  591. Open Source Beer Revolution
  592.
  593. Yesterday, Red Hat introduced an 'open source' beer called Red Brew. The
  594. recipes for making the beer are available for free over the Net, and
  595. microbrewery kits are available at low cost from Red Hat. Says a Red Hat
  596. spokesman, "With the proliferation of free (open source) software, it was only
  597. a matter of time before open source beer became reality. After all, the only
  598. thing hackers like more than free software is free beer!"
  599.
  600. Following the Red Hat annoucement, other companies are racing to launch their
  601. own beer 'distribution'. Caldera is developing an OpenBrew beer. Meanwhile,
  602. Patrick Volkerding is working on a SlackBeer distribution, and DebianBrew is
  603. expected soon.
  604.
  605. Traditional breweries and beer distributors are not thrilled about open source
  606. beer. "This is ludicrous! People want beer that comes from time-tested, secret
  607. recipes -- not beer from recipes invented overnight! Open source is a fad," a
  608. spokesman for Buddwizzer Beer, Inc. said. In addition, other beverage
  609. distributors are nervous. "First open source beer, and soon open source soft
  610. drinks! Before we know it, we'll have RedCoke and SlackPepsi! This open source
  611. plague must be stopped before it eats into our bottom line! Don't quote me on
  612. that last sentence," the CEO of Croak-a-Cola said.

  754.
  755. Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great
  756. crystal river. Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs
  757. and rocks of the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and
  758. resisting the current what each had learned from birth. But one creature
  759. said at last, "I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall
  760. let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom."
  761. The other creatures laughed and said, "Fool! Let go, and that current
  762. you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed across the rocks, and you will
  763. die quicker than boredom!"
  764. But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at
  765. once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks. Yet, in time,
  766. as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the
  767. bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.
  768. And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, "See
  769. a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the Messiah, come
  770. to save us all!" And the one carried in the current said, "I am no more
  771. Messiah than you. The river delight to lift us free, if only we dare let go.
  772. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure.
  773. But they cried the more, "Saviour!" all the while clinging to the
  774. rocks, making legends of a Saviour.
