  57. A British team is sent to cross occupied Greek territory and destroy the massive German gun emplacement that commands a key sea channel.
  58. 1943. With the battle of Stalingrad turning the war against them, the Germans are attempting to bully neutral Turkey into joining the Axis; to this end they have trapped 2,000 British soldiers on Kiros, an island in the Aegean, with only one sea route for evacuation, a sea route commanded by two gigantic German antiship batteries deployed in a massive cliffside bunker on the island of Navarone. Immune to air attack and too much for Allied battleships to suppress, the British muster Keith Mallory, a commando officer who has been working on occupied Crete for nearly two years and who is an expert mountaineer, to ferry a team of British commandos to the only area of Navarone that is not monitored by the Germans, a 400-foot cliff. Greek resistance is to meet the team inland and guide them around German patrols to the area of the German guns. However, the commanding officer of the British team suffers grave injury in the climb and Mallory must take control of the mission, despite clashes with explosives expert John Anthony Miller, who upon the arrival of the night of the raid finds his equipment has been sabotaged, thus exposing a traitor in the team's ranks.
  59. Being a big Gregory Peck fan, I was expecting great things from The Guns of Navarone, and in one of those rare instances, I was not disappointed. Mr. Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn et al. are in top form, each of them bringing their respective characters to life and the story likewise. The action scenes are impressive even by today's standards but in my opinion they are only a secondary pleasure. The main pleasure is watching the divergent and forceful personalities cooperate, conflict, confound and finally triumph. Suspense is maintained throughout. I also liked the way complex moral issues were addressed. Another bonus is the portrayal of the Germans. Here they are not all depicted as impersonal inhuman cruel monsters. The full mosaic of human personalities is shown on their side too. But don't get me wrong, they are still a formidable enemy who keep the outcome in doubt. Strongly recommended, 8/10.
  60. An excellent and exciting 2nd world war film with a quality cast led by the wonderful Gregory Peck as Mallory. I am guessing that Mallory, a world famous climber was named in honour of George Mallory of Everest fame. A small team of experts are sent to totally destroy two massive guns built into the cliff top of a small Greek island. Time is important as they have to save the lives of 2,000 men trapped on another island who are about to be attacked by an overwhelming force. The only route for 5 destroyers is past the guns. I am now going to have to criticise the premise of this classic film. Why would the Germans put these massive guns in the middle of the Aegean sea just in case? Why couldn't the ships just pick another route which did not go past the guns ? The 2,000 men were not all going to die. If overwhelmed, they always had the option of surrender.

Foreman was screening his movie, &quot;Guns of Navarone,&quot; for the critics. In one of the last scenes of the film, a German officer gives the command to a battery of cannon to fire at the approaching six destroyers in the Navarone channel.
