  1. "But with every word she was drawing further into herself, so he gave that up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible"
  2. As soon as Daisy finds out where Gatsby's wealth came from, she gives up on him and sees him as awful. ITS ALMOST LIKE THAT'S THE ONLY THING SHE REALLY GAVE A SHIT ABOUT. And it's most likely that this is because of his wealth, because Gatsby's wealth is literally the only thing Daisy gives a shit about or latches on to during their affair. Whether its his car, his house, or his clothes, she literally only cares about his money.
  3.
  4. "Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby.
  5. All she wants is to stay in her affair with Gatsby, but even she admits that asking her to admit that she loves Gatsby and not Tom is too much. If she really truly loved Gatsby, then she wouldn't have hesitated nearly as much and then eventually broke down, not being able to go through with what Gatsby wanted.
  6.
  7. "I did love him once- but I loved you too."
  8. Notice the past tense "loved". As in doesn't currently love. Now, granted, it does also say just before that she "loves him now", but as we'll get to later, Daisy is a dirty fucking liar who can't be taken at her word. You can't solely rely on Daisy's word as proof of her love.
  9.
  10. "Even that's a lie," said Tom savagely. "She didn't know you were alive. Why- there're things between Daisy and me that you'll never know, things that neither of us can ever forget."
  11. If Daisy didn't even know Gatsby was alive, how did she also still love Gatsby like he was still there? Even Tom says that this is a lie. This illustrates a big important point as to why the only flimsy piece of evidence that Daisy loves Gatsby literally doesn't matter; **Daisy is a dirty fucking lying skank.** Yeah, she says she loved Gatsby. But as Tom reveals, that's a complete fucking lie. This is the same woman who fucking betrays the person she supposedly loves the moment she realizes that the only she really cares about, his wealth, is based on a criminal enterprise.
  12.
  13. So essentially the only evidence that Daisy loves Gatsby is that Daisy says she does, which means absolutely jack shit coming from Daisy, a liar who has repeatedly lied (and if not lied, intentionally distorted the truth) since the inception of the book's plot.
  14.
  15. But if Daisy's word can't be taken as evidence, her actions definitely can. The first thing she notices when meeting with Tom and Gatsby is all of the nice things Gatsby owns (his house, clothes). Daisy only gives a shit about his money. Another pretty damning piece of evidence is that the first second of her getting into potential trouble, she conspires with Tom, in their house, to frame Gatsby. If she supposedly loved Gatsby, why the hell would she do this without thinking twice, and with TOM of all people?
  16.
  17. Although I don't doubt that she loved Gatsby at one point in time, it's absolutely ridiculous to assert that she still has strong feelings for someone who she thinks is dead, and when she finds out he's alive again and later meets him, the first thing she notices and latches on to is his wealth. And the second that Tom reveals that that wealth is dirty, she fucking zooms out of there and frames him for murder. She loves him soooo much that she doesn't even go to his funeral, leaving with Tom without giving anyone any notice. She doesn't even leave flowers or a card. That's how much she loved Gatsby (which is to say that she abso fucking lutely didnt).
  18.
  19. One point I would like to bring up is that she only went with Tom out of convenience and stability. Are we just gonna pretend that Gatsby is fucking loaded? Stability isn't remotely a concern with Gatsby, the man is loaded for days. So if Gatsby has both love and stability, why doesn't she go with Gatsby? The answer is: because she doesn't fucking love him.
