- Integrated Writing
- A typical prompt is like, “Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge specific points made in the reading passage.”
- - If you don’t mention any points from the lecture, the best you can get is 1 point (out of 5) on your integrated writing.
- - To make sure you get 1 point instead of 0, paraphrase or summarize the points from the reading (in your own words), don’t simply copy sentences.
- - It’s possible to try to get more than 1 point even if you didn’t understand the lecture.
- ---
- DELTA p. 392 - Take 3 minuutes to read about wind energy.
- points from the Reading:
- R0 (main idea) = wind energy is good
- R1 = it’s land and efficient (it wouldn’t take much land to supply 20% of US’s energy)
- R2 = it’s cheap
- R3 = it’s safe and environmentally friendly
- ---
- Imagine that you have no idea at all about what the lecturer said. What can you write about to try to get a higher score than 1 (which you can get by explaining the text in your own words)?
- - The prompt tells you the lecture challenges points from the passage. (Also, you should be able to guess this from the fact that the passage takes a specific position on wind energy.)
- L0 = wind energy is not good / wind energy has some problems (drawbacks)
- (We should be able to guess this before we even finish the reading.)
- - You will have to be a bit more clever to make good guesses about the other points in the listening.
- L1 = unpredictable and variable (we can’t get wind everywhere, and some days have no wind)
- L2 = additional costs (expensive to build even if it’s cheap to maintain; maybe it’s cheap from energy companies because the government pays part of the cost)
- L3 = safety and environmental problems (harmful for birds) [noise]
- ---
- After you make these guesses, write your response as if these are really the points from the listening.
- Example introductory paragraph:
- The reading and the lecture are about wind power. The reading stresses the advantages of wind power for land use, the economy, and the environment. In contrast, the lecture describes the disadvantages of wind power and challenges the position of the reading.
- Example fourth paragraph (about R3/L3):
- The third point from the reading is that wind energy is good for the environment and our safety. It doesn’t cause pollution and will reduce our need for fossil fuels. The speaker, on the other hand, talks about some environmental and safety problems with wind power. For example, turbines can be very harmful for birds. This contradicts the point from the reading that wind energy is environmentally friendly.
- ---
- Listen to the lecture and check if our guesses were good.
- - If the rest of the writing was good (few mistakes, good transition signals and organization), our guesses could get a score of 4.
- ---
- DELTA p. 387 - Take 3 minutes to read the passage.
