  1. Note: I feel like the most obvious thing I need to work out is fleshing out some of these encounters, and maybe setting a scene more, giving window dressing so they don’t feel so barren. I usually do that later because I want to get the general encounters and dialogue finished first.

  3.
  4. Chapter 1
  5.
  6. “A lady shouldn’t squat,” a woman’s voice called out.
  7.
  8. Izzy rose up from her sitting position, “Huh?! What was that?!” she growled, making sure to get right in the woman’s face. Which was a bit difficult given how the woman was a full head taller than her. Still, she shot her best glare at the woman, feeling it would be enough to scare her off.
  9.
  10. It was at this point that Izzy realized the woman was actually an old lady. While she didn’t have too many wrinkles, the silver-grey hair was a dead give away. However, it didn’t matter who it came from, no one told her how to live her life.
  11.
  12. “A lady shouldn’t squat,” she repeated with the same conviction as before.
  13.
  14. Izzy was surprised the old hag actually repeated herself. Most people weren’t willing to challenge her further after that, those that did got a knuckle sandwich to keep their mouth shut. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t look too cool to beat up an old lady. Hell, she might even get called out for letting those words affect her so much, but they seriously pissed her off.
  15.
  16. It wasn't even the words really, but how they were packaged. With that adult “all-knowing”, “holier than thou” bs. She’d seen it too often.
  17.
  18. Solve disputes with your words, not your fists.
  19.
  20. Clean up your language.
  21.
  22. Don’t pee in the boy’s urinal just because you were dared to.
  23.
  24. However, Izzy realized that first bit of advice might be useful, since solving this altercation the old fashioned way might incur more ire than she wanted to deal with right now. Maybe adults were a bit more useful than they looked.
  25.
  26. “I ain’t no lady.” Izzy spat a loogie to the side to emphasize this point.
  27.
  28. If the old hag was offended about her squatting because she was a lady, she’d just let her know she wasn’t one. She liked squatting down, she liked doing squats, hell, she’d break out into squats if this old hag pressed her further.
  29.
  30. “I see,” she said, placing a card in Izzy’s open hand, “if you ever want to become one, contact me.”
  31.
  32. With that, the old hag headed off.
  33.
  34. Izzy was rather confused about the response. The woman spoke at her with more than twice the conviction that most adults could muster, and yet she rolled over quite easily. However, she didn’t feel like she won that fight, and that pissed her off.
  35.
  36. This was why settling things with your words was bullshit. It just made you angrier. Izzy gripped the card with her other hand to tear it in half.
  37.
  38. However, right as a tear began to form, Izzy stopped. She realized she didn’t even know who pissed her off so much. She turned the card over to see its details.

  40. Gertrude’s Training Program For Proper Young Ladies
  41.
  42. Aside from that, it listed some information, like her phone number and address.
  43.
  44. This was good. Maybe she’d go by and egg her house, a nice non-violent way to make her pay for making her angry. With that, Izzy decided to pocket the card and head off to school.

  48. Chapter 2
  49.
  50. Izzy didn't get too far before she came across a boy from her school leaning against a wall near the edge of the alleyway. She couldn’t remember his name, but she did recall he was the boyfriend of the girl she’d taken down a peg yesterday.
  51.
  52. “What do you want?” Izzy asked, leaning against the wall on the opposite side of the alleyway.
  53.
  54. “Nothing really. Just want to settle this fight between you and Kristie.”
  55.
  56. The name Kristie reminded her his name was Cooper, someone Kristie said would make her pay for what she did yesterday, but it seemed like she was full of it.
  57.
  58. “It was nothing personal Cooper, there wasn’t really even much of a fight, just a quick bop in the mouth for bad mouthing Patricia. Surely you’d do the same thing for a friend in that situation.”
  59.
  60. “I guess you’re right.”
  61.
  62. Izzy was a bit surprised. Two altercations ended through words in one day, it must have been a record.
  63.
  64. “So we cool here?”
  65.
  66. “We’re cool.”
