To replace Pulse with ALSA:
Turn off all the Pulse daemons in the startup menu.
Install alsa-oss.
Install xfce4-volumed (and remove the conflicting package xfce4-volumed-pulse).
Have xfce4-volumed run at startup.
That's it!
