  26. A Christmas message arrives from Nomizu Iori, who plays Abukuma and Kinu!
  27. Regarding the Cover Illustration
  28. I never thought the day would come, when these two would adorn the front page!
  29. I'm really happy with just how cute they are getting along like that♪
  30. And Kinu... sure has grown... awesum...!!
  31. (Abukuma's fine as is!)
  32.
  33. Regarding Christmas
  34. Makes me think of Abukuma quietly munching away at cake with a happy look on her face,
  35. and Kinu devouring an "awesum turkey!" (laugh)
  36. Then one would see the other has cream on her cheek and go, "You've got something on your face,"
  37. and clean it off while...!
  38.
  39. To the Admirals
  40. This cover illustration makes a great Christmas present, doesn't it?♪
  41. (I hope you like my less than stellar drawing too...)
  42. Please continue to care for your Kinu and Abukuma this winter as you imagine spending Christmas with them!

  56. Strengthen the Fleet in preparation for Part 2!
  57. [Strait Medal planned to become a proper item after the event]
  58. The Fall event will soon end, but of course it was only Part 1. Will the fleet sent to Leyte finally break into the Gulf? Or will we be fighting from another angle entirely...? All we can do is speculate, but in any case an even fiercer battle may await us in the continuation event this winter, Part 2. Don't be overconfident, strengthen the fleet!

  79. Interrupting the KanColle Management Naval District in the middle of their Decisive Battle with Shou-Gou!
  80. This month with the KanColle Management Naval District
  81. with Comptiq's T-ko [Interviewer, I]
  82. and the Management Naval District's Tanaka [T]
  83. Next month's February issue (on sale 1/10) will be part 2 of our series on KanColle, with another cover and opening feature! I'll strive hard to drill myself on the latest info from the Management Naval District!
  84.
  85. Those fateful waters off Cape Engaño, and the main surface force charging in! The KanColle Management Naval District, with its upcoming fifth anniversary, and the Shou-Gou decisive battle!
  86. I: It's Comptiq! Thanks again, and good work!
  87. T: Thanks! It's gotten really cold, hasn't it? The signs of winter are everywhere now. Would you like something warm to drink?
  88. I: Hot cocoa, please!
  89. T: Sorry, we don't have any! How about this Shizuoka tea from a certain collab? It's delicious!
  90. I: Alright, I'll go with that! ...[Sniffle]. A breather! I haven't had one in a while, since I'm right in the middle of the fall event. I just opened the route to Surigao Strait in the Extra Op!
  91. T: Ohh. Just a little more to go! Good work. And thank you! I look forward to the First Striking Force, Third Section breaking its way through and the girls' achievements!
  92.
  93. I: The fall event, "Showdown at Operation Shou-Gou! The Battle of Leyte Gulf Counterattack (Part 1)", will be just about over by the time this issue of Comptiq is published, won't it? And the upcoming winter event will be Part 2!
  94. T: Yes. It'll be the final event of KanColle Phase 1, and will of course be entitled "Showdown at Operation Shou-Gou! The Battle of Leyte Gulf Counterattack (Part 2)". Preparations are already well underway.
  95. I: I'm trembling with excitement!
  96. T: The setting for the winter event will be Palawan Passage, the Sibuyan Sea, and... those fateful waters off Cape Engaño.
  97. I: It's finally time!
  98. T: That's right. The waters off Cape Engano, the final resting place of Japan's Mobile Force, where it faced a life or death struggle with a massive enemy task force. Furthermore, the main surface force will charge into Leyte Gulf to launch a counterattack on and attempt to destroy the enemy invasion force.
  99. I: The main force... the Kurita Fleet, then!
  100. T: That's right! We plan for the Ozawa Fleet and air cover from a fully developed land-based air corps to allow our main surface strike forces, composed primarily of the Kurita and Suzuki Fleets, to launch a massive counterattack.
  101. I: Can't wait!
  102. T: And of course, the Nishimura and Shima Fleets, which broke through Surigao Strait, will feature as well. We're looking forward to it as well!
  103.
  104. The Sibuyan Sea...? We have to get through!
  105. I: Getting fired up!
  106. T: We plan to depict the fierce battle fought by that battleship [Musashi] - the last battleship built and commissioned by the navy, who was wounded all over and became a shield for her allies' advance - and that aircraft carrier [Zuikaku] - who carried on the glory of CarDiv 1's name and fought with distinction through countless battlefields alongside her older sister. Many other ships also participated in what became the Combined Fleet's last and largest battle. The elite carrier task forces raised by the admirals, and the full force of the land-based air corps's firepower - despite it all, you'll face overwhelmingly large enemy fleets. Even so, the counterattack will be launched under strategic conditions that will bridge that gap in a titanic clash.
