Kaden: [injured] My shoulder’s hurting and I can’t quite reach my tail. Can you just rub some of that oil through it?
Xander: Which vial?
Kaden: Um, it should be on the right. It smells like cherry blossoms and sage.
Xander: [frown, sweat] You want me to just… massage it in?
Kaden: [smile] Yep! It’ll suds up nicely!
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] Mm, that’s the stuff!
Kaden: Thanks, er- sorry, who are you?
Xander: Crown Prince Xander, of Nohr. Avatar’s older brother.
Kaden: [surprised] Oh, whoa! Sorry, I didn’t realise I was asking royalty to help me groom my tail!
Xander: [smile, sweat] Consider it repayment for protecting the people of Cyrkensia.
Xander: [frown] I was blinded by my hatred for Hoshido
Kaden: [frown, sweat] I mean, those invisible soldiers were INVISIBLE. Don’t beat yourself up too much.
Kaden: And they were the only ones attacking innocent people. You and the Hoshidans were both trying to protect civilians.
Xander: Even so… such loss of life could have been prevented if I’d listened to my brother/sister then and there.
Xander: [eyes closed, injured] My apologies. I shouldn’t be speaking like this.
Kaden: [smile] It’s okay! It’s normal to talk about this kind of thing while grooming each other!
Kaden: In kitsune tongue, we have a word for this. (Although human throats probably can’t say it.)
Kaden: It means the sacred time when you’re looking after one another. Because it requires so much trust, y’know?
Kaden: It means you talk about things you’d never normally talk about.
Xander: [smile] Fascinating.
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] It stops you from keeping too much bottled up inside.
Kaden: [neutral] Actually, there’s something I’d wanted to ask you. Your father’s King Garon, right?
Xander: [injured] Yes.
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] That’s groovy!
Xander: [surprised] It… what?
Kaden: I mean, I’ll be the first to admit that us kitsune don’t really keep up with human politics.
Kaden: But us and the wolfskin always have a soft spot for King Garon.
Xander: How come?
Kaden: Well, ages ago now, he was the one who outlawed kitsune and wolfskin poaching in Nohr.
Kaden: [sad] It still happens a lot, but it’s not legal any more, and that helps.
Xander: [smile, closed eyes] Of course. I’ve apprehended poachers myself – I should’ve known.
Xander: Father was a good king, before all this began. And a good man.
Xander: [injured] I should have realised earlier that he would never do all this in his right mind.
Kaden: Hey, don’t beat yourself up over it! He’s your father. That’s a huge blindspot.
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] But once all this is done, I bet he’ll be back to normal in no time.
Xander: [smile] I sincerely hope so.
Xander: There, I think the oil is rubbed through.
Kaden: Hmm, lemme see.. .
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] Ah! You’re a natural! If the crown prince thing doesn’t work out, you should consider a career in grooming.
Xander: Glad to hear it. And… thank you for the talk. I feel a weight lifted from my shoulders.
Kaden: That’s the power of grooming-talk!

Xander: How did you get that shoulder injury, anyway?
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] Getting sick of oiling my tail?
Kaden: [eyes open, frown] It was just as we were closing in on the Bottomless Canyon. I caught the haft of an axe while I was transformed.
Xander: [frown] My apologies. Leo and I had tried to divert Iago’s troops, but clearly we were too late.
Kaden: [smile, sweat] You don’t need to hold yourself responsible for EVERYTHING.
Xander: [injured] Things only deteriorated this badly because I looked the other way.
Kaden: You mean with King Garon?
Xander: Mm. I knew things were amiss, but I told myself Father knew best.
Kaden: It’s normal for kids to trust their fathers.
Xander: I’m not a child any more.
Kaden: (You’re kinda acting like one.)
Xander: Excuse me?
Kaden: Nothing!
Kaden: [serious] Honestly, sometimes I wish we kitsune were a bit more like you.
Xander: How so?
Kaden: We have chiefs and leaders and stuff – I mean, I’m meant to be the leader of our tribe, if you can believe it.
Xander: [surprised] But you’re… here.
Kaden: Exactly! It’s not a big deal if one of us goes off travelling for a while. Other people will step up to lead while I’m gone.
Xander: That sounds wise. For the burden of ruling to fall on one person’s shoulders…
Kaden: It helps a lot to share the load.
Kaden: [sad] But the drawback is that we don’t really have a chain of command. If something happened to your Father, you’d be King, right?
Xander: Yes. And were I to fall, Camilla would take my place, then Leo.
Kaden: Not Avatar?
Xander: [injured] She/he was never formally accepted into the line of succession. I expect her claim would be after Elise and Azura’s.
Kaden: See! You have this huge system for determining this stuff.
Kaden: But if I died here, I don’t know who’d take over. And they probably don’t know either.
Kaden: I never really meant to take leadership myself. It just happened. My father led before me, and when he was taken, I…
Xander: Taken?
Kaden: Yeah. He… He was killed for his fur.
Xander: Forgive me. I shouldn’t have pushed.
Kaden: It’s okay. It’s so common that- well, I’ve never met a kitsune who hadn’t lost a family member to poachers.
Xander: [injured] Barbaric. I can’t imagine your pain.
Xander: It does little to make up for it, but… I would be happy to try and work with you after the war to develop clearer succession customs.
Xander: Along with more vigilant elimination of poachers.
Kaden: That’d be groovy!
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] And if the Crown Prince thing doesn’t work out, you should totally come to the hamlet and be a professional groomer.
Kaden: I’ve never met a human so great at this!
Xander: Elise used to need help styling her hair while Camilla was away. I’ve had practice.
Kaden: You’re all so close. I’m kinda jealous.
Kaden: Although having to compete for attention against that many people sounds like a pain.
Kaden: [smile, closed eyes] I guess there’s benefits to being the oldest, huh?
Xander: [injured] … Yes, I suppose so.
Xander: Apologies, but I should be getting back to work.

Kaden: (Smiling) Are you finally maxed out on paperwork?
Xander: Not yet. I just need to finish-

Xander: She was kind and compassionate, but she never let that blind her to wrongs or injustices.
Kaden: [smiling] Sounds like you take after her a lot.
Xander: [smiling, blush] I can only hope.

Kaden: [closed eyes, smiling] Luckily, we’re stuck at the bottom of a canyon for the foreseeable future!
Kaden: [smiling] We don’t have to worry about the future right now.
Xander: [smiling, blushing] A fair point. It would be a shame not to take advantage of such an opportunity.
