- A very small gift for my good pal, Xlth. Every day with them is always a blast and they deserve the best! North Pole is our ship, and shipname-wise it's the best Christmas pair around.
- Spawned from a line of dialogue Xlth themselves offered to me: "I wasn't supposed to fall in love with you."

- Chapter 27. Supposed To
- The room was aglow in a candlelit haze, sending a soft yellow light all around the room, painting the walls and floorboards of the humble two-room apartment.
- Dozens of tiny scintillas of lights on festive strings combined to forge a stronger glow, one that illuminated every inch of space, be it solid object or intangible shadow.
- It was a basic living area, one society surely never intended for them to have.
- They were supposed to have mansions, acres of land, crystal fountains, decorative stone statues, every material item of luxury accessible to man.
- And they'd refused - to prove to themselves and to their families that none of those things were what they wanted, what they needed.
- They didn't need the public to see them – not like this.
- The rest of the world only needed to see the champion and the heiress. Nothing more.
- They didn't need to see the two girls that danced together in their apartment on a Friday evening, as though life were some kind of fairytale, something to be enjoyed.
- They both adorned dresses, one in red and one in white.
- The crimson flowed around her ankles, just above ruby-colored shoes, with heels that clicked over the wooden floor, twirling with steps. That crimson continued upward, over her perfect stomach, her sculpted chest, to reveal her slightly-tanned shoulders, her muscular arms, her skillful hands.
- Hair to match that dress swayed in time with her hips, back and forth, side to side, a red river all in accordance with her steps.
- It all led up to a smile that shone brighter than any light in this darkness.
- The white dress fell just below her knees, with strapped, open-toed shoes tapping earnestly beneath. The alabaster hue traveled up along her slim waist, to her shoulders, revealing the pure white skin over her collar, which rose and fell in time with her controlled breathing.
- Her ivory arms reached out until gloves of a similar color covered her elbows, her slender wrists, and all the way down to the tips of her perfectly-manicured nails. Snowy hair cascaded down her back, all the way to her hips, challenging the length of her vestments.
- Her smile matched that of the first girl's - also white, and also cheerful - enough to give the room its last bit of much-needed shine.
- Outside, the evening was dark with twilight, the wind harsh, and the air cold with the harshest season's chill.
- But inside it was all the opposite.
- Amongst the decorative lights, two girls danced, arm-in-arm, hand-in-hand.
- When their eyes weren't closed in joyous laughter, they were open, forest-green emerald and sky-blue azure.
- Colorful, deep, vivacious.
- Their smiles were reflected like mirrors on one another, matching and of equal elation.
- Just as they were perfectly matched for one another.
- Weiss felt Pyrrha's hand in hers, guiding her around the spacious room, where they'd deliberately cleared all the furniture away an hour ago.
- Pyrrha led her, the sounds of their laughter mixing merrily in with the background music on one of the little antique radios they'd let play.
- Weiss closed her eyes with ease, and Pyrrha led her with even less effort, spinning her once, then twice, then three times. Weiss followed, feeling her fingers slide down into the creases of Pyrrha's palm. And though the gloves provided a thin barrier between them, she could still feel the warmth of her girlfriend's skin.
- She reached out, not even having to reopen her eyes in order for her free hand to find Pyrrha's shoulder. The taller girl slipped easily into position, bringing her hand to Weiss' hip to support her in another spin.
- Pyrrha watched with gleeful eyes as Weiss laughed again, her beautiful voice now rising up in tune with the music. As she twirled, her pristine hair lifted up around her petite form like a ribbon wrapped around the perfect gift.
- Weiss finished the spin, her shoes gliding gracefully over the floorboards in circles as the fabrics of her dress tickled her thighs.
- At last, she reopened her eyes, to find them locked with dazzling green once more. Even as their bodies twirled again, she managed to strain up onto her tiptoes and kiss Pyrrha's lips sweetly, humming.
- Pyrrha gratefully accepted, moving both hands down the small of the girl's back to loop around her and pull her close. She kissed back, laughed against her lips, then stepped away once more.
- She took Weiss' hand, their fingers curling together until they'd interlocked, the tapping of their shoes continuing to fill the room alongside the music.
- They stepped apart, then back together.
- Chest to chest. Lips to lips.
- They'd always been exceptional in battle, in finances, in academics.
- But their graceful, alluring chemistry was best demonstrated here.
- In dance.
- In joy.
- In love.
- But despite what the rest of the world seemed to think, they were only human.
- It was times like this they almost wished they weren't, so that they could keep dancing together without pause until the dawn broke.
- But there were slight aches in their ankles, thin veils of sweat on their brows, faint strains in their chests. Their eyes met again, and they came to a silent agreement.
- Just one more song.
- So they danced.
- Spun.
- Twirled.
- Laughed.
- Kissed.
- Until the final note of the lively song ended.