  107. I: Oohh!
  108. T: The medium/otsu and hard/kou difficulties will be suitably difficult, but veteran admirals will likely have Zuikaku's comrade to the bitter end from CarDiv 5, Shoukaku, alongside her. Deploying them together in carrier task forces will allow them to fight on par with that. And a little before next year's winter event in 2018, we plan for admirals without the second of the Yamato-class battleships to get a significant boost to the success rate of constructing her in LSC. Admirals without her, please plan your resource stockpiling accordingly. Of course, you will still be able to clear the winter event without her. Many ships participated in that operation. I think even the shipgirls you encounter relatively early on will perform more than adequately. I think it'd be great for everyone to use the fleets and shipgirls they've raised throughout Phase 1 of KanColle to take on the final, decisive battle, Shou-Gou.
  109. I: I'm raring to go!
  110.
  111. T: Before all that, we plan for the maintenance at the end of the fall event to include a Kai Ni remodel for a 5,500t light cruiser that played an active part in defending the north, before being transferred south as the war situation deteriorated and fighting in the Shou-Gou decisive battle at Leyte as part of the Ozawa Fleet. The remodel will allow you to obtain "Arctic Camouflage (+ Arctic Equipment)", which strengthens the defenses of certain vessels and improves all vessels' evasion in northern waters.
  112. I: Hohoh, a new type of equipment, eh? Will being unable to clear Leyte Part 1, the fall event, make part 2, the winter event, harder?
  113. T: No, it'll be alright. However, each Nishimura and Shima ship that fought hard and grew through the fall event will certainly remain powerful assets in Part 2 of Leyte.
  114. I: I see, that's a relief! Whew, even I got a little fired up hearing such a passionate deluge of game info. Tell me about what collabs you have in the works as well!
  115. T: Yeaah, we've got a lot of the kind of plans typical for us in the works... but I think we'll announce those next year, for the most part.
  116.
  117. Rice, umeboshi, seaweed, and tea! Food collabs, port and starboard, coming in fast!
  118. I: Come on, just a little something. Something fitting for "KanColle", something weird, anything!
  119. T: "Weird"... (laugh). Well, as is customary, we're in the midst of preparing a collab for next year with a well-established department store...
  120. I: Hm-hm.
  121. T: We have a multi-stage plan for next year, from February until our fifth anniversary... For February, we'll have chocolate for Valentine's. We also have plans for some pretty good clothes, top to bottom, for male admirals. Oh yes, the female admirals' apparel we were selling earlier was also quite popular, so we'll also preparing camisole, with several designs, and skirts.
  122. I: Eh? What'd you just say? Skirts?
  123. T: Yes, miniskirts. Wonderful marine skirts for everyday use are in the works as well, for female KanColle admirals.
  124. I: "Marine"...? Man, I wanna see that! The approaches... they sure are endless.
  125. I: It'd be great if it does well. There's also something more like me that we're eagerly preparing, some Japanese cuisine... food, that is...
  126. I: Hmhm.
  127. T: KanColle collaborative... rice. Umeboshi. Seaweed. And Japanese tea. The last time we did tea it was pretty popular, so. Oh, and that's what you're drinking right now.
  128. I: What? Rice, umeboshi, seaweed? The heck for?
  129. T: Just hear me out, it's delicious~ The tea's good, right? Warming you up?
  130. I: Well, yeah, but...!
  131. T: Also, we have the wonderful and popular sake in the works this time as well. We should be able to announce this all one by one after the new year.
  132. I: It was pretty good last time! But can you do shochu too!?
  133. T: Shochu with hot water [oyuwari] is good for your health, but so's cold water [miyuwari]~! For those long nights in the fall and winter! Oh yeah, from late fall through winter, KanColle Arcade will be having its Fourth Event: "Recon Seaplanes, Launching!" I hope everyone enjoys the wonderful Abyssals and the exciting anti-air cut-in of the arcade!
  134.
  135. I: Yeah, it really is incredible. The shipgirls are cute, but Remote Island Demon's great too!
  136. T: Harbor Princess is great too! Their expressions are indescribable. And when their whole body gets pounded with Type 3 shells! Of course, they weren't nearly this effective in real life, but fans of the Type 3 shell should definitely try to fire the volley of their dreams. Almost makes me tear up... Oh, looks like I've got some sand in my eyes.
