It also would have made him an easy target for the bodyguard, and so at the last second, he pulled back, blasting some air from his vents to land on the stairs of the floor just above them. Next, he'd just have to outmaneuver him while he was surprised, drop some smoke, and...

Wait, why was there already smoke here?

The ex-hero and fat cat were already coughing and shaking their heads, trying to clear their eyes and backing up further from the Wolf's dark, smoke-silhouetted figure. But the smoke did not come from the Wolf, but from below them. The Wolf stood up, unaffected by the smoke as it passed through his makeshift grille, and managed to see the bizarre scene in its entirety.

The combination of the Wolf's sudden stop, smoke, and then Akunin playing the scared civilian for a few moments made short work of the bodyguard, beating him mentally with utter confusion before Akunin finished the job with his fists. But the ex-hero's own confusion was lesser to the Wolf's!
