  1. >>> >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: The Volvo's forward collision wording and automatic emergency braking systems were disabled. Correct?
  2. >> Correct.
  3. >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: Why?
  4. >> Why? The -- in our presentation, ma'am, the -- there was a radar -- there was a conflict with the radar systems.
  5. >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: So, if it wasn't disabled that could have prevented the crash, correct?
  6. >> That's correct, ma'am. The -- Volvo ran some simulation tests for us during their part of the party system also. And they did 20 variations of the testing, the variations were that they -- they varied the speed of the pedestrian and her angle. And out of those 20, 17 out of 20, the crash was avoided.
  7. And the other three they were mitigated that the vehicle would be at less than ten miles an hour.
  8. We also had the United Kingdom did an independent study and actually did a closed course test where they tested the summer conditions, the same -- not the same vehicle but a Volvo XC90. They had a pedestrian dummy with a bicycle. And so they simulated the same crash scenario, and again, it avoided the striking the dummy. Or on several of the tests they significantly reduced the vehicle's speed prior to impact and mitigated the collision.
  9. >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: How did Uber address this after the crash?
  10. >> After the crash -- we don't know the internal. They worked with Volvo.
  11. >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: Uh-huh.
  12. >> And the system is now active during testing.
  13. >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: Okay. I mean, so it could have been done precrash, because it's now been done postcrash.
  14. >> Weapon -- when discussing with both ATG and Volvo, it was our understanding that engineers from the both team met to figure out the challenge, how to get both systems activated at the same time. That was the challenge initially that they confirmed both be activated at the same time without conflicting information.
  15. From the technical perspective exactly how they solved this problem to be able to -- I know that they changed frequency at which the amount TG radars operate, but beyond that I confirmed provide additional explanation on exactly what the technical challenges were.
  16. >> JENNIFER HOMENDY: Thank you.
