- "I know you, Red Sonja of Hyrkania!" Kus gurgled the blood still in his throat. "You have fought sorcery and demons aforetime, and now you dare to fight me. You sought to protect yourself with witchcraft —I can feel it upon you even now. Did you cast some feeble spell, Red Witch, thinking you could evade me? Ha-ha-ha! Your magic hid you briefly, and even warded off the vampire-sleep I sent forth when I found you earlier this night-but now you are mine. You shall fight sorcery no longer, for sorcery has overcome you; you shall slay no more demons, for now you shall yourself become one! You shall hunger for the blood, hide from the daylight, slumber in coffins and perform the rites to Semrog and Ordru. Fall to your knees!"
- Sonja raised her sword— and instantly it felt heavier than a mountain in her hand. Kus' eyes glared, and Sonja felt yellow flames bursting within her brain, dancing behind her eyes, commanding her. The immense weight of her sword pulled her down.
- She dropped to her knees.
- "Crawl!" Kus commanded, baring his teeth with great glee. "Crawl! Crawl to me and beg for my hungry kiss. CrawlIl!! Red Sonja!"
- She wavered. She dropped her sword. Her head floated to the right, to the left, backwards, forward-floating... Cascading music filled her mind. Visions of childhood engulfed her-visions of her mother and father, their security-and she saw it all returned to Kus, who promised her the sweet repose of childhood, wonderful moonlight and warm earth, unending dreams and scarlet rivers to slake her thirst...
- She crawled. Her bare knees scraped on the wooden floor, bumped against Chost and his companions. Sonja crawled over them, staring up at Kus, whose height continued to grow, whose yellow eyes continued to burn and beckon like two torches leading her homeward from the depths of a lonely forest.
- Home ... Kus…
- "Come, Sonja, yes... come…”
- Yet even as her skin flushed, as her arms grew weighted and her brain danced with visions, she felt an instinct—a growl in her soul something deep, primordial and human from a time when humans were their true barbaric selves a whisper that denied Kus....
- "Come, Sonja…”
- A voice, that denied Kus...
- "Yes. .. come, Sonja. Crawl..."
- A mental scream, a savage release that denied Kus…
- "Yes, yes, come, now I will reward you...”
- No!
- "I am here." He bent over her. "You love me, Sonja." His yellow eyes washed their light down over her face. "I am everything, Sonja."
- His rank breath blasted her cheek.
- "No-oho-ohhh!"
- Her desperation, her horror, her scream born of primordial fear, pushed her back. Kus laughed and reached for her—
- And Sonja, seeing herself as in a dream, drove both hands into her belt-pouch, withdrew the talisman-Kus' eyes whitened.
- Sonja struggled to rise, to stand up. She rocked on trembling feet-and Kus backed away. She threw up her hands, the talisman glowing whitely in them-and Kus screamed Sonja threw herself forward with all her dimming strength. The talisman struck Kus full on the chest. The white glow seemed to fill him; a white smoke blew up and there was a burning, hissing sound. Kus shrieked and threw himself back.
- Then black mist filled the room, clouding the window. The vampire was changing form, dissolving, retreating. Sonja fell forward, clinging to the talisman as if to her soul, her life.
