Without waiting for Bramblestar’s response, Rootspring plunged ahead, racing up the slope to meet Ashfur as he hurtled down.
Once he was in striking distance, Rootspring leaped into the air, straight at Ashfur, aiming his foreclaws at the vile tom’s eyes. For a heartbeat, the speed of his attack seemed to stun Ashfur; in a panic, the  gray  tom  took  a  few  desperate  steps  backward.  Rootspring’s  claws swished harmlessly through the air.
