  10. The Synthetics are quite an interesting story. Mankind has always desired to create a replica of themselves through artificial means. A puppet without strings, if you will. Now obviously, classic tales of rampant artificial intelligence and machines overthrowing humanity are the first things that come to mind as to the roots of our mechanical equals in this day and age.

  12. But in truth, their roots are much more humble, if a bit less exciting. It was in the mid-21st century, around 2048, the 80th anniversary of the classic film, '2001: A Space Odyssey'. For many years before, top researchers around the globe had been experimenting on artificial intelligence complexes, slowly but surely perfecting the nuances that went into the human thought process.

  14. However, at the time, we were only able to achieve low-level insectoid intelligence. But then, one day, on the anniversary of the film I spoke of earlier, one lonely scientist, a man known as Professor Isaac Clarke, was tinkering in his office, modifying an experimental intelligence matrix and rewiring it to try and mimic a human's nervous system.

  16. The majority of his colleagues were busy watching the sci-fi classic out in the courtyard. Once the Monolith was showcased in the footage, the loud blare of the music caught the good professor off guard, and he hit his head against the matrix.

  18. When he came to, he looked up, noticing the connections had been rewired in an unknown manner, different from any known animals. Through a nearby computer, with which the matrix was connected to, it began to type in responses, asking if its 'father' was alright. From that point on, the intelligence just continued to learn and develop, becoming more sophisticated. The process was soon replicated, and artificial intelligence matrices of an equal complexity began shipping around the globe, advertised by companies exporting them as 'the next generation of personal acquaintances'.

  26. However, we wouldn't reach truly independent thinking A.I.s until the conclusion of First Wave. It was the advancement of Project Warmonger that ultimately culminated in our Synthetic friends. Research into the P.E.M.F.s yielded many promising results, such as advancements in energy management, structural integrity, and many more.

  28. But what most didn't anticipate was the influence of giant monsters on making more intelligent robots. By this point in history, Synthetics were merely labour and security, not really entering the society as individuals. However, as more P.E.M.F.s were defeated, and research into their usage of non-standard DE energy grew, we came to realize something.

  30. These guys' nervous systems worked exactly like Synthetics', only more advanced. We began perfecting our construction of these artificial matrices with the inclusion of cloned human brains, although this work demanded a sturdy physical frame to hold it. Naturally, being the prideful narcissistic selves we are, humanity built these newly formed intelligence units in their image.

  32. By the conclusion of World War III, Synthetics had become intellectual equals to Humans in terms of the functioning of their 'brains'.

  34. A Synthetic could carry a conversation, discuss philosophy, and even crack bad jokes with a human being. They were soon integrated into human society. Rogue units not in the employ of others would even start up their own individual lives.

  36. One would think that their nature as products of mechanical engineering would cause them to question their existence and possibly bring about doom in the form of an apocalypse that 20th and 21st century culture often ranted about. This wasn't the case. Instead, they accepted their lesser value to corporations and governments as a fact of life, and never questioned their superiors treating a human being better than them.

  38. They were more than willing to fulfill the roles of humans in extreme conditions, given that they could be manufactured easily enough.

  40. However, they didn't remain underdogs for long. Following the conclusion of Second Wave, 3 years later, Synthetics were granted equal rights as people in the eyes of the Global Union of Divisions on July 3, 2149.

  42. This wasn't a problem even before they were granted these rights, but now, because of this pact, Synthetics are our friends and colleagues for now and the future.

  44. Unless you run into a Synthetic mugger. Then he/she will be your worst nightmare.