  137. I: I don't think there's many fans...
  138. T: Ah, sorry, got a little excited there. There's also the KanColle Management Naval District Official 2018 Calendar coming out this winter as well. You can see a side to the shipgirls you don't really see in the game - well, I guess you do, nowadays? Anyhow, please enjoy experiencing daily life through the four seasons with your shipgirls with the calendar!
  139.
  140. I: Oh, this is great!
  141. T: Hey, that's my line!
  142. I: We plan on an extraordinary commercial for the calendar starting toward the end of this year, in a collaboration with our own editorial department. It seemed like lots of fun, so we're providing covering fire- oh shoot, we're way overtime! Well then, that's it for today. I'll be heading back to report to the editor-in-chief and get my Nishimura Fleet through Surigao Strait! We'll beat December too! Have a Happy New Year!

  148. KanColle Seiyuu Bulletin: Miyakawa Wakana
  149. An interview with Miyakawa Wakana, seiyuu of Destroyer Division 8's Asashio, Ooshio, Michishio, and Michishio [sic: read Arashio]. We asked for her thoughts, as a woman who has been involved with KanColle since service began, on shipgirls, the product, and more!
  150.
  151. Portraying the shipgirls with empathy for their backgrounds
  152. Interviewer (I): Miyakawa-san, you've acted for KanColle since the very beginning, five years ago. What kind of thoughts do you have on it, having done so many shipgirls?
  153. Miyakawa (M): This year'll be the fifth since I received the offer to work on KanColle. From the beginning, I always looked over the history of the shipgirls I performed. I would think things like, "I'm sure Michishio's protesting attitude comes from an event in her history" as I acted. It was a lot of fun, and the more I learned about shipgirls the more beloved they became to me.
  154.
  155. I: Miyakawa-san, a fair number of your shipgirls have Kai Ni. How does that moment their Kai Ni are implemented feel?
  156. M: It sort of feels like a mother watching her children as they grow up. Especially with the destroyer girls, their graphics and lines start to leave a more adult impression, making that feeling all the stronger.
  157.
  158. I: Who do you think especially changed with her Kai Ni?
  159. M: All the destroyer girls change like that, but I think Michishio stands out. You might say she's less tough, and that, despite the boldness you can see in her proud pose, she's smiling and her attitude's softened a bit. Kasumi herself became a little gentler with her Kai Ni, but I think Michishio's case is a bit different from hers. Kasumi's "tsun" was always about her conversation partner, but Michishio's stemmed from low self-esteem, perhaps, or that she's a little too aggressive because she has something she has to protect, so she's all "tsuntsun" to those around her. I think with her Kai Ni, Michishio has definitely overcome what weighed her down, which I find really heartwarming.
  160.
  161. I: Michishio, of course, is a member of the Nishimura Fleet featuring in the fall event, "Showdown at Operation Shou-Gou! The Battle of Leyte Gulf Counterattack (Part 1)". How did you feel about the fall event?
  162. M: I played it myself, of course, but I love to watch others play as well, so I watched many playthroughs. Everyone had such an intense passion for the Nishimura Fleet as they played! In history, Michishio was abandoned during the Battle of Leyte Gulf and sank alone... but seeing the seven members of the Nishimura Fleet assembled and fighting had me on the verge of tears.
  163.
  164. I: Destroyer Division 8 and Nishimura Fleet quest lines were added in October. Please tell us how those felt during recording.
  165. M: Ordinary lines are almost exclusively meant to be directed toward the Admiral, so it was quite a new experience recording a conversation between shipgirl comrades. For Destroyer Division 8 it was really heartwarming seeing the relationships between Asashio-class sisters, and for the Nishimura Fleet it was refreshing seeing the always-tsuntsun Michishio show a surprising amount of concern for Shigure. I myself really want to see more exchanges between shipgirl comrades.
  166.
  167. I: Besides those lines, what other recordings left a lasting impression on you?
  168. M: I really love Arashio's MVP line. That line, "The goddess of victory is right here~ Hurry up and catch me~!", makes me think, "What's this girl doing, calling herself the 'goddess of victory'!" - it's really cute. Asashio's rainy seasonal seasonal too. Saying "Shall we start a teruteru bozu-making mission?" during rainy season totally fits Asashio's serious attitude.
  169.
