  4. the poils talking
  5. ---------
  6.
  7. The war was over.
  8.
  9. That was the best way to describe it for 'Yellow Pearl' as 'Commander Steven Rose Quartz Universe' described it.
  10.
  11. Still, she doted over Yellow Diamond's heavily scratched gem nonetheless.
  12.
  13. This 'bedroom' was not a fitting place for a Diamond, in her opinion, but it would do until her leader was recovered enough to attend the surrender negotiations.
  14.
  15. Quietly, she wept. There would not be negotiations.
  16.
  17. A hand made its way to her shoulder, and she could scarcely move for the warmth of contact.
  18.
  19. “Are you all right?” a soft voice queried.
  20.
  21. Training and instincts from years of service told her to rebuff the contact, and she pulled away from the touch.
  22.
  23. Turning to face the source of the contact, she found a blue relic staring at her in a strange white garment.
  24.
  25. “You?!?” she squawked, nearly falling back onto the bed.
  26.
  27. “Yes,” the other Pearl admitted softly, hands clutched together in front of her. It was a pose she had seen in court a few times, thousands of years ago.
  28.
  29. Yellow Pearl could not control her voice, and soon was screeching, “you were shattered alongside your Diamond! You were a hero among Pearls!”
  30.
  31. “No. I was destabilized and nearly crushed under Blue Diamond's Sky Fortress.” The Gem did not raise her voice despite the panic of her equal. “They found me, and I have tried my best to adjust.”
  32.
  33. “What...is that garment? Is it a sign of your new allegiance?”
  34.
  35. “Oh. I...work for humans now. This is a 't-shirt', and it reports that I am an 'employee' of 'It's a Wash', which is some sort of water delivery facility.” She smiled. “I did not know you personally, but the Crystal Gems call me 'Blue Pearl'.”
  36.
  37. “They call me 'Yellow Pearl',” she answered, fighting to control her anxiety. Even such a storied hero of her culture had not only fallen, but had surrendered rather than shatter honorably.
  38.
  39. It both made her feel a measure of relief and guilt.
  40.
  41. It was normal for Pearls to surrender in these circumstances. Not all could be as fearsome or courageous as the terrifying renegade.
  42.
  43. “Are you two all right in here?” called the aforementioned from downstairs.
  44.
  45. It was hard to believe, for Yellow Pearl, that her superior had fallen to a stroke from the blade of a Pearl.
  46.
  47. She bowed her head and remained silent, praying that would stay the blade of the traitor.
  48.
  49. “Yes. We were just speaking.”
  50.
  51. “Oh.” The only Pearl here who was simply called by name gave a soft shrug of the shoulders. “She has not even attempted to reform yet, has she?”
  52.
  53. They all looked toward Yellow Diamond.
  54.
  55. Yellow Pearl turned her gaze back toward the renegade and glared. “What do you care? You're the one who nearly shattered her!”
  56.
  57. “She attempted to hurt Steven,” Pearl said as if that made all the sense in the world, “if she had succeeded, I would have destroyed her, and I would be sprinkling the dust all over you right now to remind you of what happens when you hurt Steven.”
  58.
  59. She took a knee. “I beg you, don't harm her further!”
  60.
  61. “That depends on her actions. We hurt her once. If she is not obedient to our wishes, she will shatter. This time, she will not be leading an elite strike force. She will be alone. Her end will be quick.” Pearl turned away and walked toward the door. “Make sure she knows that.”
  62.
  63. With that, Pearl left the house.
  64.
  65. Blue Pearl reached down and petted her on the head. “Steven told me she can get like that. It's going to be okay.”
  66.
  67. Yellow Pearl knew it would not be okay, and so she wept.
