Chapter 220 - Meeting with the Pope, and...

"I will store your luggage."

　中枢に入る前に、身体検査を受けた。
Before entering, we were searched.
　武器になりそうなものをすべて没収される形だ。
I guess they were looking for weapons to confiscate.
　愛用しているナイフから、スクロールまで、すべて預けさせられた。
From my favorite knife, to my scrolls, I had to leave everything behind.

　もっとも、鎧そのものが武器だとは思わないらしく、脱衣は求められなかった。
However, my armor itself wasn't considered a weapon, so I didn't have to undress.
　クリフも知っているだろうに言わないのは、俺を信頼してくれているからだろう。
Cliff didn't say anything, probably because he trusts me.
　俺は誠意として、吸魔石を搭載した左ガントレットと、ショットガンを搭載した右ガントレットを預けておくことにした。
In good faith, I also deposited my left gauntlet with the mana absorbing stone and my right gauntlet equipped with the shotgun.

　中枢内部は、迷路のような作りになっていた。

The barrier must be at least saint or king ranked.
　騎士の実力は聖級か王級か。
I wonder if these knights can match saint or king ranked skills.
　いまいちわからないが、もし戦闘になったら肉弾戦のみで戦う事になるだろう。

「猊下、お連れしました」
"Your eminence, greetings."

　クリフの祖父ハリー・グリモルは、透明な結界の向こう側にいた。

He looked like the good-natured old man I imagined from the letter.
　白く長い髭に、金糸の入った司教服。
He had a long white beard, and wore bishop-like robes with gold embroidery.

「はい、お疲れ様でした」
"Yes, thank you."

　サウロスのような力強さや、レイダのような鋭さは無い。
His voice was powerful like Sauros, but not sharp like Reida.<!--I have no idea if this is the deceased Water God Reida or someone else.-->
　強者に感じられるようなオーラは感じ取れない。
He had the aura of an exceptional person.

　だが、その代わりに包み込むような器の大きさを感じた。
But, he seemed to be conscientious of his own power.
　なるほど、これが教皇か、と納得できるような、何かを感じた。
I see, so this is the Pope, I understand, something...
　オーラを感じない代わりに、大らかさを感じ取ったってわけだ。

「紹介します。彼はルーデウス・グレイラット。
"Allow me to introduce Rudeus Greyrat.
　ラノア魔法大学で一緒に勉強した仲で、僕の後輩です。

　僕を凌ぐ魔術の才能を持っていて、極めて有能な人物です。
His talent for magic surpasses my own, he is an extremely skilled person.

　クリフの紹介に、教皇は和やかな顔のまま、ゆっくりと頷いた。
As Cliff made my introductions, the Pope slowly nodded with a gentle expression.
　それ以上の事は、俺の口から説明しろという事だろう。
I should probably handle any further explanations.
　あくまで友人として紹介したから、その後は俺次第だと。
Cliff introduced me as a friend, the rest is up to me.
　昨夜のうちに話した通りというわけだ。
We discussed this last night.

「なるほど、それで……。

　ルーデウス殿は、私に何を要求しにきたのですか？
Rudeus-dono, for what reason have you come to me?
　傭兵団の立ち上げの許可ですか？
Permissions for your mercenary company?
　それともスペルド族の人形の販売の許可？
Or, is it for permission to sell Supard race dolls?
　あるいは、龍神オルステッドの軍門への勧告に？」
Or perhaps for counsel on behalf of Dragon God Orsted?"

　それと、一番大事な部分ですが、水王級魔術師ロキシー・ミグルディアの弟子というのも付け加えてください」
And the most important part, that I am the disciple of water king ranked Roxy Migurdia."
「ほう、正直な方だ」
"Hou, this is an honest one."

　教皇はふむふむと頷きながら、手元の紙に何やら書き込んでいた。
The Pope nodded with a [Fumufumu], and jotted something down on the paper in his hand.
　何を書いているのかはわからないが、最低でもロキシーの弟子とだけは書き加えて置いて欲しい。
I don't know what you're writing, at the very least add that I'm Roxy's disciple.

「となると、スペルド族の人形を販売している理由は、そのスペルド族への恩返しのためですか？
"So when it comes to your reason for selling the Supard race dolls, it's to repay that assistance?
　識字率の上昇による国家の転覆を企んでいるわけではなく？」

I guess that's the same theory as a cooper putting holes in barrels to repair them later for a profit.<Ref>Literal comparison. The Pope was suggesting Rudy would increase the literacy rate -> cause a rebellion -> fix the rebellion to sell Orsted's name/his own agenda.</Ref>

「それでは、オルステッド様への協力の呼びかけは、いかなる理由によるもので？」
"Then, appealing for cooperation with Orsted-sama, is there a reason?"
「今から約８０年後、魔神ラプラスが復活するため、それに対する備えです」
"Around 80 years from now, the Demon God Laplace will be revived, it is to ready the world for that time."

