- The Council of Venice guide to Mastodon, the Fediverse and the world of decentralized social network part 3
- (The camera clicks on showing a slender Japanese woman in glasses wearing a white military style uniform with a blue beret) Greetings agents! I am envoy Yuuko Shirakawa and I am here to be your guide to Mastodon, the Fediverse and the world of decentralized social networks. Now you have an account and know how to post, but now you want to add your new account to your phone or tablet. So you naturally want to know what apps are available. The first and most popular is the official Mastodon app, it supports both iOS and Android and has a layout like Twitters app. However, it only supports Mastodon based accounts (you cannot use your Pixelfed or Loops accounts) and only has the explore button and not the local and federated buttons that you can find on the web app, the Mastodon app is an excellent starter app if you’re interested in the Fediverse.
- The other major app that people use is Fedilab. Fedilab allows for multiple types of Fediverse, (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Loops, etc.) accounts and supports the local and federated buttons found on the web app, though it doesn’t have the explore button. However, unlike the official Mastodon app Fedilab is only available on Android though an iOS version is being developed, if you have multiple accounts in the Fediverse and use Android then Fedilab is probably right for you. If you want similar functionality to Fedilab but on iOS then you should try Ivory for Mastodon. Ivory is by the same team that wrote Tweetbot, it offers the same functionality as Fedilab plus more, it has a twitter like interface, but it only supports Mastodon accounts at the moment and unlike the other apps, this one does require a subscription. If you don’t mind paying a little and want to have a powerful Mastodon client for iOS then Ivory is the way to go. And because Mastodon and the Fediverse are open source, new client apps are being developed all the time, so if none of these apps seems right for you be sure to regularly search the Apple app store or Google play, you are bound to find one that is right for you.
- Before getting to your questions, I want to address what Threads.net is and how it fits into the Fediverse. Threads is a microblogging service operated by Meta. Like Mastodon Threads uses the ActivityPub protocols, so you can follow Threads accounts from any other Fediverse app. Unlike Mastodon though Threads uses Metas algorithms to display content and suggest follower, Threads also requires an Instagram account to use the service and features integration between the two platforms. As of recording this, Threads can enable experimental integration with the Fediverse, allowing user to follow and be followed by other users in the Fediverse but users outside of Threads can not reply to post made by Thread users. Because of Metas reputation (search for Embrace, extend, and extinguish for more information), most other servers in the wider Fediverse have a very, very, very strong mistrust of Threads and some may block it altogether. If you have a Threads account though and want to join the Fediverse simply go to your settings, account, and then Fediverse and click enable.
- Are there any questions?
- Girl from behind Camera: They didn’t submit any questions
- Yuuko: The Council spec say we need to have a questions and answer section though…So I guess do you have any question, Anna?
- Anna: Can you tell everyone about PeerTube? I think they will like PeerTube.
- Yuuko: PeerTube is a free and open source, decentralized, ActivityPub federated video platform, it’s the Fediverse answer to YouTube and can be followed from any other Fediverse account.
- Anna: Can you tell them about Funkwale?
- Yuuko: Funkwale is the Fediverse version of Spotify, it lets you share and access music using ActivityPub, Funkwale accounts can also be followed from any Fediverse account.
- Anna: Who is the better husbando Ichigo or Renji?
- Yuuko: Renji and it’s not even close.
- Anna: Can you explain why?
- Yuuko: Ichigo only has one attack.
- Anna: Why’s that bad
- Yuuko: That’s a question for your mom, sweety.
- Anna:…So is there a reason you and Doc aren’t married? I mean you have been living together forever and…
- Yuuko: And that’s all the time we have for questions! Thus Concludes the Council of Venice’s guide to Mastodon, the Fediverse and the world of decentralized social network!
