- Chapter 1
- Bring Forth the Unexpected
- Laurens Weiskopf
- The man stood nervous in front of the small crowd of soldiers.
- Yes, he had been tasked with creating a wunderwaffe for the southern
- to placate the command of that region. As time went on, however, the man
- could not help but place doubt upon the leadership of the commander. It
- was ultimately his rejection of a wunderwaffe which led to this very
- moment.
- "Now, gentlemen," he started off, his scratchy voice scraping their
- ear drums, met with little reaction. "I've called you here because I've
- been informed that you are the best of the best." He carefully examined
- the faces of each of the 14 men before him. Two squads, and their
- leader. "You are about to conduct a daring test, one which may very well
- completely upset the balance of this war."
- He looked behind him. His assistant, stoic as always, stood at the
- ready, the control panel unlit. Damn it, why didn't he just have the
- assistant take on the speech? One of the soldiers coughed, jolting him
- from his thoughts. "Ah, Tilman, if you would..."
- Tilman went over the procedure beautifully. Everything they had
- practiced for came to this moment, and Tilman refused to disappoint him.
- The panel lit up and the machine began to whir under its cover. He
- couldn't help but feel giddy. Everything he had worked for led to this
- exact moment.
- "G... Gentlemen, you will make history, in the face... Yes, face of
- your co... commander." He took a moment to steady his breathing, before
- continuing. "I trust you are aware of the situation. The British have
- set up an immense line of defense to the west of here. While your
- commander has an easy way to deal them for now, we should still keep
- them on their toes. I h-." He was abruptly stopped by an annoyed shout.
- "You woke all of us up at 3, 4 in the fucking morning for this shit?
- God damn it, just get on with it." The scientist swallowed a growing
- lump, slowly turning to face his captive audience. He recognized that
- voice, and those angry eyes piercing his skull. He quickly turned back,
- not wishing to face the wrath of the platoon leader.
- "Y... yes sir." He quickly made his way to the covers, tearing the
- sheet off to reveal the ominous blue glow. With a twirl, he turned to
- his audience, and threw the blanket away. "I have discovered the secret
- of teleportation! And you, gentlemen, shall be the first soldiers to
- demonstrate its tactical advantages!"
- There were murmur within the crowds. "Teleportation? What a farce."
- The murmurs continued as he strained his ears to listen in. While most
- seemed to consider it completely insane, and that the scientist had just
- gone mad, the same platoon commander who ridiculed him was now giving an
- approving nod. It seemed that he, of all people, could at least see the
- potential advantages.
- "Laurens, the machine's reporting unusual activity." He turned to
- Tilman, his face paled slightly. This couldn't be happening, not now!
- Years of research, a chance to prove everyone else wrong, and all
- screeching to a half NOW!?
- "What do you mean?" He kept his voice level. His panic shouldn't be
- shown. It can't be shown.
- "It looks like there's an unexepected power draw towards the
- designator module."
- "Is it within acceptable parameters?"
- There was a pregnant pause in the air, only interrupted by the
- breathing of those seated, and the sudden earpiercing pop coming from
- the machine. The signature grinding followed by a click could be heard
- as Tilman slammed the emergency power cutoff switch, but the machine
- simply began to loudly rattle as the hum grew more feverent. The
- previously calming blue turned to an ominious purple, before becoming a
- feverish red. Smoke poured out of its frontal grate.
- "Shit! Go," he urged the squads before him, "save yourselves!" They
- did not need to be told twice as they began to run out of the makeshift
- shack that contained his device, leaving their equipment behind in the
- process. He then turned to Tilman. "I'm going to try to save the device,
- get out of here!"
- Tilman hesitated, before nodding and heading for the door. Laurens
- instead grabbed the wrench underneath the podium-like panel, and
- scrambled over to the machine. He would not even get a chance to rest
- his wrench on the first bolt before a sudden thundering noise would roll
- across the desert.

- Lance Corporal Zac Burton
- There was nothing better than a good cup of tea in the morning.
- Zac took another sip of the still warm cup of tea. Thuds brought Zac to
- his left, where he saw his sergeant banging on the radio, the runner
- command had sent tinkering with a different radio next to him.
- "As I was saying, sir, all radios seem to not be working," the
- runner prattled on. "

- Chapter Notes
- I'm not a very good author, so apologies for the roughness of it all.
- I especially wish to apologize for the perspective shifts. I was more
- or less experimenting with this. I don't think I did very well though.
- I don't know much about military combat and organization, but I felt
- like I'd give it a shot, considering I really like WW2 and the general
- war time aesthetic it had. I did learn, however, that a Wermacht platoon
- consists of 4 major squads, 2 support teams, and the platoon leader.
- In the case of Lauren's audience, I had gotten a 10 man squad, the
- mortar support team(3 man), and a platoon leader.
- I hope that the 80 column gives you some nostalgia for the past. I felt
- like it gives the best compatibility online, as ridiculous as that
- sounds.
