Chapter 6 [School Enrollment]
　Two months has passed since the start of the first term in Bertram kingdom royal institute.
ベルトラム王立学院の新年度が始まって既に二か月が経過している。

　Since Rio was entering in the middle of the term, it's only natural that he became the center of attention.
リオは中途入学することになったわけだが、当然のように注目を集めることとなった。

　It was arranged for Rio to be introduced in the first period homeroom.
初めてのホームルームではリオが自己紹介をすることとなった。

「Starting today I will be studying together with everyone in this classroom.   My name is Rio.  Please take care of me for the next six years」
今日から皆様と同じこの教室で学ばせていただくこととなりました。リオと申します。どうぞ六年間よろしくお願いします」


　Rio introduced himslef in a flat tone  without hestitation.
と、リオは淀みのない口調で淡々と挨拶をした。


「Transfer student in the middle of the term?」
中途入学生？

「No family name. So  a commoner?」
家名持ちではない。平民か」

「Why is a commoner entering in the middle of the term?」
平民がどうして中途入学を？

「From what I heard.  He is the orphan who rescued Christina-sama from danger. And enrolling into the Royal institute with his majesty’s recommendation is his reward」
私聞きましたわ。何でもクリスティーナ様の危機を助けた孤児がいると。 その恩賞で国王陛下の推薦により王立学院に入学することになったとか」

「Orphan? And because of that this kind of guy is enrolling into the royal institute? 」
孤児？そんな奴がこの栄えある王立学院に入学するというのか？


　No one applausing.
拍手の一つも起こらない。

　Instead of that the  sound of murmuring can be heard from all of the students who are evaluaing him, all of the students eyes are gathered at Rio.
代わりに品定めをするような会話が随所で行われ、似たような視線がリオに集められた。

　A tinge of hatred surfaced, this seven years-old kid had already tainted the place for nobles to study.
随分と小憎たらしいが、それは七歳にして貴族社会に染まっている姿だった。

　As for the kids of the high class noble who were serving in the royal castle, they already knew about this beforehand.
王城に勤める上流貴族の子弟は親から、既にリオの情報が与えられているようである。

　Naturally they also know that Rio is an orphan. They're looking at Rio like somekind of strange animal. That's understandable since they come from the privilaged class.
当然のようにリオが孤児であったということも知られており、特権階級である彼らはリオを珍妙な生き物でも見るような視線を送っていた。

　As for Rio himself, he already expected that things will turned out like this.
リオにとっては完全に予想通りの展開である。

　His facial expression is completely calm and serene, Rio’s line of sight is looking at the entire class.
まったく気にした様子のない冷静な表情を浮かべて、リオは視線だけ動かしてクラスを一瞥した。

　He is looking at the more rthan 100  people in the classroom.
見渡してみたところ百人ほどの生徒が教室の中にいた。


　Class 1-3, each class consists of 100 kids.
Three classes per year, each consisting of around 100 students.
一学年三クラスで、一クラスの人数が百人である。

　It's very clear that there is a wall of social position between the noble and commoner, there is also a differece of classes among nobles. There is a regulation in the school to not bring out social position and connection.
But, looking at the atmosphere in the classroom, it's clear that it is only a facade.
平民と貴族の間には身分の差という明確な壁が存在し、貴族の中でも家格という壁が存在するが、学院の中での関係に身分を持ち出さないというのが建前として校則となっている。
だが、クラスの雰囲気からすると、それは形骸化しているようである。

まぁ学院で関係なくとも卒業したら関係が大有りだからな。

　Suddenly, Rio gaze fall upon a familiar face.
ふと、リオは一人だけ見知った顔を見つけた。

　That person sits on the back corner of the classroom.
その人物は教室の後ろの席に座っている。

　Surrounded by her followers from high pedigree who sit around her, they send a despising gaze towards Rio. When her line of sight matched with Rio’s, Christina pouts her lips in displeasure. It looks like she hates me very much, Rio said while laughing with cynism in his thoughs.
周囲にはいかにも家柄の高そうな人物達が座っており、リオのことを見下したように見つめている。リオと視線が合うと、クリスティーナは不機嫌そうにそっぽを向いた。ずいぶん嫌われているようだと、リオは内心で皮肉げに笑った。

　Rio also has no intentions to be involved with Christina.
リオとしてもクリスティーナとは関わるつもりは毛頭ない。

