- Singular “they” has always been used in English to refer to words like “someone”, “anyone”, and other indeterminate people. More recently, some people also use it for specific individuals of unknown gender or people who do not identify as male or female.
- “Anyone who has enough money to buy their own home can adopt.”
- Other options:
- Default “he”: Anyone who has enough money to buy his own home can adopt. (sexist)
- “he/she”: Anyone who has enough money to buy his or her own home can adopt. (awkward)
- pluralize: People who have enough money to buy their own homes can adopt. (no problem, but it might be hard to figure out how to reword every example)
