diplomacy! What you know is that Marlok is a greedy jerk of a fish, and he's a task master of a Pirate Captain - but he gets shit done. Even if someone has a complaint they usually keep it to themselves because they still get paid and Marlok is not usually one to fail you  - but Heavens help you if you fail him.

he's a penny pincher, but follows his agreements to the letter. He's a demanding jerk, but so long as you do your job, he won't kill you if you tell him it can't actually be done.
If you insult him, you better be ready to deliver, or he may throw you off the ship personally. Pirates have a reputation to keep, after all.

So, naturally everyone would love a leader that's less of a pain, but you got to admire the tenacity it takes to make a crew work as a pirate and still get respect.
(incidentally wages still suck but that's a given in any time period and never take a loan from him unless you got a very clever trick up your sleeve).