　If she hates Rio, that will be more convenient for him.
あちらがリオに嫌悪感を抱いているというのならば、むしろ好都合であった。


「Fumu, question from students.............there is none right.  Yosh.  Rio.  You can sit at that empty seat. Basically sit wherever you want, but I recommend you to sit at that empty seat for now. That's all」
ふむ、生徒からの質問は……ないようだな。よし。リオ。. 空いている席に座れ。基本的に席は自由だが、今空いている席に座ることをお薦めする。以上だ」

「Understood」
わかりました」

　The lecturer who was standing besides Rio simply said so, and urged Rio to sit. Rio who also didn't like to standing any longer in front of the class, quickly moving to the empty seat.
リオの横で立っていた講師は簡潔にそう言うと、リオに着席を促した。リオとしても、これ以上教室の前に突っ立っているのは好ましくなかったので、さっさと空いている席へと移動する。
　Thus Rio’s life in the institute began.
こうしてリオの学院生活は始まった。

　There are four classes in one day, it takes one hour for each class.
授業は一日四コマ、一コマあたり一時間半をかけて行われる。

　But, a problem appeared right in the first class.
最初の授業で、問題は起こった。

　And that was math class.
それは算術の時間だった。

「Well.  yeah, let see Rio the transfer student. Please solve this problem」
そうね。じゃあ、新しく入ったリオとか言ったわね。 アンタこの問題解いてみなさい」


　Said the lecturer in charge of the class. Each class has different lecturers.
  クラスの担任となる講師はいるが、科目ごとに担当する講師は異なるようであった。

　The one in charge of the math class is a considerably young lecturer.
算術の授業を担当しているのはかなり若い少女の講師である。

　If it was in Japan she would be around the upper grade of elementary school. She would actually be a junior high scool student but her looks betray her. That girl pointed at Rio. And she was gesturing at the problem that can be compared to first grade elementary school problem in Japan which anyone could solve.
日本ならばまだ小学校高学年、百歩譲って中学生程度にしか見えない、そんな少女がリオを指した。 指定された問題は日本の小学一年生ならば誰でも解けるような非常に簡単な問題であった。

　But, Rio didn't know the letters.
しかし、リオがそれを理解することはできない。

「E~~tto, Sorry but I can't write」
えっと、書いてある数字が読めません」


　Rio also can't read.
そう、リオは数字が読めないのだ。

　And, following that is a moment of silence that was followed by a burst of laughter.
 そのことを伝えると、一瞬の静寂の後にクラス中から笑いが起こった。

「Oioi. Enrolling in the royal institute but can't read」
おいおい。数字も読めないのに王立学院に入学できたのかよ」

「we must study together with this lowly fellow who can't read numbers.........」
数字すら読めぬ下賤なものと一緒に学ぶことになるとは……」

「A~, that right.. You didn't take admission test」
あー、あれでしょ。 アイツ試験受けてないんでしょ」

「I can't accept this lowly fellow. Who is also stupid」
これだから下賤な奴がいると嫌なんだよな。 頭悪いし」

　To be learning together with him for years, the another kids in the class felt a sense of superiority.
クラスの子弟達は他者をして優越感に浸ることをこの歳にして覚えている。

　Their conversations which are ridiculing Rio can be heard from every direction.
至る所でリオを小馬鹿にする会話が繰り広げられた。

「I see, so you can't read. You've not received education in that case.  .........Okay. I will give you extra lesson afterwards.  Come to my seminar room after school.  Today just listen to my lecture. If you dodn't understand, just ask.」
そっか、数字を読めないのね。 そこから教えないといけないのか。……いいわ。 あんたには後で私が数字を教えてあげる。放課後になったら私の研究室に来ること。今日のところは訳が分かんないだろうけどそのまま授業を聞いてなさい.


