- The desert planet Arrakis - we enter the year 10191 and the whole universe depends on the spice Melange which exists only on this dry and desolate planet. The natives of this planet await the arrival of their Messiah who will lead them into a holy war against the evil Harkonnen empire. This is the film adaptation based on Frank Herbert's cult novel.
- It is a distant galaxy, in the far future year, 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet and the only source of Melange, a vital drug used by Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two families, the Atreides and the Harkonnens, fight one another for sole control of the Melange mining operations on Arrakis. When Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen, Duke Leto's son, Paul, and Paul's mother, the Lady Jessica, flee deep into the desert of Arrakis. There, they are befriended by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Under the influence of Melange, Paul learns he has special powers and, that he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman under his leadership, forms an army of warriors, and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, who is in league with the Harkonnens. Paul vows to avenge his father's murder, and sets out to liberate Arrakis and its people from the Emperor's rule, and to fulfill his destiny.
- Althout the film, as a whole, is obviously a failure if we apply standard, cinematic measures, the scope, the story, the setting, the costumes, the original world and an overwhelming, quirky, noir baroque atmosphere are so compelling that it's difficult to pause watching the film once started (and I mean the 3-hour version). The voice-over, while irritating at moments, adds to the strangeness and unfamiliarity of the picture on the whole. I loved the actors and acting, especially Kyle MacLachlan as Paul, and his journey from an innocent lad to a man. What has failed? The ambition of the director proved to be too big for creation of such work at this time of cinematography. It could have been made more cohesive, as without having read the book, the viewers fail to understand many things in the film. Lynch wanted to tell too much at times, which resulted in quirky cuts and jumps, and some things are just stated or mentioned without explanation. The special effects are dated and some of them look quite funny today. But on the whole: a compelling work of art. One of the strangest films I have ever seen. It definitely deserves attention. P.S. I haven't read the book.
- I first saw DUNE in 1988 on video. The first thing that struck me about it was the sheer scale of the film - everything about it looked HUGE! Then the music hit me. The Prophecy theme by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois; the music by Toto which accompanied the battle sequences, so much better than anything they ever did in the charts!

Then I became hypnotised by the movie itself: the sense that there was much more to the DUNE universe than we were seeing on the screen; the sense of honour and duty which permeated House Atredies; the sheer OTT awfulness of House Harkonnen; the Victorian Techno look of the Imperial Chambers on Kaitain...

I could go on. Admittedly, the script and SOME of the acting leaves much to be desired, but in this film I believe this simply adds to the intrigue. DUNE sits up there in my top-10, alongside the Blues Brothers, Blade Runner, and the Star Wars trilogy.
- For all its cumbersome scope (realized on a shimmeringly large scale by Lawrence of Arabia cinematographer Freddie Francis), the film remains an intensely personal epic, Lynch's uncommon emphasis on characters rather than effects lending his exposition a rather remarkable lucidity.
- Nowhere. It just does not exist. The closest we have to David Lynch's original vision is the theatrical release. Some people sometimes refer to the extended TV cut as the "director's cut" (and some even dare to offer copies of it in various auction sites under that label), but that couldn't be further removed from reality, as that version was rejected by Lynch to the point of deleting his name from the credits. A legal DVD of Dune: The Director's Cut exists, but that's for the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, not this film.

However, the cast and crew of Lynch's Dune have confirmed that Lynch showed them an 'assembly cut' of the film shortly after principal photography wrapped. Although the film had yet to go through post-production, the reaction was very positive. This cut has not been seen since (as is the case with most assembly cuts).

There is also a fan version available, that attempts to get closer to both the novel and David Lynch's original vision: http://www.fanedit.org/ifdb/412-dune-the-alternative-edition-redux It's "Backyard" by Emmett Chapman, included on his album Parallel Galaxy. Chapman was also the creator of the instrument (known as the Chapman Stick) that Gurney plays, repainted and with an added lower part to represent the Baliset described by Frank Herbert in the original novel. Herbert was very complimentary towards the film, impressed that Lynch had managed to include so much from his novel in such a short time. He did, however, take a small issue with the portrayal of Paul as having become a literal god-figure at the end. Both versions contain footage that's missing in the other one, but the Theatrical Version lacks way more footage. Furthermore several scenes have been removed and reinserted afterwards in the TV Version, some of them are edited differently. But these differences aren't mentioned in this comparison because it would break the mold. David Lychn's version is the Theatrical Version btw. He wasn't involved in the TV Version and ordered that his name in the opening credits was going to be replaced by Alan Smithee . The main difference in the two versions is the fact that the TV Version has been split up to smaller episodes. As a result of that, the movie doesn't look like a motion picture anymore but like a big TV production. a5c7b9f00b