　そう答えても、教皇は顔色一つ変えなかった。
Even with that, the Pope did not change his expression in the slightest.
　ただ得心がいったように頷いた。
He just nodded in consent.

「なるほど。それで、クリフを利用して、私に協力を要請しにきたと、そういうわけですか。『龍神』を己の陣営につけたければ、言うことを聞け……と」
"I see. So, by using Cliff as a connection, you have come to request my cooperation. In other words you want me to join the Dragon God's camp, is that it..."
「いいえ、違います」
"No, it's different."

　なんか、このおじいちゃん、すでに交渉モードに入ってそうな感じだ。
Somehow, talking with this Ojiichan, I already feel like I'm in negotiation mode.

「はい。なので、本日は一人のルーデウス、龍神の配下として、対応して欲しい」
"Yes. So, today, Rudeus is here as a subordinate of the Dragon God."

　正直に言った。
He said it honestly.
　向こうはこちらの事を調べている。
The other side seems to be studying us.
　抜けている情報も多そうだが、概ね正解だった。

　ラトレイア家への件については、ひとまず置いとく。

　あっさりとそう言った。
He said that readily.
　見返りを求めないのか、と一瞬だけ疑問に思ったが、すぐに打ち消す。
I expected some kind of quid-pro-quo, but I guess not.
　『クリフとのつながりに免じて』という部分が見返りに相当するのだろう。
This is probably out of consideration for my connection with Cliff.
　どのみちクリフが大きくなれば、俺は教皇派であるクリフに大きな利益をもたらす。
At any rate if Cliff plays his part, it will bring great benefits to the Pope's faction.

「ですが、スペルド族の人形の許可は難しいでしょう」

「私は魔族迎合派のトップとして、教皇という立場にいます。
"I am in the pro-demon race faction, and the pope.
　ですが、最近は魔族排斥を唱う枢機卿派が勢力を伸ばしています。

　いや、そもそも、俺がミリス教団に協力するなら、結局はクリフの手柄になってしまう。

　出た瞬間、俺は大きなため息をついた。

And the anti-demon race faction led by the Shrine Maiden.

　神殿騎士は、魔族排斥派だ。

The Latreia house as well.
　こいつらがみんながみんなテレーズのような好人物ならいいが、
Even good-natured people like Therese,
　普通はあの取り巻き連中のように、狂信者だらけのはず。
I would have expected them all to be fanatics.

　どっちに付くかと聞かれれば、言うまでもなく迎合派、教皇派だ。
If I'm asked who I support, needless to say it's the pro-faction, the Pope's faction.

　とはいえ、テレーズは前回と今回、合わせて二度も助けてくれた。

　なので、ひとまずは今回も邪魔は無いと思って行動する。

　次にやるべきことは決まった。

It would be good to leave selecting the building up to Aisha.
　冒険者区か商業区か、誰を相手にした商売をするか。

　俺は町中を移動する馬車を使い、神聖区のクリフ邸まで戻ってきた。
I left through town on the carriage and returned to Cliff's house in the religious district.
　時刻は夕暮れ。

　このへんは新鮮な卵が食べられるのがいいな。

　えっと、パンもあるから、トンカツとかも出来るな。

　卵がひとつあるだけで、料理の幅は広がり、俺の楽しみも増える。

　帰った瞬間、アイシャの怒鳴り声が聞こえてきた。
The second I returned, I heard Aisha's shout.
　慌てて家の中に入る。
I hurried inside the house.
　そこには、ウェンディに詰め寄る我が妹の姿があった。

So, I felt a sense of confidence since Zenith was with Gisu.

　何か事件に巻き込まれれば、ゼニスを守り切るだけの力はない。
If he were caught up in some kind of incident, he might not have the power to protect Zenith,

Gisu should have a high ability to avoid being caught up in those types of incidents though.

Zenith stepping on some belligerent old man's foot or something, that kind of scenario is possible too.
　出会い頭に、ちょっと目を合わせただけでぶん殴ってくる女もいるのだから。

　ついでに言えば、魔族だ。
She's also with a demon race.
　もし、ラトレイア家が、ギースとゼニスが二人でいるのを見たらどう思うか。

To kidnap Zenith they would have to go through Gisu, an S-class adventurer, it wouldn't be easy.
　俺だったら、もっと別の無防備なのを狙う。
If it were me, I would look for a more defenseless target.

　俺は数歩踏み出して、ふと足を止めた。

　アイシャの体がこわばり、俺のローブを引っ張るようにつかんだ。

　最後に何か聞こえたが、すでに俺は夜の空に向かって跳躍していた。
