- It looked as if her lover, who was laid upon the cart, had been burnt at the stake: his feet, legs, thighs and belly were all burnt; and the flames had attacked him above the waist, too: he was black and charred all over. She’d taken him to every one of his kin, but her grief was unrelieved: none of them dared attempt to avenge him – they knew they’d not succeed. She was riding backwards, facing the cart, and had vowed she’d eat no meat and drink no wine, and would continue to wear her clothes inside-out, till she had revenge upon the one who feared and dreaded no one and had killed her love, now blacker than a Moor: everywhere the fire had reached it had charred and blackened him.
