  2. Chapter 1
  3. Bring Forth the Unexpected
  4. Laurens Weiskopf
  5. The man stood nervous in front of the small crowd of soldiers.
  6. Yes, he had been tasked with creating a wunderwaffe for the southern
  7. to placate the command of that region. As time went on, however, the man
  8. could not help but place doubt upon the leadership of the commander. It
  9. was ultimately his rejection of a wunderwaffe which led to this very
  10. moment.
  11. "Now, gentlemen," he started off, his scratchy voice scraping their
  12. ear drums, met with little reaction. "I've called you here because I've
  13. been informed that you are the best of the best." He carefully examined
  14. the faces of each of the 14 men before him. Two squads, and their
  15. leader. "You are about to conduct a daring test, one which may very well
  16. completely upset the balance of this war."
  17. He looked behind him. His assistant, stoic as always, stood at the
  18. ready, the control panel unlit. Damn it, why didn't he just have the
  19. assistant take on the speech? One of the soldiers coughed, jolting him
  20. from his thoughts. "Ah, Tilman, if you would..."
  21. Tilman went over the procedure beautifully. Everything they had
  22. practiced for came to this moment, and Tilman refused to disappoint him.
  23. The panel lit up and the machine began to whir under its cover. He
  24. couldn't help but feel giddy. Everything he had worked for led to this
  25. exact moment.
  26. "G... Gentlemen, you will make history, in the face... Yes, face of
  27. your co... commander." He took a moment to steady his breathing, before
  28. continuing. "I trust you are aware of the situation. The British have
  29. set up an immense line of defense to the west of here. While your
  30. commander has an easy way to deal them for now, we should still keep
  31. them on their toes. I h-." He was abruptly stopped by an annoyed shout.
  32. "You woke all of us up at 3, 4 in the fucking morning for this shit?
  33. God damn it, just get on with it." The scientist swallowed a growing
  34. lump, slowly turning to face his captive audience. He recognized that
  35. voice, and those angry eyes piercing his skull. He quickly turned back,
  36. not wishing to face the wrath of the platoon leader.
  37. "Y... yes sir." He quickly made his way to the covers, tearing the
  38. sheet off to reveal the ominous blue glow. With a twirl, he turned to
  39. his audience, and threw the blanket away. "I have discovered the secret
  40. of teleportation! And you, gentlemen, shall be the first soldiers to
  41. demonstrate its tactical advantages!"
  42. There were murmur within the crowds. "Teleportation? What a farce."
  43. The murmurs continued as he strained his ears to listen in. While most
  44. seemed to consider it completely insane, and that the scientist had just
  45. gone mad, the same platoon commander who ridiculed him was now giving an
  46. approving nod. It seemed that he, of all people, could at least see the
  47. potential advantages.
  48. "Laurens, the machine's reporting unusual activity." He turned to
  49. Tilman, his face paled slightly. This couldn't be happening, not now!
  50. Years of research, a chance to prove everyone else wrong, and all
  51. screeching to a half NOW!?
  52. "What do you mean?" He kept his voice level. His panic shouldn't be
  53. shown. It can't be shown.
  54. "It looks like there's an unexepected power draw towards the
  55. designator module."
  56. "Is it within acceptable parameters?"
  57. There was a pregnant pause in the air, only interrupted by the
  58. breathing of those seated, and the sudden earpiercing pop coming from
  59. the machine. The signature grinding followed by a click could be heard
  60. as Tilman slammed the emergency power cutoff switch, but the machine
  61. simply began to loudly rattle as the hum grew more feverent. The
  62. previously calming blue turned to an ominious purple, before becoming a
  63. feverish red. Smoke poured out of its frontal grate.
  64. "Shit! Go," he urged the squads before him, "save yourselves!" They
  65. did not need to be told twice as they began to run out of the makeshift
  66. shack that contained his device, leaving their equipment behind in the
  67. process. He then turned to Tilman. "I'm going to try to save the device,
  68. get out of here!"
  69. Tilman hesitated, before nodding and heading for the door. Laurens
  70. instead grabbed the wrench underneath the podium-like panel, and
  71. scrambled over to the machine. He would not even get a chance to rest
  72. his wrench on the first bolt before a sudden thundering noise would roll
  73. across the desert.

  75. Lance Corporal Zac Burton
  76. There was nothing better than a good cup of tea in the morning.
  77. Zac took another sip of the still warm cup of tea. Thuds brought Zac to
  78. his left, where he saw his sergeant banging on the radio, the runner
  79. command had sent tinkering with a different radio next to him.
  80. "As I was saying, sir, all radios seem to not be working," the
  81. runner prattled on. "

  83. Chapter Notes
  84. I'm not a very good author, so apologies for the roughness of it all.
  85. I especially wish to apologize for the perspective shifts. I was more
  86. or less experimenting with this. I don't think I did very well though.
  87.
  88. I don't know much about military combat and organization, but I felt
  89. like I'd give it a shot, considering I really like WW2 and the general
  90. war time aesthetic it had. I did learn, however, that a Wermacht platoon
  91. consists of 4 major squads, 2 support teams, and the platoon leader.
  92. In the case of Lauren's audience, I had gotten a 10 man squad, the
  93. mortar support team(3 man), and a platoon leader.
  94.
  95. I hope that the 80 column gives you some nostalgia for the past. I felt
  96. like it gives the best compatibility online, as ridiculous as that
  97. sounds.