  67.
  68. Izzy decided to take that as her cue to leave, only to catch a glimpse of a hand reaching out from the alleyway in one moment, and to find herself pinned against the wall in the next. She couldn’t see her assailant’s face, but she could see Cooper, walking slowly into her view.
  69.
  70. “You’ll have to excuse me, I was lying there,” he said, “you see, the issue with your reasoning is that I’d never be friends with a fatfuck like Patricia!”
  71.
  72. Cooper sucker punched her hard in the gut. Izzy could feel her insides jostle around from the force. She thought she might puke, and she kind of wanted to, just to get it all over her assailant’s hand.
  73.
  74. “I hope you’ll learn your lesson after this,” Cooper shouted in a hushed tone, “I don’t like to beat up girls, so you better not make do this again!”
  75.
  76. With that, he kicked Izzy hard in the knee with his cleats. Cooper had the most obvious wind-ups in existence, so she had enough time to keep her leg loose from the ground to minimize the damage.
  77.
  78. Still, the pain of the strike stung harder than any scrape or bruise she’d received in her previous fights.
  79.
  80. “I’d work you a over a bit more, but I don’t think I have enough time this morning to wash your blood from my fists, so you’ll have to excuse me. But still, I have to pay you back for that “bop” to my girlfriend’s face. I’ll be sure to give it back with interest.”
  81.
  82. Cooper wound up his fist, and that was the moment Izzy strook back.
  83.
  84. With a quick flick of her head to the left, she headbutted the cheek of her assailant, and avoided Cooper’s fist, which smashed hard into the wall behind them.
  85.
  86. Cooper let out a wail as he gripped his right hand close to his chest. Typical jock behavior, they could dish it out, but couldn’t take it in the slightest.
  87.
  88. The headbutt loosened her assailant’s grip on her mouth, and in that moment she chomped her teeth down on the palm of his hand.
  89.
  90. He pulled his hand back as fast as he could, but Izzy’s tight clench left some of his skin between her teeth. However, she didn’t stop there, and delivered a swift kick to his dick, causing him to crumple up and fall to the floor.
  91.
  92. Her assailant had been so stupid, it was hard to believe he had blindsided her. The quick pull back movement left her completely free, and left him wide open. He was basically asking to be kicked in the dick, and she was happy to fulfil his masochistic request.
  93.
  94. She delivered another kick to his side to make sure he was out cold before turning to face Cooper. Izzy could see the waterworks forming while he held his stinging hand. Absolutely pitiful. She’d have to give him something real to cry over if he was going to keep any cred at school.
  95.
  96. Izzy took a step towards Cooper, only for him to bolt off. Izzy gave chase… only to trip on her second step. She felt why it had happened before she saw it, but she still looked back to see it, her knee, swollen and bleeding. She wasn’t catching anyone on her bum leg.
  97.
  98. “Well, if he’s not going to pay his dues,” she said as she turned to face her other assailant, “I guess you’ll have to pay extra to cover him.”
  99.
  100. She began to fish around in his pocket, and found what she was looking for: His wallet. Opening it up to see the goodies inside, she saw the typical, a fake ID listing him as “Bob”, a debit card, some unused gift cards from family he probably kept in the vain hope he’d use some day, and an expired condom. Pretty much worthless, though in the folds she found her target, cold hard cash.
  101.
  102. She only saw five bills, with what looked to be a $5 sign on the corner. She took it out as she threw the rest of the wallet next to “Bob”.
  103.
  104. “$25 should be enough for a nice lunch,” she said as she raised the bills to her face, “Oh wow, I actually beat up someone for lunch mo-” her mind stopped.
  105.
  106. The bill had a 5 on it like she thought, but it wasn’t just that, there was also a 0 behind it. She put that bill behind the rest to see if the next one was a $50 as well, and then the next, and the next, and the next. Until she was sure of what she had: $250.
  107.
  108. More money than she had ever held, more money than she had ever seen in one place, hell, maybe even more money than she had over the course of her life.
