- There are three common problems people have with English consonant sounds.
- 1 voiced vs. voiceless: beach/peach, buzz/bus
- 2 manner (how the air goes through): boat/both, copy/coffee
- 3 place (where the sound is produced): free/three, file/fire
- ---
- The typical problem with manner is the difference between stops (that stop the air completely) and fricatives (that let the air through a smaller space)
- p. 149 exercise 3A - Which word is said?
- You need to copy the coffee.
- The coffee machine is broken. / The copy machine is broken.
- ---
- The most common problem in this set is /ð/ vs. /d/ and /θ/ vs /t/ (the ‘th’ sounds)
- How dare you go there?
- I see three (free) trees.
- In a mirror, you should see the tip of your tongue for /ð/ and /θ/, but not for /d/ or /t/.
- You should also be able to continue the sound a long time for /ð/ and /θ/.
- p. 151 - for /d/ and /t/, [10] touches [5]
- - for /ð/ and /θ/, [10] almost touches [4] and is between [4] and [9] (Your tongue touches [9], but air needs to pass above it so it doesn’t completely touch [4].)
- ---
- Another common manner of articulation problem is between fricatives and affricates (which are the same sound but begin with a stop).
- /ʃ/ and /ʒ/ vs. /ʧ/ and /ʤ/
- “ship” vs “chip”
- “t-shirts” vs “teachers”
- Cheap sheep chew shoes and the teacher’s T-shirts.
- leisure / ledger
- They left a message about the massage appointment.
- Jacques is a jock.
- The major measured it.
- ---
- p. 150 exercise 4 - Repeat these words.
- Which witch’s wish do you want first?
- ---
- exercise 5A - give the correct response to what you hear (first I say them, then you say them, then your partner says them)
- ---
- They thankfully think this thing is the best thing that they can throw the three times they need to throw a thing.
- The wind went right through three free light fleeces.
- The lead-lined red line ran along really rural parallel roads.
- - If you know you have difficulty with a particular sound or combination of sound, force yourself to learn and say sentences like these in order to practice those sounds.