　Said the girl while she was a little surprised at Rio’s level of education.
と、少女は頭を抱えながら言った。

「Understood」
わかりました」

　Then Rio decided to listening to the lesson.
リオは特に気にした様子もなくその決定に従った。

「Nee~, you」
ねぇ、あなた」

　A voice called out to Rio after the math class.
算術の授業が終わったところでリオに声がかけられた。

　Looking at the one who call him, she is a perfect example of an Ojou-sama* girl, standing in front of her followers.
 相手の方を見ると、典型的なお嬢様といった可愛らしい少女が、何人かの取り巻きを連れて立っていた。

　Rio noticed that they're the group that was sitting around Christina.
リオはクリスティーナの近くに座っていた集団だったことに気づく。

「Yes, what is it?」
はい、何か？

「what is it?  Well, excuse me.  What did you mean in the previous class?」
はい、何か？　先ほどの講義はどういうことですの？
「何か？　じゃ、ありませんわ。先ほどの講義はどういうことですの？」


　The girl shows an expression as if she is lamenting for Rio.
嘆かわしいと言わんばかりの表情を少女は浮かべた。

「What about? It's about you who can't read. In the history of the royal institute, especially when you're enrolling in the same class as Christina-sama and me, for a monkey to be mixed in it」
数字すら理解できないなんて。この歴史ある王立学院に、しかもクリスティーナ王女殿下や私のいるクラスに、猿が紛れ込んだと思ってしまいましたわ」

　It seems Rio received complain from the girl. Rio sighed both in his mind and his mouth, then answered to the one who raise the complaint to him.
どうやらこの少女はリオにクレームをつけにきたらしい。リオは内心でため息を吐きつつも、向き合って対応することにした。

「Excuse me. I'm illiterate anyway.」
すいません。何分、無学なもので」

　It's true that he is illiterate in this world.
この世界で無学なのは事実だ。
　This sort of companion will be more and more corrupted after this.
これからこういった相手が腐るほど沸いてくるのだろう。
　The kind of person who flat-outly said that in front of him, is the most decent person.
こういう手合いはまともに相手をせずに、言わせるだけ言わせておくのが無難だ。
　Up till now thanks to the people from privilage class, he developed some kind of stress resistant and gained more than enough understanding toward this world’s society.
今までにあった特権階級の人間達のおかげで、ストレス耐性と処世術は十二分に身に着けることができた。

「Since you're entering in the middle of term, I expect that you already learned four basic calculation in math*, but I'm extremely dissapointed」
[TL : addition, substraction, multiplication, division]
中途入学するくらいだから、平民でも算術の基礎である四則演算は楽々こなせるのかと思いましたけど、とんだ期待外れでしたわ」

　The girl islooking at Rio with scorning eyes.
少女はリオを蔑むように見つめた。

「Really. I expected that you're a bit poor compared to her highness princess Christina and the daughter of duke Fonsyn*, but I still had some expectations from this gloomy fellow.」

　It looks like the leader of those followers is called Roana.

どうやら取り巻きのリーダーである少女の名はロアナというらしい。
　Many kids standing near Roana are agreeing with her.
ロアナに同調するように傍に立っていた気障な男が言った。

「I laugh really hard when you said that you can't read the number. No, it's already in my expectation」
それを数字すら理解できないとはなかなか笑わせてもらいました。いや、かえって期待通りだったのかもしれません」

　A boy saying that line points at Rio and even looks at him with the expression of ridicule.
言って、道化でも見ているかのような視線を、少年はリオに向けてきた。

「Ha~. With this I lost my expectation for another classes.」
 これじゃ他の講義も期待できそうにありませんわね」

　Said Roana while sighing.
ロアナが小さく溜息を吐く。

「Anyway, I’m starting to wonder why you are even sitting in this place. Now, you just burn in your mind an expression of  gratitude being in this place*.  The gloomy you has become an out-of-place existance in this place*」
[TLC : damn it, it's back! -->まずは貴方が今この場所に座っていられることを疑問に思いなさい。そしてそのありがたみに気づいて感謝の念でその身を焦がすのです。貴方はそれくらいに場違いな場所にいるのですから」]

「Understood. Roana-sama. Thank you for your consideration」
わかりました。ロアナ様。お気遣いいただきありがとうございます」

　Rio said that while lowering his head.
と、礼儀正しく頭を下げながら、リオが言った。
　Seeing that, Roana gaaped a bit, admiring his manner.
その様子を見て感心したようにロアナが口を開く。

「Ara, it looks like you at least have courtesy.  Fine then.  You just need to be more dilligent since it's also my duty, because Christina-sama is also the class representative.  Besides, it's a nobles duty to lead the commoner」
あら、一応、礼儀はわきまえているみたいですね。いいのよ。これもクリスティーナ様の名代としてクラス代表を務めさせていただいている私の責務ですから。それにそうでなくとも平民を導くのも貴族の役目です」

「Thank you very much」
ありがとうございます」

　As if it was a natural thing, that girl said that line with an expesrrion full of confidence.
それが当然のことであるかのように、少女は自信に満ちた表情で言った。

「As expected of Roana-sama」
さすがはロアナ様です」

　Her followers agrees with her immediately.