  109.
  110. Izzy couldn’t help but ask why “Bob” carried this much cash on him. It seemed stupid, he should have put it in a bank or something.
  111.
  112. Maybe he didn’t have the time to do so?
  113.
  114. With that thought, the gears slowly turned in Izzy’s head. She realized this guy had likely been paid by Cooper this morning to help with his little scheme.
  115.
  116. With that revelation, Izzy let out a hearty laugh.
  117.
  118. It was like a $250 hit had been placed on her head. That was how much people feared her strength.
  119.
  120. Izzy pocketed the money, and head out from the alleyway back on the path to school.
  121.

  124. Chapter 3
  125.
  126. Izzy was never really a good student, but she was always fascinated with Biology. She loved hearing about the awesome ways predators attacked their prey, and how the human body does all the gross stuff it does. One of her favorite facts was about how the human body is strong enough to lift a boulder, it just holds itself back so you don’t injure yourself.
  127.
  128. It reminded her of super forms of characters from her shows, where they obtained amazing power by letting a physical toll be taken on their body.
  129.
  130. It was caused by adrenaline apparently, and Izzy realized her body must have been pumped full of it earlier, because right now she could barely even stand.
  131.
  132. Her stomach was on fire, and her left knee was under threat of buckling at any moment.
  133.
  134. Still, she couldn’t just head home. She’d be missing school because of Cooper if she did, and no one decided whether or not she’d go to school except herself.
  135.
  136. “I gotta keep moving!” Izzy said, slapping her cheeks.
  137.
  138. Left foot, right foot!
  139.
  140. “I can do this!” She shouted as she kept her eyes on the ground to keep her feet in line.
  141.
  142. Lef-
  143.
  144. “Ack!”
  145.
  146. Izzy was wanting to shout some obscenities at herself for tripping again, and not having enough willpower to move through the pain. Unfortunately, some battles couldn’t be won through sheer determination alone.
  147.
  148. She was fine with her face meeting the pavement again. They hadn’t seen each other in a long time, and it’d only leave her with a few scrapes and bruises. Still, it felt embarrassing to Izzy that this was how they’d meet.
  149.
  150. As she collapsed, to the ground, she couldn’t help but feel it was a lot softer than she remembered.
  151.
  152. Maybe I’m just that tough? Even pavement could be my bed now!
  153.
  154. “Excuse me, are you okay?”
  155.
  156. The question snapped Izzy out of her delirious stupor. Izzy looked up, being more in the face of the person who asked this question than the old hag from earlier.
  157.
  158. Though unlike her, this girl was rather cute. With deep blue eyes, long silk-like black hair, she looked like she could be an idol.
  159.
  160. However, the closeness of their face also made her realize something else, where she had landed.
  161.
  162. “Oh!” she panicked, “uh…” she stuttered, “I’m sorry!” she blurted out, “I’ll get out of your way!” she finally sputtered out as she scrambled up and turned away from her, only for her knee to buckle again, sending the back of her head into the girl’s lap.
  163.
  164. “Back so soon?” the girl asked with a slight chuckle.
  165.
  166. Izzy let out a laugh too. She hadn’t decided yet if she had been having the best or worst luck today. This day had been so strange, and it had drained her near boundless energy. However, that joke tipped it over to the former in her mind.
  167.
  168. “I’m Izzy,” she said, reaching her hand up.
  169.
  170. “Joy,” the girl replied, trying to shake her hand at the awkward angle they were in.
  171.
  172. That awkward angle did bring a question to her mind.
  173.
  174. How the hell am I sitting in her lap, yet my head is way above my feet?
  175.
  176. A quick glance to the left answered her question. The girl was sitting in a wheelchair.
  177.
  178. “Your leg! It’s covered in blood,” Joy exclaimed.
  179.
  180. With a bit of reluctance, Izzy raised her head from Joy’s lap to see the damage, and was honestly a bit disappointed.
  181.
  182. “It’s not that much, the blood’s just dripped down my leg for a while. I’ll be fine!” She smiled to further prove her point.
