52. In 18th century North America during the French and Indian War, a white man adopted by the last members of a dying tribe called the Mohicans unwittingly becomes the protector of the two daughters of a British colonel, who have been targeted by Magua, a sadistic and vengeful Huron warrior who has dedicated his life to destroying the girls' father for a past injustice.
 53. British and French troops do battle in colonial America, with aid from various native American war parties. The British troops enlist the help of local colonial militia men, who are reluctant to leave their homes undefended. A budding romance between a British officer's daughter and an independent man who was reared as a Mohican complicates things for the British officer, as the adopted Mohican pursues his own agenda despite the wrath of different people on both sides of the conflict.
 54. I simply love this film! Based on a historical novel of the 18th century French and Indian Wars, Last of the Mohicans directed by Michael Mann gives a powerfully driven account of the lives of British settlers, soldiers and the Native American Indians fighting for survival.

Daniel Day-Lewis and all the other actors give an impressive and convincing performance.

The cinematography and the soundtrack were both epic.

If you want a good running music to listen to use this soundtrack. Each time I run, I can imagine myself running pass hordes of Huron braves - it definitely keeps me going!!!
 55. Michael Mann's films are never bad, but this one truly is a beauty. Based on Cooper's novel and an earlier screenplay, the film could have come along as "okay", nothing more. Yet Mann makes it breathtaking thanks to three key elements: Daniel Day-Lewis (the method-man looks even more here heroic than Gibson's William Wallace in Braveheart!), the photography (the scenery and battles are filmed with equal beauty, the already excellent Spinoti never surpassed his work on this) and one of the best action scores ever (the themes by Trevor Jones are among the greatest music ever associated to the film industry). "Last of the Mohicans" is also a very smart romantic portrayal, thanks to it's pragmatism and impartiality, and above all, the film feels honest and authentic; that's something you rarely get in a historical epic, for at heart this is what Mann's film remains. It just also happens to be an unusually good one!
 56. When this historical adventure kicks in, it's thrilling in the way old-fashioned epics used to be, but its romanticism has a fierce, violent physicality that gives it a distinctively modern stamp.
 57. This basic type of weapon was carried by many native American tribes dating back over a thousand years. Hawkeye uses a Pennsylvania Flintlock Rifle. Magua, having been spurned by the Huron sachem, resentfully leaves the Huron village with Alice, while Poe and Cora rejoin Chingachgook and Uncas. Poe shoots Duncan (Steven Waddington) to ease his suffering at being burned alive. Uncas runs ahead to catch up with Magua and rescue Alice. He manages to kill a few of Magua's warriors, but Magua winds up slashing his abdomen, stabbing him in the side, slitting his neck, and pushing him off a cliff before Chingachgook and Poe can catch up. Seeing Uncas killed, Alice inches close to the edge of the cliff. Magua reaches his hand out to her, but she allows herself to wordlessly topple over and join Uncas. When Poe catches up, he shoots several more warriors with his long rifles while Chingachgook engages Magua in hand/hand combat to avenge his son's death, eventually slicing Magua's abdomen open. In the final scene, Chingachgook, Poe, and Cora stand together at the edge of a cliff in silent ritual for Uncas' passing. Chingachgook then says a prayer to the Great Spirit, asking him to welcome Uncas into the Great Warrior's Council Fire and to ask all of his people who have gone before to await his coming, he who is the last of the Mohicans. Poe holds Cora in his arms as he and Chingachgook look sadly across the pristine hills and valleys. Yes, it is. The Blu-ray disc includes a version called Director's Definitive Cut (DDC), which is very confusing due to the fact, that Michal Mann created a Director's Cut (DC) years ago. After all these years, Mann sat down in the editing room once more and did the third cut of his film. This DDC is clearly more rooted in the theatrical cut and can be described as a mixture between the theatrical cut and the old DC. Here are many differences that do also exist between the theatrical cut and the old Directors Cut. The DDC mostly restores changes back to the way they were in the theatrical cut or keeps the extensions Mann made for the normal DC. This leads up to a runtime which is only approximately 2 minutes shorter than the old DC. The DDC-exclusive changes aren't of much importance and do not have a major impact on the film since they mostly include inserted shots or other minor bits and pieces. a5c7b9f00b
