- 21st Century: Human technology evolved rapidly. The internet changed the way people communicate, and soon the roads of earth were filled with millions of self-driving cars. Automation allowed production of more resources than ever before, and many countries established a basic wage. Corporations around the globe built colonies in throughout the solar system, to gather precious resources that were just beginning to become overused on earth. This century was a golden age of prosperity, but even the humans themselves knew this age would not last.
- 22nd Century: Humanities advancement came at a great cost, which was very apparent during this century. Petrol, which was the primary energy source for the race, was almost dry, causing energy shortages worldwide. The atmosphere had become unbreathable without a mask, due to extreme amounts of pollution. 85% of the world’s wildlife became extinct. Old rivalries between human nations worsened, and the world soon found itself in a global war. The fighting of the war spilled out into space, and many stations were destroyed or severely damaged. On Earth, the oceans and the air became irradiated, starting the post nuclear war horror. Most of those who survived the blasts died within the next decade from radiation poisoning as ominous clouds swept over the planet. Other survivors did what they could to get off the planet as soon as possible, flooding the space stations throughout the solar system with refugees, and causing issues with overpopulation and resource shortage.
- Even in the last decades of this century, the world was still in turmoil. After the bombs fell, there became a power vacuum as the old governments collapsed. Many dictatorships appeared around the globe, as warlords vied for power. Many democratic nations of the world then agreed to unify against these threats, and to restore peace in the world. Together, they reformed the United Nations, and built a global army that swept over the countryside, restoring order. General Casswell, an important figure of this military movement, came up with the idea to establish a global democratic republic. He claimed that this government would help humanity to fulfill its destiny, and would end all war because it would unite humanity together finally. After his suggestion was announced, many people came to support his claim. In the year 2134, various political figure heads from around the world and the colonies throughout the solar system met in Athens to discuss the creation of this government. To many people’s surprise, the vote passed, and an election for the first president of earth was announced to start in the next year. Some people were angry, and claimed the vote was rigged in favor of big corporations who wanted to cut up the world for themselves. They argued also that the UN now was made up mostly of countries from richer parts of the world, and that developing regions didn’t have established government that was recognized so they didn’t have as much of a say. The UN armed forces then quickly moved in to ensure the establishment of the world government, by squashing all attempts at resistance. Ironically, instead of peace, the world government caused more war for the next few decades, as many violent resistance groups in poorer parts of the world attempted to gain independence. Sadly for these rebels, the UNA eventually crushed their dreams by 2212, the last violently active resistance group surrendered. The UNA claimed they won the wars because it was humanity’s “destiny” to be united as one, but in reality, it was mostly due to the fact that the UNA had access to advanced military equipment, while the resistance groups were using more basic technology.
- Not long after the formation of the global government, electricity returned to many regions of the world that had lost it after the bombs fell. Also, many other things improved, like the internet, which was restored. Scientists started working on a global air purification project, and began building geoengineering facilities worldwide. The government of the UN established itself in Charlotte, USA, because it was one of the largest remaining urban centers.
- 23rd Century: It was this time, that humanity was finally free from the burdens of war, and had more resources to devote to improving society itself. Worldwide, things began to get better for everyone, as the new government proved its promises to be mostly true. Capitalism reigned in all regions of the world, and a global minimum wage was soon established. The bureaucracy of the new system was clunky, and people of different values often clashed, but in the end, the system still worked. Smaller provincial governments allowed different regions more autonomy from the rest of the world, while the federal government in charge insured that everyone remained working together. Without the limits of borders, corporations exploded in size and competed with one another for the global stage. Globalization also came a lot faster, as different cultures were exposed to each other more than before.
- To replace oil, which had basically run by at this point, the world changed to be more compatible with alternate sources of energy. Space travel became much faster than before and costed much less energy, so it became more feasible to gather hydrogen from gas giants to use as energy. Several space elevators were built, and colonies throughout the solar system exploded to provide earth with more resources. Because of the dark years in previous centuries, the colonies throughout the solar system had learned to be self-sufficient and more productive than ever before. New technologies emerged on earth, which included things from the realm of science fiction: self-driving hovercraft, shield generators, and holograms. The military of the UN became supper effective, and employed new technologies like ground drones and power armor to great advantage. Tanks became an obsolete military technology, as flying craft became more powerful and maneuverable. While the world remained peaceful, the UNA had to flex its arm occasionally to prevent local squabbles from becoming war. The new government also did work to clean up irradiated regions of the world so they could be lived in again. In 2213, air pollution had been removed to the point it was possible to breathe freely again.
- Medicine was revolutionized in this new age, mostly in the field of gene therapy. Using manufactured viruses, it became possible for humans to cure almost every ailment, from cancer to Alzheimer’s. Designer babies became a reality, and many couples opted into having their child genetically altered before its birth to improve its future life. While this was very controversial, and banned in several regions of the world by local governments, this service resulted in world health increasing exponentially. However, at the start of the next century, fifty years after the advent of this type of genetic engineering, the world was almost in crises again.
- 24th Century: The fact that these new genetically enhanced humans were smarter and stronger than normal humans were obvious. This caused mixed reactions for people. Supporters of the genetic enhancements argued that this was the future of humanity, and that it was very positive. However, critics, which mostly included the religious, claimed that it was wrong to mess with life in this way. Many parents were aggravated that their children, who were unaltered, had to compete in an environment that they felt was unfair for them. In school sports, this resulted in there being separate leagues for the enhanced and the unenhanced. Starting in the 2270s, as the first generation of genetically altered humans reached adulthood, there grew to be a social movement amongst the enhanced, claiming that the unaltered humans were a curse to society. The most militant of these people believed that law should require enhancement. While small at first, this group grew until the 2330s, when it exploded in popularity. Over half of the global congress, at this point, wanted to make the enhancements law. However, the silent minority of people who were against the enhancements rose, and caused a massive amount of protests worldwide. To counter these protesters, politicians asked those who supported the genetic enhancements to protest back at them, causing almost half a year of disruption to the economy. Many police forces acted violently towards the anti-enhanced protesters, and the UN government did what it could to cover up these truths. When it became time to vote, the bill passed, and the UN prepared its army to enforce the new rules. Several of the more conservative regions of the world rose, and for the first time since the UNA had restored world peace, there was a terrible war. The UNA used all its resources, but in the end, humanity was ununified again. The nations who gained independence from the UN declared themselves to be the Coalition of Pure States. After the war, these states then quickly banned the practice of genetic enhancements, much to the UN’s anger.
- Some of the most controversial of politicians then began to push for the extermination of the unenhanced. This policy wasn’t enacted at first, but over the years, it gained more supporters from within the UN. By 2260, the UN was 80% enhanced, while the Coalition nations were 20%. In 2267, much to the Coalition’s horror, the UN president enacted an executive order to hunt down all the unenhanced within their borders, and to keep them in camps where they could not be a threat to society. Hostilities between the UN and the coalition rose, and the unenhanced did everything they could do to escape UN territory. The UN began to require bloodtests outside of every school and workplace, making it especially hard for the unenhanced to go unnoticed. Supporters within the Coalition began to aggressively save as many of the unenhanced that they could, sometimes risking themselves getting caught in the process. By 2072, the world was on the brink of another global war, and nuclear weapon exchanges were very much a possibility.