  170. I: We also had Michishio Kai Ni's voice for the TV commercial for this issue's Comptiq. Please tell us how you felt about doing that narration as well.
  171. M: Michishio was the last member of Destroyer Division 8 to get her Kai Ni. I think Michishio was anxiously wondering when she would get her Kai Ni, so I found it deeply moving to do my first commercial narration as her. It was my first time in an announcer role as a shipgirl, so for myself it was something I looked forward to give it a shot.
  172.
  173. I: Incidentally, what shipgirls do you like, besides the ones you perform?
  174. M: The one I like the most is actually Asashimo! Her appearance, personality, and voice all struck me. I've actually got a thing for silver hair, so I also like Kashima, and basically the rest of the silver-haired shipgirls. Recently, my dream has been to form an all-silver hair fleet. I like Kiyoshimo and the other girls in the Rei-gou group as well. I've heard that Kasumi Kai Ni just got a new figure, so I totally want to assemble the figures for all of them now (Editor's note: the Kasumi Kai Ni figure will be a Sega prize figure released the week of December 5th).
  175.
  176. I: If you have another opportunity in the future, what kind of shipgirl would you like to portray?
  177. M: I'm really thankful I was given the chance to act for eight shipgirls, but if I get another opportunity, I'd like to take the chance to do a type of girl I haven't done yet. There aren't that many boyish shipgirls like Mogami either if you think about it, so I'd love to try that. Even better if she had silver hair! (laugh)
  178.
  179. I: I hope you do get a chance to do a silver-haired girl! Lastly, do you have a message for the Comptiq readers?
  180. M: KanColle is already plunging through its fifth year, but I'm really happy that a single work captivated hearts for so long. It's thanks to the support of all the Admirals that it's continued for this long. It's really encouraging for me hearing people talk about KanColle. I'd love to continue to express my thanks to all the Admirals by continuing to perform, and for us all to walk onward together. Thank you for your continued support!
  181.
  182. Trying out Commercial Narration! Michishio introduces Comptiq!
  183. It feels like it's not just Michishio but all the Asashio sisters trying their best!
  184. As my first time ever doing a commercial voice-over, I was really nervous. But I grinned from ear to ear imagining the Asashio sisters watching over Micishio from behind and tried my hardest (laugh). It was a lot of fun!
  185. - Miyakawa Wakana
  186.
  187. Miyakawa Wakana's Shipgirl Roles
  188. First of the Asashio-class, Asashio
  189. A solemn girl with a strong sense of responsibility. I tried to convey that she faces her duty to fight the Abyssals head-on and puts her complete trust in the Admiral. While she might be a little too serious, that's sorta cute too.
  190.
  191. Second of the Asashio-class, Ooshio
  192. Obviously her smile is cute and she's an energetic girl. She never says anything negative and is in all likelihood the life of the party among the sisters, sort of like a spiritual support. Acting out Ooshio gets even me pumped up.
  193.
  194. Third of the Asashio-class, Michishio
  195. At first she was all tsuntsun and no dere, but I somehow got the sense that wasn't her true self. Various lines reveal how she is actually sensitive, making her a girl I want to protect.
  196.
  197. Fourth of the Asashio-class, Arashio
  198. An always smiling and polite, yet somehow aloof girl. Despite being fourth ship, she's mentally the most like an elder sister. Whether it's cause she seems to watch her sisters from above, or that she's watching from an angle, it feels like she's watching over everyone.
  199.
  200. Ninth of the Asashio-class, Arare
  201. At first glance Arare appears frail, as if she would break if you touched her, but she has a strong heart, and her "ncha" reveals a surprisingly playful side to her. I think she's the most mysterious and enigmatic of the girls I perform.
  202.
  203. Tenth of the Asashio-class, Kasumi
  204. While she seems extremely tsuntsun, Kasumi's tsun stems less from her own anger and more out of a strong concern for her conversation partner. While it seems rough, I think it's a meaningful part of what makes Kasumi cute.
  205.
  206. First of the Chitose-class, Chitose
  207. Her archetype is "an older sister who loves sake", so at first I acted her out as this total drunk. I was told I was overdoing it (laugh). I toned it down a bit. I have many lasting memories of recording her.
  208.
  209. Second of the Chitose-class, Chiyoda
  210. She loves her older sister Chitose, something that comes through keenly. While it seems she might consider Chitose even more important than the Admiral, I definitely don't think she dislikes him, but rather that she's the type of young lady to quietly harbor warm feelings toward him.
  211.
