  1. [23:44:41] <Kain_> Would she have investigated before or after?
  2. [23:44:42] <Kain_> Up to you
  3. [23:45:39] <Kain_> One of the residents in the open bar zoo has caught your eye. The cages are sort of like the ones they keep the animals in at ciruses, cage wagons that can be transported easily. But in any case, one of the occupants of such a cage is a little green hermit, sitting in a dark corner of his cage and huddled in his robes. A lantern sits next to him, quietly, not lit.
  4. [23:45:40] <Amaryllis> Hmmm, whichever allowed her to be more discreet about it.
  5. [23:47:23] <Amaryllis> (let's say after, for the sake of continuity. It caught her eye on the way out of Walt's and she came back alone later to visit it)
  6. [23:47:35] <Amaryllis> (because she obviously couldn't do anything right then and there)
  7. [23:49:05] : Amaryllis returns to the tonberry cage after the party had their talk in the inn. With Celina still out cold, it seemed pretty assured that they'd be here at least a LITTLE longer, right? She kneels down in front of the cage, her own lantern dangling in her hand.
  8. [23:51:09] <Kain_> The tonberry doesn't even look over. "Go away, human." it sighs in a raspy voice that sounds like a quiet wind brushing through tree limbs.
  9. [23:51:16] <Amaryllis> For the moment she's just staring in the cage, a hint of a forlorn look in her eyes, mixed with eagerness and curiosity.
  10. [23:52:20] <Kain_> Its eyes don't glow as brightly as you would expect, and its expression seems quite forlorn, itself. It stares at the floor of its cage unflinchingly.
  11. [23:53:34] <Amaryllis> Her hand moves to her bag and she shifts things around a bit until her knife is near the top, its glint just barely visible from outside the bag. Her own eyes glow softly for a second. She pauses to allow it to react.
  12. [23:54:03] <Kain_> It looks over. "An imitator. How quaint."
  13. [23:54:55] <Amaryllis> "Is that what you think?" Ammy sighs. "It is unfortunate the world has written your last days so, and my very existence may be to blame. I am sorry."
  14. [23:57:00] <Kain_> "The only thing you need apologize for to me is for bothering me, human." it says with slight annoyance. "Finish your gawking and then leave. I do not like being disturbed."
  15. [23:57:06] <Kain_> (Oops)
  16. [23:57:11] <Kain_> (Reverse the italics on that)
  17. [23:57:17] <Amaryllis> (I can't see itallics on here)
  18. [23:59:31] : Amaryllis flicks her wrist and tries to light a mote of fire in the tonberry's lantern. (improvised magic okay?) "The others at Ipsen's Castle instinctively knew what I am, or at least sensed enough of it to show no hostility when I visited. Perhaps you are too weakened by your predicament to do the same?"
  19. Session Time: Mon Sep 10 00:00:00 2012
  20. [00:00:24] <Kain_> (Also oops)
  21. [00:00:45] <Kain_> (Pretend it extended its s's like hissing)
  22. [00:01:41] <Amaryllis> (okie dokie)
  23. [00:01:59] <Kain_> The tonberry looks over and snatches his lantern. "Do not touch thissssss. There issss sssssomething different about you, yessss, but you are ssssstill jusssssst a human, are you not?"
  24. [00:02:48] <Amaryllis> "I was, once. That was nearly half of my entire life ago."
  25. [00:03:22] <Kain_> "Then what are you." it says, its eyes narrowing.
  26. [00:04:44] : Amaryllis takes care to make sure no one is listening in before she proceeds, in a rough whisper. "Now, I am becoming you, all of you. Your tales, your myth and legend, all of it was brought out of the crystal with me as my soul was ripped from death and returned to this world."
  27. [00:04:54] <Amaryllis> "Our tales and legend now."
  28. [00:06:58] <Kain_> "Godbeassst.... eidolon." it says, simply.
  29. [00:07:14] : Amaryllis nods back. "So it is now written."
  30. [00:08:07] <Kain_> Its face shrivels a bit in disgust. "How can you carry our tale when you know sssssso little of usss to begin with?"
  31. [00:09:38] <Amaryllis> "I know every tale of our kind there is to know."
  32. [00:09:55] <Kain_> "Then tell me why you carry the lantern. Why you wield the knife."
  33. [00:12:35] <Amaryllis> "Because it is so written, the world has chosen a role for me, and I play it dutifully. Oft times I find myself overcome by a sensation or memory of the tales, and it guides my hand to wield the knife. The reasoning varies, as it does in the tales, but always the feeling is drawn from the same source." Ammy begins to look more and more disquieted as she recounts this.
  34. [00:14:01] <Amaryllis> "Perhaps you should resent me, because it is not by choice that I carry this mantle. Perhaps you should resent me because I cannot...yet choose, and I am guided by the hand that writes such tales into existence."
