my wild guess is that he corrupted the pikachu struct with too much data and overflowed into the timer writting 0xff all over the place
i wouldn't know exactly why though
in particular it seems to be the pikachu movement data which is about 20 addresses before the play timer
there are glitches that make pikachu move in random directions instead of following you and he probably triggered one of those
