- Step counter: a counter that increases while you're moving. Nominally it increases by 1 per frame, so 60 per second. However, many areas have a higher or lower step counter rate. For instance, Sky Waves have a rate of 1.5, meaning the step counter increases by 1.5 per frame, or 90 per second. (Note: internally the step counter is stored x10, e.g. 1.5 is stored as 15.)
- Some maps have G virus spots; these are spots where G viruses are guaranteed to appear. When you walk around in a G virus spot, your step counter increases more slowly than in the rest of the map. Note: for Alt. Echo Ridge and Alt. Messie's Cove, the G virus spots are still present, but no G viruses are defined for them.
- An encounter check occurs when the step counter equals or exceeds a threshold. For the first encounter check, the threshold is 250 and increases by 10 for every failed encounter check. The base encounter rate is 6% and increases by 1% for every failed check, up to 100%. If your step counter happens to exceed multiple new thresholds, a separate encounter check is performed for every threshold. When an encounter check passes, a random battle is selected.
- The step counter and encounter rate reset after each battle, when you pulse in/out, when you move to another map, or when an encounter check passes - including when Cloaker negates a passed encounter check.
