  2. #### Hope was a dreadful thing. It alone kept me coming back to the shore, waiting and watching. An endless cycle of hope that would die in the dusk of darkness only to be renewed with the coming dawn. 
  3. The shores of Kapsali were nothing shy of beautiful—the very epitome of an island treasure with its pristine beaches, white pebble-stone buildings, and the constant music of crashing waves. Whereas, we were the pirates; collecting and hoarding its exquisiteness for ourselves. Few people knew of the Greek gem that we called home, which made life on the island all the better for us locals because we didn’t have to cater to the whims of tourists. 
  4. Unfortunately, even though its beauty was unparalleled in our eyes, the isle was too small to provide for all those who lived here. Hence the occasional trips to the mainland to stock up on supplies. Short trips. Simple trips. Trips that should take only a few days at most. Instead…
  5. Weeks passed.
  6. And every-morning, I came back to the shores and waited, refusing to accept in my head what my heart knew to be true. I waited for my parent’s return. Alone. While I hoped and waited to be wrapped up in the embrace of my mom and dad as they laughingly told me of their spontaneous adventure and apologized for leaving me to worry, everyone else waited for their corpses to wash ashore.  
  7. And finally, they did. 
  8. One morning before dawn, in the peaceful quiet, the authorities arrived with the truth that could no longer be denied. Death came knocking, and I learned suddenly how cruel he could be. I was alone.
