM (17 hours ago)
- k.
- Calder Rooney
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:05 PM (17 hours ago)
- And Hazel will take some steps to potentially mitigate it
- Samuel Peer <samuel.o.peer@gmail.com>
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:08 PM (16 hours ago)
- to me
- 2. When/if you later wish to resume 'Wonderland' mysteries, just let me know. Granted, some mysteries are harder to pick up/resume than others. For example, if Kurt is helping the Henderson try to trap the Coyote Child on VHS, and they see her, but then Kurt decides to take a call from his ex and find out why she's bugging, he might then get off the phone and recording the Child could be a lot harder then, or it might take longer to find her again. So I want players to let me know whenever they want to switch gears, but I can't always promise that the gears can turn on a dime.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:09 PM (16 hours ago)
- So this is not "you shall never see Wonderland again", but it also isn't a promise to pick up Wonderland right were we leave off, either.
- Samuel Peer
- Jan 30, 2019, 10:09 PM (16 hours ago)
- Cool?

- Totally understood, as both a player and GM. Rocco has been slow to pursue some plot threads that may be harder now that further IG time has passed

- Then here would be my preference: playing out the first scene of Luke arriving at Dagobah, a summary of what he learns, and playing out leaving. (In a pinch, the last can slide, and/or the middle discovered via in media res). Perhaps at a later date we could play out further Dagobah scenes/fit them in via Analepesi. I want to do them justice, as they are very significant moments to the character and could be amazing scenes

- Hmm, I could see that. Namely, (1) opening with the 'Otherland' intro scene(s), then (2) flash-forwarding to 'waking up' in the 'real' world (real/wake take on additional meaning with an Awakening mage), (3) playing out 'real world' scenes broken up by GM-inserted (versus PC-spent Analepsis) flash-backs to said Otherland events.

- Yes. We could also simply "cheat" by playing out Luke going to Dagobah, arriving in Cloud City, doing his stuff there... then later, OOC, playing out all of the Dagobah scenes and sneakily inserting them into the logs before the Cloud City ones

- Jul 20, 2017, 10:42 AM
- I do very much want to play out Dagobah--but I don't want it to come at the immediate cost of Cloud City
