Cesare Pavese famously said, "traveling is a brutality." And I'd agree, as foreign sights can both viciously appeal to, yet offend a stranger's eye. Backpacking, I believe, exemplifies this, usually due to money restraints. You're a little too hungry; you're a little too lost. It's not 'champagne travel'; there are no turned down pillows. No tipping. It's a bed of cement cinder-blocks with a sheet of cardboard on top; it's a hole in the floor for you to shit in. And that makes things exciting.

Even though it can make things scary.
This is why traveling is a brutality. Because your suffering reminds you that you're alive. And that's the point, you wouldn't have it any other way. This is the backpacker's pride, even though it shouldn't be. But the question must be asked: for how much longer will your heart still beat? And if you were to die, would anyone ever find your body? After all, your bones aren't rotting at the foot of the Empire State Building. No. The flies feast on you in a place where even Google Earth fears to tread.

'A Place for Sinners' is my attempt to capture the bare-bones spirit of this.
As a backpacker, I spent a lot of time in South East Asia, and although I 'suffered' the exhilaration of exploration, I often wondered what damage I was doing along the way. Does the tourist trade change a country? What about its people? Thailand is the perfect setting for such questions. And the book does offer a blood-splattered answer.
Traveling is a brutality. But it can be even more brutal for the country the traveler is in. Every step: one thing's demise. And this can only go on for so long before the land revolts and fights back. This is at the heart of 'A Place for Sinners'.
