<p style="text-align:left;">Earth Day Network—the international coordinator of Earth Day—is working every day to build the world’s largest coalition of people united to ensure a healthy planet. Working year-round with more than 50,000 partner organizations in 192 countries, our global campaigns bring hundreds of thousands of new voices—representing youth and faculty, the faith community, minority groups, women, teachers, students and others—into the environmental movement.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">The first <a href="https://www.earthday.org/about/the-history-of-earth-day/">Earth Day in 1970</a> brought together 20 million people from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. We are continuing that momentum right now.</p>


<p style="text-align:left;">Today, we know that many people — from world leaders to ordinary citizens — are indifferent to the truth about the critical state of our planet, some deny that climate change is real and disregarding scientific evidence, some ignore pressing global challenges that place at risk the health and welfare of all people, especially the most vulnerable amongst us.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">On Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary in 2020, we will change all that. We will connect three billion people and engage at least half the planet in collective action to create a sustainable future. </p>

<p style="text-align:left;">With the success of the first Earth Day as our guide, we will make April 22, 2020 a genuine inflection point in the survival of human life on Earth. Help us design the vision, roadmap and strategies to realize this outcome for Earth Day 2020! </p>

<strong> Earth Day's 2016 theme was Trees for the Earth.</strong> That year we set the ambitious goal of planting 7.8 billion trees – one for every person on the planet – by Earth Day 2020. <a href="https://www.earthday.org/campaigns/reforestation/nominate-reforestation-project/">We are working towards that goal today!</a></p>

<strong> Earth Day’s 2017 theme was Environmental and Climate Literacy.</strong> Before we can solve the dire environmental threats facing us in the 21st century, we must build a global citizenry fluent in environmental issues. <a href="https://www.earthday.org/campaigns/education/global-environmental-climate-literacy-campaign/">Our commitment is for every student to be climate literate. </a></p>

<strong> Earth Day’s 2018 theme is Bags, Bottles and Straws: Building a Single-Use-Plastics Free World.</strong> From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of single use plastics is a leading threat to the health and well-being of our planet. In response, Earth Day Network is launching a global campaign to build a post-single-use-plastics world.</p>
