  1. Greg Malivuk
  2. http://www.pastebin.com/u/gmalivuk - notes from all classes
  3. ---
  4. 1 PRO opening statement - 10 minutes to prepare your opening statement (What is your position? What are the strongest reasons for holding that position?)
  5. 2 Cross-examination (1 person from each team) - 3 minutes to prepare, CON team identify the weakest points in the PRO opening statement and decide how best to criticize them. PRO team anticipate the weaknesses they’ll point out, and how you can defend those points from their criticism
  6. 3 CON opening statement
  7. 4 Cross-examination (1 person from each team)
  8. 5 PRO closing
  9. 6 CON closing
  10. ---
  11. - PRO opening statement had too many reasons, many without any specific data to back it up
  12. (This made it much harder to respond to criticism in the cross-examination phase)
  13. - “If I were a teacher” is a bad argument when there is a teacher on the other team. (Don’t argue from hypothetical personal experience if someone else really has that experience.)
  14. ---
  15. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/02/cheating_in_college_has_become.html - “The survey [of 300 college students] found...72 percent indicated that they had used their phone, tablet or computer to cheat in class.”
  16.
  17. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/07/180728083617.htm - This article describes how device use in class reduces exam scores even for students who didn’t themselves use devices. If the PRO team had found this article, it would have been a strong criticism of the CON “Students who use cell phones are punishing themselves” argument.
  18.
  19. http://boston1775.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-myth-of-students-today-depend-on.html - The “Students today depend on paper too much” quote is fake, and was probably invented in the 1970s.
