- 10/10 for the Nostalgic little kid in me I never want to lose. <br/><br/>6 for the jaded film snob in me I'm trying to kill off.<br/><br/>Guess who's winning? <br/><br/>This was the first film I ever saw in the theater. I was 3 years old and remember it very well. The smell of popcorn, my friend running up the aisle screaming when Skeletor first turned to the camera, my refusal to leave while he waited in the lobby. I always liked Skeletor more than He-Man and a lot of that came from this movie. I watched the cartoon, but the movie is what did it for me as a 3/4 year old. It really influenced me a lot, especially my action figure play as a goofy little kid who enjoyed doing long Skeletor dialogues alongside the usual action figure...action.<br/><br/>All these years later, I really do still have a fondness for this film and since it was such a big part of my childhood...I can't judge it too harshly. As a Screenwriter/Filmmaker myself, I understand the problems this movie faced in fitting an epic universe into a less than epic budget. For what it is, the movie works today, but beyond the nostalgia factor, the three undeniable things that still hold up are the realization of Skeletor's character (look, costume, LINES! ACTING!) the set designs for the greyskull throne room, and the majestic score.<br/><br/>I don't turn my nose up at good entertainment(I can watch this film and Apocalypse Now in one sitting and enjoy both for different reasons), and this is good entertainment, certainly with more substance than the 2 dimensional crud kids get today.<br/><br/>"Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man. Is it equal to the loneliness of Evil?" <br/><br/>Think about that line, and the underlying theme that Skeletor, even though he has "won" will never be whole because greed needs conflict to survive (i.e. more greedy pursuits, hence Skeletor's obsession with "breaking" He-Man).<br/><br/>"Men who crave power look back over the mistakes of their lives, pile them all together, and call it destiny." <br/><br/>What it did not have in budget, the film made up with heart. Some of the technical things aren't up to snuff, but again great writing will seep through even when hampered by the constraints of budget (meaning a last second..."let's set most of it on Earth" note from the producers) David Odell and Gary Goddard did the best with what they had, as did everyone else. Some went above and beyond, Bill Conti, Frank Langella, and for those reasons and more many of us remember this film fondly and enjoy watching it again.
- Masters of the Universe takes place in Eternia and Earth where He-man(Dolph Lundgren)and friends do battle with Skeletor's evil minions, in order to rescue the sorceress and free Castle Grayskull, which has been captured by Skeletor and his evil forces. <br/><br/>This is a great sci-fi action flick fantasy, which is very entertaining and is meant for all viewers of all ages. Surprisingly they do a good job, in showing some parts of Eternia but not all of it is shown in the movie, many things is missing in the movie from the cartoon series. They also did a great job with the costumes, special effects and make-up, especially Beast Man, Karg and Saurod.<br/><br/>As He-Man, Dolph Lundgren does look good in this role. With his hot look going for him, he does a terrific job as He-man, the man is definitely in good shape and must have been told to tan to look as much as possible like He-man.<br/><br/>I miss the good old days when they used to use laser firing guns, sword to sword combat and cool creative monsters.
- A misfiring, underdone epic that takes its inspiration not from life or literature, but from a toy line and the cartoon series it inspired.
- Masters of the Universe is based on a popular cartoon called "He-Man and The Masters of the Universe", the cartoon, itself is based on a toy franchise created by Mattel. Pig Boy was played by Richard Szyponder. Richard Szyponder was given a small part in the film. After winning a competition, where Richard got to visit the set and meet the cast and director. The executives at Mattel wanted director Gary Goddard to give Richard a part in the film and Richard was put in makeup and custome, as a servant of Skeletor, Pig Boy and is seen handing Skeletor his staff, when returning from Earth with the subdued He-Man. We see the bottomless pit beneath the throne room, which is filled with red water, which Skeletor fell into, in the climatic final battle with He-Man. Skeletor surfaces and says "I'll be back!" which ends in a freeze frame and fades to black. The extra scene was supposed to set the stage for the sequel "Masters of the Universe 2", but since the film didn't do very well at the Box Office, the sequel was dropped. The script for "Masters of the Universe 2" had been written, but was rewritten and became the script for the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film Cyborg. You are right, in the cartoon, He-Man never killed anyone, which was a "No!" for a cartoon aimed at children. But Masters of the Universe which was darker than the cartoon, which the film is based on, was an action movie and Skeletor's crack troops, which were written as robot warriors, were created for He-Man to smash, fight and kill and Skeletor's crack troops are the only people He-Man and his companions kill throughout the movie. It's assumed they were killed by Skeletor, when Skeletor used the cosmic key to enter the city and break into Castle Grayskull. Gwildor had a secret passage in his home, which led to caverns beneath Castle Grayskull. Frank Langella was offered the role of Skeletor and Frank Langella decided to take the role of Skeletor, because he wanted to do it for his son Alex, whom was a fan of He-Man and Langella had felt Skeletor was a role he couldn't refuse. Frank Langella admitted in an interview that Skeletor was his favorite role. a5c7b9f00b