取り巻きの連中もすかさず賛同する。
　Suddenly, they noticed that Rio is looking at them with a smirk on his face. Somehow, it looks like he is grateful that their self-esteem is lower than himself*.
[TLC : ふと、周囲の連中を見てみるとニヤニヤとリオの方を見ていることに気づいた。
どうやら自分よりもレベルの低い者を見て自尊心を満たしているようだ。]

　Since Rio already knew that Roana’s followers has wicked minds.

「Next is history class but, you also can't read letter right?  It's frustating that even with great effort, you will only catch up a little」[TLC : 次は歴史の授業ですけれど、どうせ文字も読めないのでしょう？　悔しいと思うのなら努力して少しでも早く這い上がってくることね」]

　After saying that, Roana went back to her seat.
そう言うと、ロアナは自分達が座っていた席の方へと戻っていった。

　And, before long the next lecturer came.
そして間もなくして次の講義の先生がやって来る。

　As usual, Rio can't write nor read the letters on the blackboard.　As such, he didn't pick his notebook. He only spent his time trying to memorizing the content of the lesson.
案の定、リオは文字も読めないので黒板に書かれたことは理解できなかった。それゆえ、ノートはとらないで、話の内容を暗記することに集中して過ごした。

　And thus, the last class today is martial arts practice.
 そして、本日最後に行われたのが武術の講義である。

　Training in martial arts and magic is done together, but for elementary grade the martial arts training isn't too rigorous since it might destroy their body.　For the first year in elementary course, the subject is only to be familiarised with weapons and armor. That's how they usually do it every year.
武術と魔法の講義は二コマを通して行われるが、武術の講義に関しては身体を壊さないためにも初等科の段階では過酷なことは行われない。初等科一年生の段階では各々の得意なジャンルを見つけるために幅広い内容の武具に触れることになる。

「Well, welcome. Today we will learn about the sword stance.  After we do one set for ten minute we will take a break for ten minutes You will be practicing the sword stance that I taught in the previous lesson.  Well, let's start with three sets. HA!」
[TLC : さて、今日は剣の型について学んでもらう。こないだの講義で教えた型を十分その後の休憩が十分でワンセットとする。まずはそれを三セットだ。]

　After saying that, the students dispersed. They're are trying to mimick the sword stance with wooden swords in their hands.
  そう言われると生徒達は木剣を手に習った剣の型を再現する。
　When the teacher arrived in front of Rio he stopped his instruction.
指示を終えると教官の一人がリオの所へやって来た。

「Rio.  Your progress is behind everyone else, so I will personally teach you the sword stance.   Come here」
リオ。お前は一人だけ進行が遅れているから俺が直々に型を教えてやる。付いて来い」

　Following the teacher’s instruction, Rio separated himself from the group of students.
教官の指示に従い付いて行く。やって来たのは生徒達の位置から離れた場所であった。

「You, can you show me how you hold your sword?」
お前、剣を握ったことはあるのか？

「Yes. At once」
はい。 一応は」

「Hmm, I see. Then, I will first check your stance. Try to hit me once with that sword. Come whenever you are ready」
む、そうか。なら、まずはお前がどの程度できるのかチェックしてやる。その剣で俺に一撃でも当ててみろ。いつでもかかって来い」

　Right after saying that, the teacher readies his stance. そう言うやいなや、教官は剣を構えた。

　Seeing that, Rio thinks that it  was a stance without any opening forged from his real life combat experiences. 　While he was looking, he tried to find an opening in the teacher’s stance. 　Perhaps it will be an easy win if he strenghthened his blow with magic by using physical and flesh reinforcement. 　But, he feels uneasy about doing so since his grade didn't learn about reinforcement magic yet.