  35. [00:14:46] <Kain_> The tonberry is disgusted. "You do not even know. You blindly follow the talessssss that comprissse you. You call yourssssself not human, but you are not tonberry either. You are falssse. Until you know the truth, you are nothing."
  36. [00:15:05] <Kain_> "I deny you, godbeassst, until you honor our waysss asss they were meant to be."
  37. [00:16:25] <Kain_> You feel sticken for a moment, weak for a few seconds as if you almost lost the strength to stand. But it fades quickly.
  38. [00:17:27] <Amaryllis> "Nnnrgh..." Ammy nearly faceplants but steadies herself with a one hand on the ground. She lifts her head with a determined glow in her eyes. "In any case, 'when faced with reality, myth oft fades away'. But yet I persist, and my tale grows stronger even as the walking tonberries of the world grow weaker and fade away. How am I to learn if I do not seek you out now, while your lanterns yet glow?"
  39. [00:18:17] <Kain_> "You sssseeek an easy path. There issss no ssssuch thing for our kind."
  40. [00:19:22] <Kain_> "Return to me when you can ansssssswer my two quessssstionssss. Do not call yourssssself tonberry before."
  41. [00:20:38] <Amaryllis> "Then teach me." Ammy starts to reach for her journal but thinks better of it, instead shifting closer to sit cross-legged in front of the cage. "What is your name? And where do I begin when the act of murder still drives me to dip into the cleansing dullness of firewater?"
  42. [00:22:57] <Kain_> "I am Kni'lisssss. And murder is what we loathe most."
  43. [00:24:15] <Amaryllis> "Kni'lis. I shall not forget that name. Please, go on."
  44. [00:24:56] <Amaryllis> “Call me Amaryllis then, if you do not find it suitable to call me eidolon.”
  45. [00:25:38] <Kain_> "What liesssss people have sssspread of ussss. Even if we all perisssh, we would not want a falssse tale for all to remember ussss by."
  46. [00:27:41] <Kain_> "Very well, Am'rylisss. I could anssswer all of your quessssstionsss about our kind, including thosssse I asssk of you. But knowing OF our people will not let you KNOW our people. You musssst partake on a pilgrimage to where the Tonberriessss once lived."
  47. [00:27:42] <Amaryllis> “The truth of a tale is only one part of its power, and only one part of its value as well.” Ammy takes a deep breath. “However, I am told that the strong write their own tales, unbelievable as that seems to me. Perhaps there is some truth to it, and if that is so...”
  48. [00:29:06] <Amaryllis> (would Ammy have any idea where that would be?)
  49. [00:29:28] <Kain_> Not a clue. Though Ipsen's Castle might be a good place to start if you don't wish to ask.
  50. [00:29:57] <Kain_> "Walk the pathssss we have walked, let the light guide your footssstepss. If you are worthy you will find the way. And then you will know what it meansss to be Tonberry."
  51. [00:31:25] <Amaryllis> “This is not a place you will be telling me of yourself then.” Ammy puts away a half-unfolded map. “Very well, I know how tales are written and the trials set forth for one such as myself.”
  52. [00:33:34] <Kain_> The tonberry remains quiet.
  53. [00:34:57] <Amaryllis> “One last request. Every book of stories begins with a single tale. If I am to rewrite the stories of tonberry, then, may I ask for your own tale?”
  54. [00:36:09] <Amaryllis> “Everyone has a story to tell, and there are many I am already charged to preserve, whether of my own desire or that of the story’s bearer.” Ammy takes out her journal.
  55. [00:39:45] <Kain_> Kni'lis: "I once walked with my brotherssss and sistersss in the Losst Sssanctuary. I wasss peacekeeper, and would weigh karma in a dissspute. One night, my daughter did not return from her walksss in the darknessss. I pursssued, in vain, for sssshe was in the belly of a behemoth. I ssssssslew the creature and cut open itssss belly, before giving her lasssst rites. It wassss then the merchent
  56. [00:39:45] <Kain_> found me. Ssssince I had ssssslain hisss prey, he claimed me inssstead."
  57. [00:42:21] : Amaryllis dutifully records it in her journal and nods. “Everyone has one tale to tell, however short or long, that defines their existence in this world, marks the world indelibly in their name. I will make sure yours is not forgotten. I have neither strength nor coin to free you from here, so this is all I can offer for now.”
  58. [00:43:10] : Amaryllis slowly stands up, testing her strength from the strange feeling before.
  59. [00:43:18] <Kain_> "Very well. Go, and do not disssshonor our memory, Am'rylisss. The fallen dessserve more."
  60. [00:43:37] <Kain_> You seem to have recovered your strength.
  61. [00:44:22] <Amaryllis> “And they shall see it.” Amaryllis puts away her journal and picks up her lantern, slowly walking off back toward the inn.