- Pyrrha extended her arm, giving Weiss one last twirl.
- Weiss followed, shifting her weight, throwing out her free arm and leaning back.
- Pyrrha kept her there for a few seconds before stepping in, tugging that slender wrist forward again. Weiss came towards her once more, and Pyrrha readied herself.
- She caught Weiss in her arms – tightly – and kissed her with fervor. Her girlfriend was pressed close to her now, enough so that Pyrrha could feel the ecstatic beat of Weiss' heart, thrumming with even greater speed than her own.
- Pyrrha pulled back, let her breathe, then kissed her again. Weiss' arms looped around her shoulders and pulled her down, ever closer, ever deeper into her lips.
- After that, they swayed together for a few minutes.
- Weiss hugged Pyrrha's shoulders, resting her cheek against her collar. Pyrrha held gently to the small of her back, laying her chin lightly atop Weiss' head, breathing in her scent, occasionally nuzzling into the white softness of her tresses.
- They started to wind down, waiting for their muscles to relax, for their pulses to slow. The clicking of their shoes was now matched with a quiet song and softer breaths.
- For several minutes they swayed, until they'd both recovered from their spirited dance.
- At that point, Pyrrha took a small step back, just enough so that she may meet Weiss' starlit gaze. Their cheeks ached from smiling so much, but they just couldn't stop.
- The joy was in Pyrrha's voice as well as she kissed Weiss' temple and asked.
- "Was that enough for you?"
- Weiss hummed against the crook of her neck and hugged her tighter.
- "I think that will suffice. For now."
- Pyrrha chuckled.
- "Well, in that case..."
- In one fluid motion, Pyrrha lifted her up and spun her one last time. Weiss laughed and kissed her girlfriend's hair just before she was let back down onto the floor.
- Pyrrha then guided her over to the couch that had been pushed back against the wall so they could dance. Weiss perched herself on the arm of the couch as Pyrrha sat on the cushion.
- Pyrrha kept her arms encircled around the heiress' waist, and in turn Weiss embraced her shoulders. She pulled Pyrrha close, and the renown young champion willingly rested her head against Weiss' chest, sighing in bliss as she closed her eyes. Weiss' heart beat steadily there, and Pyrrha pressed close to listen.
- With both hands, Weiss petted through that silken red hair, threading it with ginger affection, letting it slip through her fingers before taking it back up again. She traced the curve of her shoulders, cradling her close.
- Weiss, too, sighed in her contentment, the breath fanning out just above Pyrrha's head.
- A few more minutes passed as the distant radio continued to play, providing a soothing soundtrack for their moments of intimacy. Of course, Pyrrha very much preferred the lovely sound of Weiss' pulse, but when the heiress broke the silence with her voice, she listened well.
- "You know..." Weiss murmured, stroking through Pyrrha's hair once more. "I... wasn't supposed to fall in love with you."
- It was a strange thing to say, but Pyrrha replied as best she could.
- "Why do you say that?" She tightened her grip on Weiss' waist with a subtle possessiveness, an unwillingness to let go.
- The heiress' tone remained low, reserved.
- "I mean... I wasn't supposed to end up in a cheap apartment, dancing until midnight with the most beautiful girl on the planet."
- "Right," Pyrrha put in. "You were supposed to end up behind a desk back in Atlas, answering phones and ridding the world of the chance of ever seeing your smile."
- Weiss nodded.
- "There's that. But most importantly, I was supposed to marry a boy. To bear my father the grandchildren my sister still adamantly and rightfully refuses to bear to this day. That was supposed to be my job."
- "So then, essentially..." Pyrrha said slowly. "You weren't supposed to be happy. Or so you thought."
- "So I was told," she corrected. "That's what was implied to me all my life, from the moment I was born. But it's a shame. It seems I just can't get anything right."
- She held a small kiss to Pyrrha's temple. The other girl snuggled ever closer.
- "Well, as they say... if loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right."
- She tilted her chin upward, nudging Weiss with her nose. The heiress dipped her face and kissed her again, bracing her palm against Pyrrha's cheek. The crimson-haired girl reached up to slip her fingers through Weiss' hair and pull her downward carefully.
- Weiss was right.
- She wasn't supposed to be doing this. She wasn't supposed to love Pyrrha.
- But just as all the other kisses did, this one demonstrated just how much she didn't care.
- And Pyrrha didn't intend to let her change her mind.
- She planned to have Weiss all her life – so long as Weiss would have her.
- And Weiss knew she'd always have her.
- At last, they parted, only for Weiss to pepper butterfly kisses all over Pyrrha's cheeks. And it was only seconds before Pyrrha started to laugh, giggling as she pulled Weiss down into her lap and kissed her again and again.
- They kissed until their lips were sore, until their eyelids finally lifted, joining the shining white teeth in shattering the darkness of the night.
- Those smiles, those eyes.
- It was all the light they'd ever need.