それを見て、実戦的な無駄のない構えだと、リオは思った。教官の構えを見ながらどうしたものかと考える。おそらく魔力で身体能力と肉体を強化すれば一撃を与えることは容易だろう。だが、魔法を習っていない段階でそれをするとどう思われるかが不安であった。

　Since it's already known that he rescued Christina and Flora, it won't be unnatural even if he showed his true strength.
クリスティーナとフローラを助けたという事実は知れ渡っているため、ある程度の強さを見せても不自然に思われることはないだろう。

　Right after the teacher said that, Rio went charging at him.
教官が言い終わるやいなや、リオは走り出した。
　When he got near the teacher, he release his blow but also prepared for retreat*. [TLC : 教官に近寄ると、様子見の意味を込めて剣を薙いだ。]

ほう。良い太刀筋だ。それなら手首も痛めない」

　Reacting to Rio’s sword, the teacher said that while looking at Rio. He held his sword with one hand and hid the rest of his body with his sword.
 リオの剣を受け止めると、教官はその剣の持ち方と刃の立て方を見て、そう言った。

　As expected of the teacher with sharp observations. By saying that, it means that Rio surpassed his expectation.
教官というだけあって観察眼は優れているようだとリオは判断する。

うむ。いいぞ！リオ、お前は騎士に向いている！


　The teacher said that judgement with a happy face though Rio is charging at him. Nothing can be done to his hot-blooded temperament. Honesty, it's nothing but something that will hinder you*. [TLC : 正直、少しばかり暑苦しい。]
と、笑顔でリオの打ち込みを捌きながら、教官は言った。どうにも熱血な気質があるようだ。正直、少しばかり暑苦しい。


「Unfortunately I have no interests in becoming a knight」
 あいにく騎士に興味はありません」

「Why？That's fine.  Well, your time in the institute has just started.  Don't worry, I will train you in the knight swordmanship」
そうね。まぁ学院生活は長い。騎士の剣術を教え込んでやる、安心しろ」

「tsu! ？ 」


　Suddenly the teacher realeased a sharp blow to Rio.
突如、教官の側から鋭い一撃がリオに放たれた。


「Hou~.  How  will you fend this blow?」
ほう。 今の一撃に反応するか」

「Is it not that sensei won't attack?..........」
先生の方から攻撃はしないんじゃないんですか……」

「There is no need to abide such rule!  I know that you're skilled enough. Good, once again」
そんなルールはない！ が、お前の実力はわかった。 もういいぞ」


　The teacher swung his sword again.
 教官が剣を降ろす。

　Moreover, he was also trying to disarm Rio’s sword.
それに合わせてリオも剣を降ろした。


「In terms of power and speed, generally it's a perfect score for basic ability......extremely fine movement.   ......Well, this institute teaches this kingdom’s swordmanship which is a very different swordmanship style.  Where did you learn such swordmanship? 」
パワー、スピードはともかく、基礎的な技量について言えば満点……、非常に綺麗な動きだ。まぁ、学院で教える王国流の剣術とは大きく違ったがな。どこでその剣術を身に着けた？

　Rio said the most useful explanation that came to his mind.
   と、便利な言い訳だと思いながら、リオは言った。


「I see......... I'm sorry.  You must be practicing it quite a lot」
そうか……。すまない。  よほど反復練習したのだろうな」

「Yes」
いえ」


　Rio answered back with an indifferent tone.
特に気にした様子もなくリオは返した。

「Well your basic swordsmanship is very solid.  To the point that it won't have harmful effects even if you learn this kingdom swordsmanship style.  I'll shape your stance」
まぁ基礎はどの剣術にも通じるところがある。それだけ基礎が身に付いているのならば王国流の剣術を学んでも弊害はないだろう。型を教えてやる」


　It was decided that Rio will learn swordsmanship after school.
型を習った後はリオもクラスに合流して剣を振るうことになった。

　When he was returning, Rio suddenly felt that someone was watching him.
戻ってくると、ふと、リオは視線を感じた。

　And from the source of it, he can see Roana and Christina.
そちらを見てみるとクリスティーナとロアナがいた。

　When Christina and Rio’s eyes met, she quickly turned away Roana turned to stone in surprise when she saw Rio.
クリスティーナはリオと視線が合うやすぐに目を逸らしたが、ロアナは驚愕の表情でリオの方を見て固まっていた。


　It would seem that he was watched. [TLC : 見られていたのだろうか。]

　It's not like it mattered, anyways.
それほど大したことはしたつもりはなかったが、どうしたのか。

　Rio was a bit confused.
リオは僅かに疑問に思った。

　But as he had no time to worry about that, Rio continue his sword stance training.
が、それ以上は考えることはなく、型の練習を始めた。