  183.
  184. “Nonsense,” Joy said as she lowered her head onto Izzy’s shoulder and brought forth a handkerchief to wipe away the blood. Izzy’s felt a small pang in her chest at this.
  185.
  186. “I’ve bled more than this as a kid, I’ll be fine!” she repeated with a forced smile.
  187.
  188. “You need to to treat wounds as soon as you get them, or else you might get infections.”
  189.
  190. “Like something as small as bacteria could take down someone as tough as me.”
  191.
  192. Izzy flexed her arm to show her muscles off. She probably had more than most of the boys at her school.
  193.
  194. “Well then, given your strength and stature, you should know not to underestimate small things,” Joy laughed.
  195.
  196. Izzy felt another pang in her chest. She should've been angry about the short comment. Hell, she’d wager half her fights with other kids were related in someway them making fun of her height. But for some reason, she didn’t feel pissed off like she regularly would.
  197.
  198. Maybe the bacteria really is getting to me.
  199.
  200. “I cleaned up most of the blood. Make sure to get some treatment at school, you could still get an infection.”
  201.
  202. Izzy struggled to give a small, “sure,” as she got up to leave. Only to fall down for a third time, though not of her own volition.
  203.
  204. “Hey, what are you doing?! I need to get to school like you said.” Izzy tried to wriggle from Joy’s grasp.
  205.
  206. “You do, but not on that bruised knee. You need some ice for it.”
  207.
  208. “What are going to do, a magic trick to pull some ice out from your handkerchief?”
  209.
  210. Joy gave a small laugh, and Izzy couldn’t help but feel a bit gleeful from it.
  211.
  212. “No, I’ll take you to the nurse's office myself.”
  213.
  214. Without even a chance to respond, Izzy found herself in a quasi-princess carry. Joy’s arms were in the right place, beneath her knees and back, but Izzy’s butt rested between Joy’s legs on the seat of the wheelchair, so it’s not like she was being lifted off of the ground.
  215.
  216. Still, she couldn’t help but marvel at Joy’s speed and dexterity.
  217.
  218. “I need you to wrap your arms around me,” Joy said.
  219.
  220. Izzy wasn’t one to take help from others, especially when they were making her do things to get that help, but she felt compelled to do as Joy asked of her.
  221.
  222. “Like this?” Izzy asked.
  223.
  224. “That’s perfect, now get your head as close to mine as possible. You can use my shoulder as a headrest if you want.”
  225.
  226. Izzy’s face felt hotter and redder than the spiciest pepper she had consumed in her life, and she had eaten a lot of spicy peppers.
  227.
  228. “Uh, why’s that?” she asked coyly.
  229.
  230. “I want you to minimize your body’s contact area. If you’re hanging off to the left and right, it’s more likely for us to bump into someone, and hurt them and ourselves.”
  231.
  232. “Why don’t I just move my legs then?”
  233.
  234. “I also need one arm free if I’m going to use the joystick. Normally I like to push myself to class, but that’s probably not going to be possible with the both of us, so we have to compromise.”
  235.
  236. “I guess I’ll be like a princess in a carriage,” she said jokingly, “please, I beg of you great knight, make sure I’m not late to the ball.”
  237.
  238. Joy gave a polite laugh, one that likely would have pissed Izzy off it was someone else. However, she wasn’t sure why, but she could tell it was a genuine laugh, not one done out of obligation.
  239.
  240. “I’ll be sure to do my best for this Cinderella,” she said with a final laugh.
  241.
  242. Izzy couldn’t help but look down with a blush. She hadn’t been called anything remotely feminine since grade school. But that was because she made sure they didn’t. However, with Joy, it felt right.
  243.
  244. “Th-that’s great,” she stuttered out.
  245.
  246. Joy giving no notice to this pressed the stick forward, and began navigating the chair through the crowded sidewalk. Taking extra care not to bump into anyone.
  247.
  248. The new vantage point Izzy had taken was a bit disorientating.
