- In later years, when I was able to return her remains to what was left of her family, I learned that she had grown up on one of the farm planets of the Gazrond Belt, and had stowed away on a star freighter at the age of fourteen to see the wonders of the universe and found there were no wonders left. Instead there was a war that threatens all reality. At first she ran, but one day, helping an old soldier die in a crater full of mud snakes under a burning moon, she realised that was nowhere left to hide.
