  1. The way I assign my fort is in 3 (4ish steps) steps:
  2.
  3. Step 1a: Assign Combat Dwarf's (only in larger forts, useful in small forts if you want to build skills early)
  4. Pick the best for military.
  5. Step 1b: Assign Weapons
  6.
  7. Step 2: Assigning my non nobles
  8.
  9. Step 3: setup remainder of labor force (including nobles if a small fort)
  10.
  11. Step 4: Haulers (Custom Professions)
  12. Assign hauling to all dwarf's that have labors (excluding Nobles), if a large fort, I will only assign labor's to dwarf's who have less than half the # of labor's I want assigned to dwarf's (i.e. this case 8 is what is specified in the optimization plan).
  13.
  14. 0:00-2:30 explanation:
  15.
  16. I start with a combat (to show how injured/healed dwarf's are moved to/from combat roles), throwing down a bunch of baddies 9 z levels so they end up bruised.
  17.
  18. You start with seeing my drop area (I had caged prisoners).
  19.
  20. I will then show you my current military dwarf's
  21.
  22. Then I will select all, and repick my best for militia duty.
  23.
  24. Was going to show hospitalized dwarf's but no one got injured this combat, instead what is seen is some dwarfs are now eligible for combat assignment since they came out of the hospital.
  25.
  26. -------------------------------
  27.
  28. Step 1a: Assign Combat Dwarf's
  29.
  30. 2:30 - 3:00: gonna show you my squads.
  31.
  32. 3:00 - 3:25: show you my combat optimization plan
  33.
  34. 3:25 - 4:25: show you my (custom/optional) militia roles (used for the combat optimization plan)
  35.
  36. 4:30 - 4:35: show combat optimization plan
  37.
  38. 4:35-4:50: select all dwarf's for this, it's important that you select the best of all your dwarf's, these dwarf's will be excluded from future steps.
  39.
  40. group by Squad,
  41.
  42. assign via my combat optimization plan
  43.
  44. 4:50 - 5:28: Show who was removed/added, how I switch them
  45.
  46. Okay, we are now getting somewhere, see squad "M Buckled dances?" The weaving labor is used as a place marker for my weapons dwarf's, the weaving labor is unassigned on a dwarf that is currently in a squad, this means I need to move/remove him from this squad. According to my labor optimizer, I need to move him to become a marksdwarf (due to he being a better fit now for ranged dwarf's becuase someone else is better for his prior melee position, sometimes happens due to training/healing). So I'm just going to move him to a R (stands for Ranged) squad. M designates Melee.
  47.
  48. Step 1b: Assign Weapons
  49.
  50. 5:28 - 5:48: weapons screen (View weapon assignments)
  51.
  52. 5:48 - 5:51: What I'm looking for is anyone with a indiv/choice melee (in this case, no one does [this is because if you assign a weapon and move back and forth between squads, the game is smart enough to remember the last weapon you gave him. So there is no issue when moving between a ranged or melee squad), but I'll show you what to do if there is someone with individual choice
  53.
  54. 5:51: I remove mace, artificially set him to individual choice/melee.
  55.
  56. 5:52 - 6:07: filter by militia, sort by squad (so I can get a good view of the military tab)
  57.
  58. 6:07: I see he's a good fit for mace! So I should set him to mace (I don't see myself doing that here, must have cut it by accident from the video)
  59.
  60. 6:14 - 6:40: Script's I use a lot!
  61.
  62. 6:45 - 7:00: show optimization plan
  63.
  64. 7:01 - 7:30: Apply filter script, show optimization plan's updated numbers.
  65. Note: I also unassign my doc (from time to time, it helps to have an exclusive dwarf to one thing)! In my case, I had my healthcare lagging when
  66. I shared healthcare labors with other labors, so I found a dwarf that did good in 4/5 of the healthcare labors, and made him my unofficial doc.
  67.
  68. -------------------------------
  69.
  70. Step 2: Assigning my non noble/militia labors
  71.
  72. 7:30: Picking Nobles:
  73.
  74. apply non militia filter script
  75.
  76. Note: nobles have already been setup a while ago, that's why you don't see me assigning them now (The orange highlight means that dwarf is a noble, and he's already the best fit for the job (nobles tend to do that overtime).
  77. -------------------------------
  78.
  79. Step 3: setup rest of labor force
  80.
  81. I'm going to show the optimization plan now. It's a bit of a mess, but it basically has all my important labors spelled out. Due to the size of my fortress, I went with 65% of total jobs, 8 jobs per dwarf (~99 Dwarfs * 8 Jobs = 792 Labors, 65% of that is ~515, so out of 99 dwarf's, only 515 jobs will be assigned, preserving a max of 8 jobs per dwarf. This free's up some dwarf's to do other jobs like hauling. Jobs are assigned based on a role % fit for that job. *** Ratio values determine how many dwarf's will be assigned to that labor. ***)
  82.
  83. For young forts, I do 12 jobs per dwarf, and 100% of labors. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I exclude hospitalized. So I'm really going to get (99 - hospitalized) * 8 *.65 labors to assign.
  84.
  85. 8:00-8:10: set to Non Military filter
  86. Apply optimization plan
  87.
  88. -------------------------------
  89.
  90. Step 4: Haulers/Custom professions
  91.
  92. Custom Professions:
  93.
  94. Default Hauler (i.e. self explanatory)
  95.
  96. Helpful (doesn't necessarily haul, but recover's wounded/feed's patients, and hauls refuse (important for miasma), this custom profession I assign to everyone! Including nobles/militia.
  97.
  98. 8:10-8:16: (you didn't see it, but I just applied the helpful custom profession to my non militia dwarf's.)
  99.
  100. 8:13-8:14: Militia dwarf's were already helpful (I never unassigned their labors).
  101.
  102. 8:20 - 8:56: sorting by total assigned labors, to assign haulers to those with less than 50% of 8 labors (8 as detailed in optimization plan), accounting for the 3 added from helpful custom profession
  103.
  104. 8:57 - 9:03: witeness the drop in idlers!
  105.
  106. VOILA THAT WAS IT, watch my idle count drop!
