While he was still looking for the red quarry, he came face to face with Huti the grizzly bear.

The bear sat upon his haunches and showed his teeth in a wicked grin. "Ho, man creature!" said the bear. "I am very glad to see you. This morning I had the hiccoughs; therefore I knew I should soon find fresh meat to eat."

"Do you intend to tear my flesh?" asked the boy.

"Indeed yes," said Huti licking his chops.

"Do not try to do so," said the Stone Boy, "and I will furnish you good meat from the hunting."

"Ahhguhr!" growled the bear. "I am too hungry to wait for your hunting." Huti seized the boy with his long forearms, but when he thought to close his jaws upon tender flesh he ground his teeth upon a stone and broke them. He shrank back in amazement to see only a black stone where the boy had been. Suddenly the boy leaped from the stone and fell upon the grass, shouting and kicking his heels with laughter.

The grizzly again seized the lad in a rage and broke all his teeth grinding upon a stone. "Now it is my turn," said the Stone Boy as Huti retired in pain and amazement. The boy fitted an arrow to his bow and shot the bear. He killed the grizzly and passed on.
