  2. | Using The "--luadebug" Launch Option with Racing+ |
  3. +---------------------------------------------------+
  4.
  5. The Racing+ mod uses a network socket to talk to the Racing+ client. However, by default, the game prevents you from using any network sockets for security purposes. To get around this, you must add a special launch option to the game called "--luadebug".

  8. | Steps to Add The "--luadebug" Launch Option |
  9. +---------------------------------------------+
  10.
  11. 1) Open the game.
  12. 2) Disable any mods that you do not fully trust and not have fully vetted for malicious code.
  13. 3) Close the game
  14. 3) Open Steam.
  15. 4) Click on "Library" at the top of the Steam window.
  16. 5) On the left side, you will see a listing of all of your games. Right click on "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth" and select "Properties".
  17. 6) The "General" tab will be open by default. Click on the "Set Launch Options..." button.
  18. 7) Enter in "--luadebug" and click the "OK" button.
  19. 8) That's it! Now launch the game.

  24.
  25. Q: What exactly does the "--luadebug" launch option do?
  26. A: Normally, mods do not have access to files on your computer or the ability to communicate over the network. This setting turns off that restriction.
  27.
  28. Q: Why does the Racing+ mod need access to the files on my computer?
  29. A: It doesn't. The Racing+ mod does not access any files on your computer. But "--luadebug" has to be enabled in order to enable network communication.
  30.
  31. Q: Why does the Racing+ mod need the ability to communicate over the network?
  32. A: In a race without shadows, network communication is done like this:
  33.
  34. Racing+ Mod (Lua) <-- (save1.dat) ---> Racing+ Client (Desktop application) <-- (WebSocket connection) --> Racing+ Server (isaacracing.net)
  35.
  36. With shadows, the Racing+ Mod needs to directly talk to the server, because it is so much faster:
  37.
  38. Racing+ Mod (Lua) <-- (UDP) ---> Racing+ Server (isaacracing.net)
  39.
  40. Q: Will entering the "--luadebug" launch option make my computer more insecure?
  41. A: Yes and no. In theory, an Isaac mod could perform malicious actions like uploading files from your computer to the internet, installing a keylogger, and so forth. These kinds of malicious mod would ONLY work if you had the "--luadebug" launch option set. So, by setting this flag, you make your computer more vulnerable. However, note that if you have the Racing+ client installed and you only use the Racing+ mod, then the "--luadebug" launch option does not make your computer more insecure, because the Racing+ client has access to all of the files on your computer anyway - it doesn't need to go through the mod to do this. Obviously, regardless of whether you use the Racing+ client or the Racing+ mod, you must implicitly trust the authors to not insert malicious code. (Of course, this applies for ANY software that you install or run on your computer, not just Racing+.)
  42.
  43. Q: Should I run other mods other than Racing+ with the "--luadebug" option set?
  44. A: No! When you have this launch option set, do NOT use any mods that you do not fully trust. If you must use another mod, then either turn off the "--luadebug" option or manually vet the code for the mod. (Since Lua code is in "plain text", so you can open mod files in Notepad and search for messed-up things, like "io" calls.)
