  1. Working At Fivetran
  2.
  3. Fivetran has been on an amazing growth path from its start at YCombinator. As a summer intern for the engineering team, I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of a team, culture, and mission that knows where it’s going. In this post, I want to share my experience as an employee of Fivetran.
  4. The team is expanding quickly, and the sales team is killing it with all the new customers and record-high revenue. The company still has its start-up quirks: procedures are still being made, the CEO is only a couple seats away from interns, and everyone knows everyone else by name.
  5. That being said, the people here are amazing. It’s very friendly, you learn a lot, and the people are fun to work alongside. In fact, I’ve noticed three things the company does well and hope it continues to do as it grows. Mainly, the company has a free atmosphere, is team-focused, and most importantly, knows how to have fun.

  7. Freedom to Learn
  8. As a start-up, Fivetran gives its workers a lot of freedom. Physically, this means no walls. Coming from a previous summer experience at a large company of 30,000, I’m now in an environment where I’m not separated by buildings and cubicles. It’s refreshing. I’m only a short chair stroll away from the head of HR and sales team.
  9. More importantly, Fivetran gives you the freedom to work on a variety of problems. I’ve noticed many of the developers are able to solve a variety of problems, from server side issues with AWS to building new ad connectors.
  10. If you are not an engineer, you are more than welcome to ping one and learn the technical side. The same holds true vice versa. I’ve always been able to talk to some of the sales people and learn what they do as well. The freedom to learn is something I’ve really enjoyed so far at Fivetran.

  12. Team-Oriented
  13. One of my favorite things in Fivetran is the biweekly global meeting. Here, every global office comes together in a big video call and goes over the sales, engineering, and managerial side of things. It’s awesome having everyone come together and seeing the work from each department cultivate into a growing product.
  14. As the product grows, naturally more problems arise. The biggest pro of the team-oriented nature of Fivetran is actually when we hit bumps. I love how the team handles problems: no fingers are pointed. Instead, everyone comes together and focuses on the problem rather than the person who caused it. It’s one of the small, yet huge signs of a team-centric group.

  16. Fun Place
  17. Fivetran’s engineering team has something called “superheros”, a weekly duo-team that tackles urgent development issues. Lunch conversations go anywhere from our current projects to methods on how to survive an elevator if it’s falling. Our VP of engineering will occasionally drop a pun that gets a chuckle from nearby people whom are lucky enough to hear it.
  18. Every company has its own fun, zany taste in fun and humor, and the people at Fivetran definitely make the work day fun and interesting.

  20. The past eight weeks has been a treat. Personally, I’ve grown a lot as a developer. I’ve met and made some cool friends I can visit when I return to the Bay Area. For Fivetran, who knows how big it can get. It’s exciting to be a part of a team that’s growing so much. The sky's the limit from here on out.
